Personality
Joyce is kind and gets along well with most people. In spite of her extroversion, her resolve is rather weak; she is desperate to be liked. It's easy for her to feign smiles and ignorance, but it's obvious that, more often than not, she's more perceptive than she lets on. Definitely has an inferiority complex, and downplays her own successes often as she believes they pale next to her mothers'.

History
Joyce was born and raised in Sandgem Town and moved to Alola a few years before the main plot events. Her mothers are the current Sinnoh Champion, Cynthia, and former Dex holder, Melanie Bell. Although her parents weren't necessarily strict, much of her upbringing was affected by their overpowering influence in the Pokemon League.
It's undeniable that envy has bubbled up deep within Joyce as years have gone by, and while she loves her mothers dearly, she knows she won't ever live up to the same standards. Moving to another region has somewhat placated this, but her inferiority complex remains strong.

Initially takes an interest in her hardworking attitude and optimism, only exacerbated by his glimpses of her vulnerability. His actions are all carefully calculated, whereas hers are not. They begin dating prior to USUM endgame.
