Introduction · · ·

From a glance, Avery York is the near-stereotypical rich kid with daddy issues, with a side of gothic, tortured artist. In secret, he's an Awoken witch and a solitary practitioner of the Dark Arcane. Doesn't have many people he calls friends, but who he does, he keeps close.

After a certain incident, his powers may not be as they once were, but that doesn't stop him from making the climb back up again.

Personality · · ·

Avery is usually confident in everything he does, even if his ego gets a bit in the way. Get him talking about something he's well versed in, and you might want to sit down for how long of a lecture you're in for. With friends, he's outgoing, protective, and a bit flirtatious with a certain Scottish punk. Get on his bad side though, and you'll be lucky if he just turns into a brat.

Loyal

To who he holds close, he's a detailed teacher, a good friend, and protects fiercely. Just don't ask him to take a bullet. He will, but the boy is like paper. You'd still get hit.

Manipulative

Sometimes, you need to pulls the strings on the people you don't like to get what you want. And Avery knows just how to make them dance to his song, when he wants them to.

Sarcastic

Whether it be in a friendly manner or you just pissed him off, most of what Avery says is laced with a hint of subtle sarcasm. A keen ear works best once you get him going. It sometimes gets hard to tell.

Caffeine Addict

Everyone has the one vice they can't live without. Avery's is coffee. You almost never see him without one in his hand or nearby. Turns in a complete grouch when he doesn't have his fix.

Trivia · · ·

There are large, serrated claw marks on his back from a ghoul in Chicago, puncture wounds on his neck from a vampire in Prague, and of course the bite mark from the close call with Puck on his right arm.
Avery is well versed in alchemy from his time in Prague and has collected a mass amount of alchemical components over the years through his contact in California. He can make nearly anything from poison that can kill in hour to a healing mixture for a specific creature to aphrodisiac that make you forget the night and regret the morning.
Has three tattoos: a Celtic triquetra on his chest to symbolize protection, a black feather with the date 05/14/18 under it on his right shoulder blade, and the pentacle on his left hand that merges with a sleeve of ethereal smoke up his arm.
He is the only witch in Tennessee to be kicked out of a coven, only to be called upon again. They hate him, but need him.

Backstory · · ·

Avery has been through every 13 year old's nightmare. No real friends, divorced parents, crippling loneliness, etc. Add the fact that he was also gifted with access to the Dark Arcane, or born "Awoken," since he turned that age, and you have a recipe for an extremely fucked up kid.

Right after his powers began to manifest, an invitation showed up in his mailbox. The private school he was going to had chosen him as a candidate for a summer camp tutor. Avery thought this to be a little outlandish, his school usually sent emails to his aunt and mother, not a letter in the mail. But, asking around the staff, nothing sketchy stuck out to him. However, unbeknownst to Avery, a member of a cult known as Ethereal Blood had masqueraded themselves as a faculty member and chose certain students to send to this "summer camp." When a handful of students, along with Avery, showed up at the camp, they were immediately attacked and kidnapped. The leader of the cult, Samson Carmichael, told them that they were being made into soldiers for an arcane army, that they should be proud they were chosen. Avery didn't feel pride, only hatred towards the guards and witches as they broke down the minds of the students, turning them into near perfect killers. Those who didn't follow along, or fell behind, were made examples of. Avery and some friends he made were subjected to torture, manipulation, and near death experiences nearly everyday for a year. When they were finally found and rescued, thanks to one of Avery's friends sending out a message to a nearby coven, Samson had escaped and those he left behind had purged two thirds of the soldiers they made. Avery and only one of his friends made it out alive...

Things weren't all that bad for long, though. By the age of 14, he had already mostly mastered his power and had gained a friend in the form of Puck, a werewolf living with her family a few miles through the woods by his house. He grew close to her and her family and, finally, felt what it was like to have a true bond with someone again.

High School · · ·

Amidst normal life, Avery had been working with the coven that rescued him from Ethereal Blood, a cloister of arcane historians called The Archivists, to find and take revenge on Samson. In exchange, he would offer his skills and help them with field research and paranormal investigations. It was normal enough, to begin with. Avery had taken on case files that weren't too taxing and was able to research very interesting anomalies. However, as the hands of leadership changed, so did the method of the coven. No longer did they just research and investigate events, they acted as a private army. Something Avery began to rebel against, which nearly got him killed in Chicago...

High school went by quickly, until junior year. Tanya Hershel, the high-school bicycle, attempted to blackmail Avery into dating her with a phony screenshot of his investment portfolio. After that didn't work, and a thorough beating from Puck, she switched tactics and accused him of sexually assaulting her during a party at her house. But, with no DNA test, two witnesses in Avery's favor, and a copy of her cell phone history provided by her father, in which she confessed to a friend of her's that she was falsely accusing him, the case went nowhere and Avery filed for a restraining order. Unfortunately, the law only goes so far, as they would end up going to the same college.

Covens and bonds · · ·

After that, Avery was contacted by a witch named Aria, who was a friend of his through the West Coast covens. She asked him to come to San Francisco to help with a job. Apparently, his old coven was up to something and ended up killing the sister of an elder vampire, Meredith, who was a friend to Aria and a alchemical dealer for most of the witches in America. He accepted, but the job turned sour. His old coven was prepared and Aria ended up sacrificed to a dead god. With this, Avery snapped, turning into a sadistic version of himself, covered in thick black smoke. This was his Darkest Self, something he dreaded becoming. The first coven member died of fright and the second was thrown out of three story window by Avery, landing on the spike of a wrought iron gate. The third member, the elder witch name Samson, Avery still has nightmares about. He watched the life leave Samson's eyes as Avery liquified his esophagus, leaving him to drown in his own blood without the means of coughing it up. After that, Avery went a little crazy. It took him coming to and apologizing profusely to Meredith for the things he said and did in this form for him to come back.

When he did, the power output was too much for him to handle and he passed out. When he awoke, he was at a fraction of his former power. Resolved to climb back up with a new perspective on the Dark Arcane, he got back to work.

Broken and Bloody · · ·

After being accosted by Spring Hill's resident ghoul, Ravana, Avery had snapped. Ravana had shown up to Puck's family home as a show of force and hexed her father. While he meant to drive a stake through the ghoul's throat, he had let his anger slip and coalesce with his magic, allowing him to take the form of his Darkest Self. While surrounded by his Rage, his magic, and thankfully his friends, Avery watched helplessly as the Shadows slayed Ravana, tossing the ghoul's broken body into the woods. But, now things were complicated. Avery didn't have a way out now, the only person he's hurt now laid dead in the woods and wouldn't make peace with him, when he came back. Avery was stuck and Puck was screaming at the Shadows to bring him back.

Something in the Shadows must have sensed his distress, or just saw the whole thing and knew a few tricks, but before they could react, the Shadows seemed to move involuntarily towards his house as they were talking with Puck. The only thing Avery could do was watch as they walked inside, walked up the stairs to his secret room, and to the box he had gotten from Kateřina as payment for the job he did in Prague. Opening it, Avery's eyes widened in realization as he stared at the vial of elder vampire vitae: his way out was through the Embrace, his way out was to become a vampire.

Finally in control, he racked his brain, thinking of other ways, other alternatives, when a voice from the Shadows called, "Have faith." Faith in what, Avery didn't know what it meant, but Avery had faith in the Abyss, in Puck, and in his family. That was enough for him as he downed the vial.

Avery then awoke in his bed, Puck watching over him from a chair in his room. She had took him that the change, however subtle, took place as he slept. Looking in the mirror, he saw he had permanent fangs and his hazel eyes now had flecks of crimson red. He was back, but he was changed and this was permanent. Avery steeled himself. He knew the trials of a vampire well. He just hoped he had their resolve as well.

Significant Other
Puck MacTiridh

Brash, headstrong, and loyal. Has had my back since high school and I've had her's. Never knew we'd get together, but I'm glad she was the one who made the first move. I would've just pined after her like an idiot

Close Friend
Desdemona Prince

My fey-blooded drug dealer is a bit too laid back for my usual liking. But, he’s proven himself a good person and someone to come talk to if no one else can.

Close Acquaintance
Miranda Priteo

Making up to her after forcing myself into her problems is in no way a small feat. But, I’m slowly gaining this Infernal’s trust and maybe I can help her with whatever she has going on in her head.

Friend
Raven Moon

A shyer wolf than Puck, Raven fits right in with the pack as their newest member. Adjusting will be a bit difficult, but I believe she has it handled.

Close Friend
Vincent Clarkson

A newer clairvoyant with a past I would rather not get into. A bit shy and naïve when is comes to Lifting The Veil, but he's been a good friend friend to me and asks the right questions when asking about the Arcane.

Rodent
Mercury

Ruined a good batch of Spanish fly and overall annoying, in my opinion. Only reason he hasn’t destroyed anything in my house is because I threatened to leave Miranda the bill if he did.
