Haruka grew up in a rather middle class family. She had a quiet childhood and her family did not have much money, but was happy. When her widowed grandfather died, however, he left the family with large mountains of debt. With the income they made, it was not nearly possible to pay off the large sums. Haruka herself began to work early, selling fish and wild animals, which she gradually learned to shoot herself, but even the little money she earned was not enough. The Sato family became more and more poorly known and lost most of their belongings. When Haruka's father fell ill, her mother began to drink and fell into alcoholism. She lost control of her emotions and started hitting her husband, but cried every time she did it. However, she never laid a hand on Haruka. In Haruka's mind, the thoughts of doing everything to save her family were consolidated.
Prostitution was a common profession in her hometown. At some point there was a rumor that a man with a strange tattoo all over his upper body often visited the brothels of the small town by the forest. It didn't take long for the military to show up. To Haruka, all this seemed rather suspicious. She used her observation skills to find out what the hell was going on. While sneaking around outside one night, she noticed two soldiers behind one of the houses. She hid and listened to the conversation.
"I really can't believe it, Sergeant Tsukishima! It's unbelievable that someone was really crazy enough to tattoo a map to the hidden Ainu gold on human skin!"
"Shut up, or someone will hear you."
"And now here is supposed to be one of the inmates with a tattoo! I'm so excited! This could really be our first skin! My first major mission and already directly something so important.... And I'm still new here... Oh it's all so exciting."
"Shut up already, damn it!"
Haruka couldn't believe what she was hearing. Gold, lots and lots of gold! With that, she could surely pay off her family's debts and also start her own life far away from here. She had made the decision - she would infiltrate the 7th Division and get the damn gold.
The night after the overheard conversation there was an uproar in the village. The young soldier whose conversation Haruka overheard was beaten to death by a drunken suitor. Haruka took the chance and stole the uniform. She hurried home and hid it. After the whole mess was over, she washed and shortened the uniform to fit her height. She was relatively short at 160cm, but the sergeant she had seen didn't seem much taller.
The man they were looking for was not found and the 7th Division headed back to their base. When Haruka heard the departure, she packed what she could to follow the troops. Before leaving the house, she grabbed a knife and cut her long hair. To give her face some more seriousness, she cut her cheeks deeply. The cuts eventually turned into scars, which still adorn her face.
Arriving at the 7th Division base, she tied off her chest and mingled with the newcomers. Since many people did not know each other, Haruka had no problem mingling with the troops. She was not the strongest, but because she had learned to handle the rifle, was very nimble and persistent, she did not stand out and had no disadvantages. Her good observation skills helped her to quickly grasp and understand what it was all about, what the goal was and what she had to do and invent in order not to attract attention. She settled well into her new role as a man and, due to good performance, became more and more known and popular and even made it into Lieutenant Tsurumi's inner circle.
Shortly after Haruka successfully sneaked into the 7th Division, there was a "meeting" called by Second Lieutenant Koito, at which he also made great speeches. Koito raved about himself and made fun of the size and femininity of his colleague Daitan Fujimaru. He talked and talked and finally he also examined the "new" ones. Since Haruka was probably the smallest person in the whole division and couldn't shine with any special achievements at that time, she was Koito's new laughing stock. As Koito stepped away, Haruka and Daitan turned to each other in sync and shook hands. This was to be the birth of the best friendship of all time.
Koito, of course, remained Koito, which annoyed the hell out of Haruka and Daitan. They formed their "Anti-Koito" club called "The Koitos". The two would exchange stories about everything Otonoshin Koito did and said, get upset about it, and laugh at his mistakes. At one point, the two created their own photo album in which they scribbled on photos of him and made comments. Outsiders always took "The Koitos" as a fan club, of course this was completely misunderstood.
