02 — Personality

Calypso is a rather forlorn yume. Very rarely does anybody aside from a few close friends see her smile. There are some yumes who wonder if Calypso can even feel happiness. In reality, she can feel happiness, and those who do actually know her know that she can. Calypso simply doesn't understand how to express it.

Calypso finds most her happiness and comfort in the sea, and singing by the sea. More often than not Calypso tries to avoid singing in front of others, but those lucky enough to hear her singing are awed by her voice. Calypso finds it hard to believe others would enjoy her singing, but it makes her feel very warm inside regardless.

03 — Background

In The Cove

Calypso is a melancholy Yumenari, and that much is obvious to everybody around her. Many others assume that's all she is, but in truth Calypso has more depth than that. Calypso finds joy in finding little trinkets to share with friends, sea shells especially. These are the times where Calypso can be seen actually sharing a small smile.

Calypso doesn't know why there's so much heavy sadness in her heart, but she does pursue the things that ease it up. Gifting of sea shells and trinkets eases it, but it's easier to ease this sadness when she sings to the sea. It wouldn't be hard to convince other Yumenari to think that Calypso came from the depths of the sea.

Nightmares

Calypso doesn't exactly use her melancholy by itself in the nightmares she makes. Rather, Calypso crafts nightmares around the sea. Humans will have nightmares of being lured into the sea, only to become stuck out there. Eventually the sea takes the human into the depths, unable to escape.

Extra

To everybody's surprise, Calypso actually enjoys any time she has to spend at the nursery. She's very good at being a gentle figure for the children of the cove, but especially the youngest of them. Calypso will often sing lullabies for the young ones who need help falling to sleep, making this a rare exception to her trying to avoid singing in front of others.

04 — Trivia

  • Calypso naturally has sympathy towards sirens in tales about them.

  • Calypso sleeps the best when it's storming.

  • While Calypso can pick up on and follow "societal rules", she doesn't understand them at all.

  • Calypso has several jars full of sea glass in her home.

05 — Relationships

01.
Eve
Best Friend

Calypso is still surprised to this day that Eve wanted to be her friend. She had a hard time believing it when they approached her and struck up conversation about the sea with her. Through a shared love of the sea, Calypso and Eve bonded though.

Now, Eve is Calypso's closest friend. Calypso always picks out seashells for it first before herself or anybody else. Calypso feels happier when she gets to be around Eve.

02.
Umiko
Close Friend

Calypso and Umiko of course became friends due thanks to the ocean, and thanks to Umiko's shark cloud pet Sameki. Sameki came out of nowhere when Calypso was singing one day, and Umiko followed quickly. For some reason, Umiko's prescence put Calypso at ease, and things simply evolved from there.

Umiko will show Calypso the dreams she likes to make, and conjure up images of beautiful and bright sea floors just to make her happy. Calypso has nearly cried before at such kindness. Umiko is one of the few Yumenari that Calypso trusts wholeheartedly.
