"when things are good, i meld into the crowd. when things are bad, all the eyes are on me. i never did anything wrong, did i?"
haru is a free spirit, but tied down by reality and familial obligations. growing up as an iwada (not to mention one with particularly influential parents), he’s always been outcasted by his peers. he puts on an apathetic face towards the judgement he endures, but he would be lying if he said it didn’t get under his skin a bit. all he can settle with to try and distance himself from them is his little subtle acts of rebellion, such as getting piercings or dying his hair. still, he feels an obligation to pursue business endeavors until he can figure something else out. haru fears that if he didn’t have money, he would have nothing. is he even wrong? he doesn’t exactly have many ‘friends’…
because he’s never really had many friends, his general socialization is a mix of weirdly formal and painfully awkward. he doesn’t know what life is like for an average person, so he’ll casually mention absurd things— such as some seriously concerning familial matters, or speaking of money as if it grows on trees. despite this, he likes to observe people and predict how they’ll react to certain variables. he’s hyper-analytical when it comes to others, which weirdly makes him pretty good at settling arguments and changing the tides of a conversation.
haru is a business major, and despite seemingly giving off this ‘smart’ or ‘dignified’ energy, he’s really a goofball. he hates boring things like school, and usually ends up paying off someone to do his homework most of the time. he knows the material so he doesn’t have much interest in writing it all down for no reason. most of his actual knowledge about business is from firsthand information he’s picked up from his parents, which is probably worth more than any class could manage to teach him… still, he stays in school because he has fun people-watching! haru also loves to do various dangerous things for the thrill, although he has an insanely low pain tolerance. he’s passed out from every single piercing he’s gotten, or even just from pricking his thumb before. :’).
being a very talented musician has carried haru pretty far. he loves everything to do with music— performing, watching, even just learning everything he can about it. he’s been a music prodigy ever since he was a child, and is classically trained in piano as well as a variety of other instruments. music is pretty much the only thing that haru is grateful that his family encouraged. haru does also really jive with nature, and he works at the flower shop in his spare time when he’s not helping out at IWFO.
Notes
- haru’s favorite food is wakame, usually with soy sauce.
- haru plays keyboard in his band, ‘stupid april’. his keyboard is a KORG RK-100S.
- haru can play any instrument that he picks up! despite this incredible ability, he’s not as gifted as finn when it comes to singing.
- he drives a 1993 mazda rx-7. it was a gift for his 16th birthday, and his dream car at the time. rich people.
- haru is bi, somewhere on the aroace spectrum— he’s not really sure himself. mostly attracted to women, though.
- haru can speak both english and japanese, but is fluent in only english.
- haru is a taurus. his birthday is april 29th.
- haru’s favorite music genre is japanese indie rock, and this often reflects in his music style. he adds the same sort of flair to stupid april’s songs. some of his favorite bands are polkadot stringray, keytalk, and vaundy.
- aside from felix, haru is the main lyricist. he’s a bit of a poet, although he doesn’t show any of that off much.
- haru is extremely well-intentioned, but his people-watching habit can make him come off a tad creepy. even with all he does to separate himself from his family, there’s just something off-putting ingrained into him.

Early Life
the iwadas are a generational family business that, either knowingly or unknowingly, has employed several morally corrupt values into their work practices. iwfo (short for ‘iwada foods’) is one of the single most influential fast food chains across the globe, but still has the iwadas themselves deeply rooted in their business culture. the look for ‘iwada’ features was always obvious, although the bias is a lot more subconscious among the public. to be able to be chosen as a higher up for iwfo, you had to be able to look, act, and be the part that they wanted to showcase to the public. if you didn’t fit into the image, you had no stake in the business. haru personally falls somewhere in the middle.
haru’s parents have a huge stake in the business, as development managers. they work in iwfo expansion, bringing the brand and raising chains overseas and all around the world, if they can. haru moved around a lot as a very young child, but at the age of ten he settled in a more permanent residence in deer view. he was left with babysitters while his parents travelled to scout out new locations without him.
the importance of staying in deer view was clear enough, as a state-of-the-art college sprouted up in his new hometown. it was funded by none other than iwfo themselves, and it was evident that when haru got older that he would be attending said college as well. as a child, being an iwada was really cool— everyone who grew up eating it, and was impressed by haru’s supposed affluence, was extremely impressed. still, even though he had a lot of people who admired him, it was impossible to make friends with anyone. nobody could really relate to his parents having such a huge involvement in an internationally renowned company.
on the outside, haru remained optimistic. he understood the role that he served being born into the family, and because of the values his parents taught him at the time, he genuinely thought that was good enough. although he grew up really lonely, it just meant he had more time to focus on his music.
music is something that his parents always wanted haru to pursue, and because of this, he’s classically trained in both the piano and the violin. he was a genuine prodigy, but his innate ability in music only served in further othering him from his peers.
but it didn’t matter much to him— falling in love with music was like he was finally falling in love with life. he never found much purpose in fulfilling his role when it meant nobody truly would get to know him, but music became his new purpose. creating music was something he could indulge in completely by himself.
High School
in high school, haru went to a prestigious arts academy— but still didn’t really have friends, despite many having similar interests. up until now, haru’s natural ability was something that he kept mostly hidden. but he figured that when he attended the arts school, with other prodigies (and other rich people), he would be able to find people similar to him. but his lack of socialization as a child and his disconnect from most ‘normal’ discussions made things more difficult.
although he wasn’t really aware that it was mistreatment at the time, people often picked on him. either to his face or behind his back, haru was pretty much a weirdo to everyone else. it wasn’t so bad to the point it was completely demoralizing, but it was hard to go without someone trying to trip him in the halls or fake-compliment the things that he put effort into.
being an iwada was less cool when people started farming their own opinions about the business, and articles came out detailing the mistreatment of their workers and the implicit bias in the company hierarchy. there was even a more serious accusation on some of his family being involved in money laundering. even though haru himself had very little to do with any of this, he reaped a lot of the backlash.
but— whatever. they knew for themself that they had nothing to do with any of that, besides just being related. but that was obviously never something he could control. he began to loathe the things that he couldn’t control. because outside factors would always determine how other people would feel about him, he decided it wasn’t something to care about. he was fine being alone, because at the very least it meant he wasn’t around people who were going to just hate him for who he was.
College
college was where haru did his first little act of defiance. it’s highly, highly discouraged to alter your appearance as an iwada— but haru began his freshman year with freshly dyed pink and purple streaks in his hair. it was the first time he took control of how he wanted to be, but his parents weren’t that supportive. even though haru started out as a music major, his parents had threatened to cut him off financially if he didn’t change to a business major— something that he begrudgingly accepted.
music was still one of his major hobbies, and he spent a lot of time using the music facilities at deer view university anyway. what he definitely wasn’t expecting, is the first friend he ever made. poppy spoke to him with such joy after seeing him play the piano. she explained that she had just formed a band, but didn’t actually know how to play anything. she asked him to teach her, and since he… really didn’t have anything else to do, he obliged.
stupid april’s band sessions were fun to sit in on. even though poppy wasn’t necessarily the best, he still loved to watch and see her progress. the dynamic between everyone was really harmonious, although a bit messy. he enjoyed sitting in, and the others would happily include him in their conversations. and even sometimes let him play with them!
this all very quickly soured, when through unfortunate means, haru became a more permanent member of the band. poppy had gone missing, and everyone was… really fucking depressed. felix had formally asked him to join, and although he hesitated, he wanted to be able to carry on the memory for poppy. his friendship with everyone else quickly grew awry as everyone became unnverved around him. he never meant to replace, poppy, obviously— but everyone still seems to think that he did. there’s no way it could ever actually be his fault.
and even though it was his first ever friend group, he struggles to truly call any of them friends now. it just turned into another matter of circumstance ruining everything with everybody. he would give anything for it to have been him instead of her.
Notes
- top surgery scars are stylized as music notes.
- haru has near-perfect skin: no blemishes, no scars, completely smooth except for the top surgery scars and his flower tattoo.
- he's almost always seen with a smile on his face, and usually with his eyes closed.
- permanent cat mouth.
- can't particularly dress himself that well, so feel free to just make him look like a loser.
- he has three piercings in each ear! he likes wearing earings that have cuffs, but you can't usually see his ears behind his hair.
finn and haru's relationship has been rocky from the start. since haru gave poppy piano lessons, finn was a little... jealous. haru could sense that finn found him offputting from the beginning, so he maintains a safe distance from him for both of their sakes. it wouldn't be wrong to say they're pretty equally afraid of each other.
mai could not more obviously have a crush on him. it makes him feel a little awkward, but he's glad to have someone that doesn't seemingly hate him. he can sense something incredibly off about mai, though, and he doesn't really know how to proceed about that. he enjoys talking to her, at least.
haru and felix get along great, outside of a band setting. he is a lot more understanding to felix's banter than anyone else who tries to make a jab at him. haru gets a great sense that felix is taking on a lot more than he can chew, though-- and he supposes that he will be there for him when it becomes too much to handle. still, haru struggles to call him a friend, because he senses felix's unease towards him.
haru finds aglais' presence the most inviting, compared to anyone else in the band. he can tell that they're uneasy about the fact he's 'replaced' poppy, since that's what everyone else believes-- but they're still kind to him, and seem to appreciate his role as the one who can deviate the tension the easiest. they're very similar in the way that they both want to avoid talking about anything heavy, although for very different reasons.
everyone adores poppy, and haru is no exception. when she asked him for help learning piano, he was even a bit over-enthusiastic. it was the first time haru got a taste of someone wanting something from him outside of his family connections, and it made them really great friends. haru taking on poppy's role in the band was always something he wanted to do for poppy's sake, to thank her, but clearly it's mostly just backfired.
haru and lily have a lot of similarities, and when they started working together they very quickly became close friends about it. although he has a lot of people he hangs out with and circles he's involved in, lily is the only person that haru would really call a friend. she never judges him based off of circumstantial stuff, and that's all that it really takes.
