JOB Bartender

Westley and Ren's childhood friend and neighbor. He doesn't know they have amnesia and thinks they're shunning him, especially Wes. He's a bartender in Inkopolis. He has no plans to move to Splatsville, as he voted for Order during FinalFest.

I pray one day I'll live to see you break a smile.

MISC. NOTES

  • Collects fake plants, plushies, and hair scrunchies
  • His Splashtag is “HousePlant,” but most teammates call him HP for short
  • Works at Albacore Hotel
  • Has a plant/vine tattoo across his left eye that I often forget to draw
  • He’s awful at saving money which is insanely obvious when you see the room in his apartment dedicated to Kirby merch. Vivian is supposed to sleep in there, but he always wakes up with her in his bed
  • He was Westley’s first best friend (Stewart was actually the second)
  • One of those guys that thinks crying shows weakness
  • He loathes nicknames. Don’t even think about calling him Del or Elly. If it’s not HP, no thank you

PERSONALITY

He comes off as unapproachable and claims to be a lone wolf despite being desperate for social connections. However, he has trouble making friends in adulthood and maintaining relationships. He's a workaholic who sets very high expectations for himself, often leading to exhaustion and burnout. He’s eager to succeed while proving he's superior and not average in intellect. However, part of him also wants to surpass his old best friend, who never seemed to struggle. His absence has made River very cold over the past few years, but other than frequently acting out of spite, he’s an okay person.

BACKSTORY

River grew up in the domes, as did most Octolings, but he happened to live beside Westley and Ren. Due to the age gaps, Westley was closer to River, and Ren was closer to Westley. However, they rarely flew solo. River was extremely independent and had trouble making friends, hence why he tried to do all in his power not to lose them.

Despite their friendship, River had always been a little jealous of Westley, especially once they had joined the army together. While he was younger, Wes was exceptionally talented, excelling at everything with ease, and eventually rose to higher ranks than River. The same applied to grade school, where Wes was constantly placed in higher-level classes than River, despite being two years younger. Nevertheless, he tried to be happy for him even though he felt painfully average in comparison.

Eventually, he got the news that his friend deserted without a word after hearing Calamari Inkantation and that Ren left soon after. Out of sheer anger and the desperation to feel successful, River finished his last year in the army before traveling to Inkopolis where he ran back into Westley. However, he only felt more betrayed when Wes pretended not to recognize him and introduced himself as “Ravioli.” He resents Westley, but under the anger, he just wants to know what he did wrong. He tends to channel his negative emotions towards being productive, which is why he's a workaholic.

After interning as a bartender for a while, he landed a job at an upscale hotel as he worked towards fulfilling his dream of opening his own bar. He enjoys the brief connections he makes with intoxicated customers at work, but he never truly befriends anyone.

His only friend is Vivian, a straggler from the Deepsea Metro who demanded he teach her how to fit in. Although she can be bothersome, he cherishes her presence and would likely fall apart without her, just as he sometimes does over Westley's absence. He enjoys caring for his new roommate as it makes him feel important and boosts his ego when she admires everything he does. Frankly, he had felt like a waste of space until she came along.
