he's a dickhead who couldn't cope w/ the responsibility of being a dad well & one night he realized he was going down a dark path of becoming violent to those he should protect so he decided he'd rather leave them and try to deal w/ his issues on his own instead of hurting them
obviously he did not communicate this well at All, so when he tried to come back into their lives years later they were like [??? no. you left us w/o a note ??? wtf it's not this easy] so now he's just. respecting their boundaries but in a v sad way, trying to send them gifts and thoughtful messages for like birthdays and christmas & just hoping things will get better
