BACKSTORY

Another half-human denizen from Elderwood Village. Unlike Pino, who traveled outside the village under the supervision of Danuta, The Great Spirit, the girl always longed for life outside the village. Despite only being a toddler, she strongly opposed ideas of being secluded in the woods, given she was already convinced there was more meaningful life outside the village.

The forest spirits hoped her cumbersome and unwilling behavior would lessen as she matured, but her hatred for their way of life deepened. The villagers began to believe that her birth was a trial and that her stubbornness was something they would have to overcome to ensure stability in the village. They convinced Danuta that she was a bringer of bad luck and had no connections to the Spirit Tree or Heart of the Forest. Her behavior was constantly loathed, so she was exiled from the village at the age of six.

Danuta placed a spell on Miko to prevent her from remembering her short life with the forest spirits and forced her to live in Castele as a regular citizen. Pam, Castele’s landlady, took her in until she came of age and could choose a Life of her own. Miko is under the impression that her parents were murdered in Deep Elderwood as a child. The lie was constantly reiterated in hopes that she would never return to Elderwood Village. It wasn’t until she became a wizard that her ears and tail reappeared as the new influx of magic started warping aspects of the spell placed on her.

When traveling to Al Maajik in search of answers about the Doom Stones, she understandably interacts with the new Sultan, Damien. He immediately senses the varied types of magic within her aura, both wild and controlled, some of which she wasn’t aware of. Damien and his father found the realization fascinating, whereas his mother, Demona, quickly grew wary of her.

After learning the Dark Sultan was a sweetheart and frankly nothing like his opposers described, she befriended him. She was fascinated by the varied monsters in each corner of Reveria, and Damien figured he would tag along, lending a hand with his stronger magic as she worked to heighten her skills. They journeyed through the Ancient Ruins, but the deeper they went, the more unstable her magic became. The constant attacks from stronger enemies chiseled bits of Danuta’s spell off her, and eventually, her ears reappeared.

Damien figured she was poisoned by one of the enemies, but when she was still in the same state after they turned back, he realized the wild magic he sensed on her was involuntary and that she was indeed cursed. She reeked of Earth magic but had no way of explaining herself since her memories were still cloudy. She was overcome with terror and confusion, causing her to break down in the ruins, unable to fight. Her magic was unstable, often causing her wand to malfunction or for her spells to ricochet and cause damage to herself.

Damien assisted in fighting their way out of the ruins, as the only weapon Miko had available besides her wand was a dagger. Due to her ties to Elderwood Village, she can harness magic without the use of a wand, but the curse prevented her from experiencing it fully. Meanwhile, the predicament in the ruins revealed this fact after Damien realized she was still inadvertently harming herself with her own magic despite being disarmed. He learned that Miko was the source of the magic like him—and didn’t require a wand, which would be a key factor in uncovering the cause of the accident. The presence of a wand had merely stabilized her means of fighting up until this point.

They returned to his throne room under the cover of darkness and successfully kept her hidden from the residents of Al Maajik. Odin helped bandage her up, and after she calmed down, Miko tried to give Damien a rundown of her life up until now despite her lack of details regarding her childhood. Of course, her tales provided little to no answers. Internally, Damien was worried that his magic harmed Miko and caused her mishap in the Ancient Ruins, and although he was weary, he went and vented to his dad. Together, they constructed a spell that would temporarily hide Miko’s animalistic traits and briefly stabilize her magic while she found the root of the problem. At the very least, she wouldn’t be stuck traveling at night to shield herself from regulars.

Miko was forever thankful to Damien and his dark magic, and despite being embarrassed about the predicament within the ruins, it strengthened their friendship. Given the spell was new and required more skill than Damien had, Miko had to return to Al Maajik every few days for it to be recast. However, she enjoyed visiting him, he loved her battle tales, and she eventually would stop by on off days just to say hi.

Miko began to pursue Life as a Mercenary as she was tired of risking her sanity whenever she held a wand. Likewise, Damien’s spell was less strenuous on him if it only hid her ears and tail instead of stabilizing all magic within her. He was already skilled in illusion magic as opposed to the aspects of emanation-centric magic his father knew.

Miko discovered Elderwood while on the path to Lunares, although Doryu, a friend who had been working to destroy the Doomstones alongside her, went in her place as her gut told her not to enter. Still, to board the Goddess Ship, she eventually had to enter the village, although she was still covered by Damien’s illusion spell, and the forest spirits didn’t recognize her. Not only had it been more than a decade, but she looked drastically different as a child.

As a forest spirit, her hair was chestnut and changed with the seasons; Summer was blond, and Fall included variants of red, orange, and brown. Winter was ash brown or white depending on the presence of snow, and Spring included various shades of green. Her ears were drastically larger—likely because she had yet to grow into them but the spell hid her ears and tail, made her hair jet black, barred her use of Earth magic, withered her practice of other elements, and removed any spirit-like trait she held. She instinctually fears Deep Elderwood and the village itself, despite her lack of memories regarding the area.

Alas, the forest spirits were more distracted by the impending doom surrounding Reveria. After saving the world with the help of Yuelia, Noelia, and Doryu, she has yet to return Elderwood. She feels a peculiar connection but is terrified of digging deeper. Regardless, she’ll be dammed if she’s traveling through Deep Elderwood again and getting brutally attacked by the monsters who seem to do more damage to her than any other traveler. Instead, Miko works to befriend every magician in hopes of finding the source of the wild magic controlling her. Through this mission, she became close with Colin who became a great ally of hers alongside Damien and Odin. After finding Origin Island and preventing another calamity, she’s working towards mastering the many Lives available whereas uncovering her past is a mere side quest.
