Birth Parents: Kaos and Glumshanks

Backstory:

Years after the Skylanders hexalogy, Kaos and Glumshanks (released from their jar prison early for good behavior) created Sable using a cauldron and a long, ancient spawning spell; over the course of nine moon cycles, ingredients were slowly added to the cauldron to influence the baby that would be created. One of the many custom ingredients Kaos chose was a small leftover piece of The Darkness' essence to amplify her power and (hopefully) make her as evil as her predecessors. On that October 4th evening, the spell was finally complete; Kaossable was lifted out of the cauldron's depths and declared Kaos' heir.

As a small baby, Sable was very needy and constantly demanded the attention of her parents. As she grew into a small child, she seemingly did a 180 and instead became much more quiet and reserved. The only part of her that stayed consistent was that she always hated the dark. Kaos and Glumshanks couldn't figure out why until Sable could speak well enough to tell them about her nightmares. Kaos didn't think it was much to worry about ("ALL children have nightmares, she'll grow to love them just like I did!"), but Glumshanks' concern made the family move closer to the Skylands' center where they could be closer to the core of light and, in turn, the academy. The move made Sable feel safer when she was awake, but her nightmares never stopped.

Present: Every night when she falls asleep, Sable is haunted by the presence of The Darkness who, thanks to the darkness brewed into her spawning potion, has a mental link to her. It doesn't matter what she does or how badly she tries to stop it, each and every night The Darkness returns and tries to brainwash her young mind into betraying her father as revenge for Kaos' own betrayal to The Darkness. Sable refuses to listen to it and now attends the Skylander Academy preschool wing. By coloring in her elements and reciting the ABCs from a spell book, she's making her first baby steps towards becoming a portal master like her father and grandmother. She and her family hope that by being able to command her own skylanders, she'll finally be able to live a safe life.

Note: Eon and Kaos being related is just a Skylanders Academy thing, but I headcanon that it's true in both universes; it's just a secret that Kaossandra and Master Eon held for years

Kaos ^[father]

If there's any one person or thing in the universe Kaos has a soft spot for, it's his beloved daughter. He hoped while crafting her that she would become a grand villain. That ended up not happening, but he wants to support his daughter even if she needs to turn to the light. After all, he hates The Darkness even more than her (especially now that it won't leave her alone). Sable can tell that her father has an outrageous ego and a lot of evil qualities (even if he's not the outright conquering villain he once was), but finds plenty of parental comfort in him regardless.

Outsiders are always shocked whenever they find out how good of a father Kaos really is, but the truth is he tries so hard to be a loving parent because he's desperate to break the cycle of abuse he and his ancestors went through with their own parents.

Glumshanks ^[father]

Glumshanks is Sable's much more down-to-earth, responsible, and openly loving papa. His undying loyalty goes tenfold for his own daughter and he's constantly looking out for Sable to make sure she's really okay. Sable was so attached to Glumshanks when she was a small toddler that she spent most of her second year hugging his leg like a koala. Sable's very presence makes Glumshanks feel happier than he has in his entire life, so he always let her tag along as long as his tasks weren't too dangerous. Sable prefers walking around on her own nowadays, but Glumshanks is the first guy she runs to whenever she's scared or bullied for her heritage.

Kaossandra ^{[grandmother]}

Sable always tries to hide whenever her grandmother comes over for good reason. While Kaossandra acts like a nurturing, warm grandmother with Sable, she's also extremely judgemental and a little too loud whenever she's scolding Kaos for the way he raises her. Out of everything, she most heavily disapproves of Sable being a troll mix and her family's decision to send her to the Skylanders Academy. Kaossandra doesn't understand why her own granddaughter doesn't like her, but Sable always sees right through her grandmother's friendly facade.

"Sensei Kaos" ^[uncle]

Kaos' sensei clone (who Sable addresses by name to differentiate him from her father) is much more of a cool uncle/mentor figure to young Sable than the original Kaos. He works as a teacher at the academy and has always sided with the skylanders, so Sable sees him as the responsible family member to go to whenever she's away from home for her schooling. They both hope that somewhere down the line, Sable gets to attend her uncle's classes.

Hydra ^{[pet dragon]}

Sable discovered her family's old pet hydra on a walk through the mountains one afternoon. When she came across them, all four heads were loudly fighting each other over a piece of bread that they stole. Sable calmed them down by splitting the baguette into equal fourths for the dragons to share and pet them while they were busy eating. They loved her so much that they followed her all the way back home and once again became part of the Kaos clan. Being the small child she is, Sable nicknamed each head "Skully," "Leafy," "Flamy," and "Bubbles." Sable really wants the hydra to join her at the academy and become her first skylander, but it unfortunately can't due to its immense size and it being directly responsible for Master Eon losing his body.

Eon ^{[grandfather, unknown to Sable]}

For a long, long time, Eon refused to accept Kaos as his son. He had chosen the path of evil and nearly destroyed all of Skylands, so he was no son to him (even if Kaos never knew about Eon being his father).

That part of the family dynamic shifted dramatically when Sable entered the picture (well, more like when she entered the academy). Headmaster Hugo and the school board were hesitant to let Kaos' daughter enter, but Eon was the one who made them change their minds; Sable was entering to destroy The Darkness, so she was clearly on the path of light. It also helped that she posesses the gift of being a portal master, so Master Eon saw bright potential within her. He took her under his wing and made her his personal apprentice alongside Shimmer. Sable sees him as a wonderful grandfather figure, fitting considering how they're secretly related.

Sable is eventually told the truth about the family tree when she gets curious in her early teens. She's actually frustrated and angry at Eon at first because she thinks he just abandoned his own son, causing a brief rift in their relationship where Sable quits being his student. Eon soon fixes it by elaborating and telling both her and Kaos the full story. Sable and Kaos both still hate that Eon kept the whole family relationship a secret for so long, but come to accept the reality of it.

Shimmer ^{[second cousin, unknown to Sable]}

Shimmer is the daughter of Aurora and Barbella who posesses portal master magic just like her famous granduncle. Sable resents Shimmer for being her "perfect classmate," always getting more popularity, a better reputation, and better grades than she could ever get. Shimmer doesn't understand why Sable sees her as competition and just wants to become a portal master with her peacefully, but Sable can't help but see Shimmer as a rival. It doesn't help that Shimmer's biggest fans also happen to be Sable's worst bullies.

Aurora ^{[cousin once removed, unknown to Sable]}

Aurora is the mother of Shimmer and the niece of Master Eon as well as a famed sensei at the academy. She doesn't posess the gift of being a portal master, but is her own daughter's biggest cheerleader. She doesn't consider Kaos her real cousin out of spite, but she gladly accepts Sable as her adorable little cousin. Sable likes the support, but sees Aurora as a glorified soccer mom that talks way too much.

Skyla

Skyla is the daughter of legendary trap masters Knight Light and Gusto and an aspiring trap master herself. She's Sable's extroverted bestie who decided to befriend her when she saw how bullied Sable was. Sable isn't used to having such an uplifting friend...literally, Sklya has the habit of using her large wings to lift Sable into the air when she hugs her! But in the end all Skyla really wants is for Sable to be free from her troubles and she's convinced that the power of traptanium (and friendship) might be the answer.

The Darkness ^[tormentor]

The Darkness is the monster responsible for Sable's familial power, amplified power, and her horrible nightmares. It's not too happy about being sealed in its own dimension to say the least, so it does everything it can to pressure Sable into bringing it back. It can only speak to her while her conscious is away in the land of dreams, so it makes the most of what little sleep she gets. Sable refuses to listen to anything it has to say and hates the Darkness above everything else. She also loathes the Darkness for everything it put her parents through. The Darkness always makes sure to remind Sable that it is the sole reason her family got its powers, but she doesn't care. The only thing she wants is for this beast to LEAVE HER ALONE.

Behind-the-Scenes History: Like Escherichia and Varicella for Destroy All Humans, Sable was made for Skylanders because I love all of Richard Horvitz's characters and anything he stars in. Kaos and Zim are extremely similar characters and I've worked on numerous fankids for Zim, so I needed to make sure Sable was different from them. My friend Genny and I already gave Zim sweet kids and evil kids, so for Kaos I decided to do something I've never done for a villain fankid before: quiet and neutral; this way, she'd be an interesting foil to Kaos' loud, villainous hamminess. I started with a little girl embodiment of the TBH creature and her story naturaly developed from there.

I originally had a much different family tree developed for Sable, but it got completely rewritten after watching Skylanders Academy; that show just LOVES secret family plot twists.

• Sable eventually loses her Kaos birthmark and portal master powers at 16 in a battle with The Darkness
  • After said battle, she's forced to change her goals. She ends up becoming a Skylander of the magic element when she graduates.
• Skyla is Sable's future wife
• In the mirror universe, Sable's reversed counterpart is named Ermine. Ermine is born to a loving family of pure goodness, but she learns the art of dark, evil magic purely to spite the Lightness that keeps begging her to fight evil as her destiny. Ermine isn't evil per say, she just happens to be pestered by the light rather than the dark.
• Sable's miniverse counterpart is an even younger chibi girl named Mink. Sable doesn't meet Mink until after becoming a skylander.
• Kaos and Glumshanks weren't even a couple when they made Sable; Kaos simply wanted an heir and needed literally anyone else to provide the other half for the spawning spell. Glumshanks was the only being in Skylands that was willing to do it, so Sable ended up being their genetic daughter. They ended up getting married when Sable was 2 because they realized their feelings for each other by then and raising her already made them resemble a married couple.
• Because she developed in a cauldron instead of a womb, Sable has no navel
• The TV series Skylanders Academy has its own separate continuity, so Sable's story is completely different in that universe
• Sable's hypothetical Skylanders figure would depict her as an 18 year old magic elemental after graduating the academy. It would have a dark variant justified by the darkness she was spawned with.
