The plainer male threw his head forward, teeth gnashing as he tore from the corpse. There wasn’t much to eat, an elk kill the pack made a couple of days back had lasted the absoluteness of the pack for a bit. And that was all it was, a couple of days. And now they were starving again, the ravenous hunger Helios felt was as if maggots ripped and tore at his insides. He wasn’t much of a hunter himself, at least not skilled enough to complain. But it wasn’t just him on the brink of starvation, the majority of food went to the pack’s young. Who’s growing bellies urged to be filled and who continued to be filled while the rest pick at scraps. He cocked his head, relieving himself a stressful sigh and flicking an ear as a fly landed.

 “You really believe there’s something better out there? Better than this?”

 The plainer whispered doubtful, worry coated his words. And he stared blankly with furrowed brows into the setting horizon. 

“ Maybe, there’s no telling where or when. We just need to have hope, to have patience. .” Replied a delicate voice,  coated in such a sound less honey that it soothed his nerves.
