Despite being a massive flirt himself, Beetlecrawl is completely oblivious to when anyone starts flirting back. He would just take it as them playing along with him. If a potential partner really wants to get his attention in a flirtatious way, any kind of physical affection would be the way to go.

Story
prologue
Briarchirp was a sort of loner in Windclan, having been a kittypet before joining, and switching between training as a medicine cat and warrior as an apprentice. She often kept to herself and avoided other warriors, feeling that they didn't want her there. It wasn't until Nightshine--the current deputy of Windclan-- befriended her that she began to interact more. The two gradually fell for each other, and when Nightshine mentioned wanting kits, they found a donor in Bouncedust.
Unfortunately, that leaf-bare a sickness infected the clans. Starting in Shadowclan, it quickly spread, and medicine cats were at a loss as to how to cure it. Starclan gave no answers, and casualties started to rise. Nightshine became ill, and by extension so did her kits.
kit-hood/adolescence
Beetlecrawl and his sibling were born early due to Nightshine's sickness, and quickly fell ill. By the time leaf-bare ended, Nightshine and Beetle's sibling had joined Starclan. Beetlecrawl, however, was strong enough to fight it off until a remedy was found. Briarchirp names him Beetlekit, for his resilience.
Briarchirp eventually returns to her warrior duties, and is somehow both over-protective of and distant from Beetlekit. He takes notice, and backs off a bit, believing that it must have been something he did.
Beetlekit becomes Beetlepaw, and excels in hunting. He gets a scar from a border skirmish, and Briarchirp fusses over him, treating the scratch herself. Eventually it's time for his warrior assessment, and he passes easily. He is excited to finally earn his warrior name, but Briarchirp questions his mentor on if he's really ready. He interprets her worry as a lack of belief in his skills, and they fight. He begins his life as a warrior bitter and frustrated.
adulthood
Beetlecrawl meets a loner named Skylar during a dawn border patrol, and develops a crush. They continue to see eachother, and Briarchirp eventually catches him sneaking off to see her. He expresses how he wants to be with her, and Briarchirp remarks how ridiculous the thought is, afraid of him leaving her. They fight and he decides to run off with Skylar, joining her and her group of cats.
[wip but basically they don't work out and he ends up leaving]
He decides to leave on his own in the middle of the night, and eventually finds his way back to Windclan territory by new-leaf. He runs into a dawn border patrol, and his mother recognizes him. She professes how sorry she is and how much she missed him, and he does the same. He is welcomed back into the clan after some convincing from Briarchirp and Bouncedust, and begins to rebuild his confidence and wellness.
Relationships
Although he loves his mom, their personalities clash quite a bit. Briar is overprotective and cautious, and Beetle is impulsive and care-free, which causes them to argue regularly.
Beetlecrawl doesn't remember his mother at all, and knows only what Briarchirp tells him. From what he's been told, though, she was a highly respected and kind cat, and he strives to be just as good.
Beetle gets along excellently with his bio dad, often going to him for advice or to just hang out. They love to race across the moor together, and though Beetle has yet to win against him, he hasn't given up.
