Story

Born as Rosalind Eiberg-Pedersen, Rosalind grew up in Aarhus, Denmark. As a young child, she was fascinated by fairytale stories her own parents read to her, but she never truly believed that the monsters were actually real. She always remained level-headed about stories. One story she couldn’t resist, however, was love. At 16, Rosalind fell in love with Jannes, a Dutch researcher who wanted to get his degree abroad. When Jannes finished his research, he wanted to travel back to the Netherlands, and Rosalind - now 19 years old, did not hesitate to travel back with him. She felt like this was true love.

In the Netherlands, she found herself a job at the Clearwater Institute. The fact that she couldn’t speak Dutch wasn’t an issue. Coming from a port city, she was good at English since she had learned it from all the foreigners, and most people at the place spoke English anyway. Most of the tomes and books were in English, and if not, there was always a way to translate.

During researching, Rosalind found that a lot of the books and stories were about paranormal entities - monsters like the ones in her children’s books. While they were probably stories anyway, Rosalind decided to keep an open mind to the possibility that there might be something out there. Why else would people write about them?

Over the years, Rosalind got two children: two lovely boys, named Christian and Magnus. Both Christian and Magnus got children of their own. It filled Rosalind’s heart with joy to know that she had such lovely grandkids. At work, newer people started to join as well, and she has seen some colleagues basically grow up into kind and independent adults. As far as Rosalind is concerned, they are her grandkids as well. So when the time came for Rosalind to retire, she refused, stating that she got emotionally attached to the people at her work place, and that she really likes her job.

One time, Rosalind was working late in the afternoon, having a light on as always. With a tome splayed open, Rosalind was doing her average investigations. What truly happened is unsure: nothing of the events have been recorded. But to Rosalind, it all felt very real.

The lights started to flicker once Rosalind got to a specific page. This already made her nervous, because she had been severely afraid of the dark for a long time, even as a young child. But she had no time to dwell on that thought, for the letters on the book started to blur and shift, rearranging them into different words on the page:

"Only in the dark can one see the truest reflection of what can be. What do you see?"

With a blink, the words were gone, as if the text had never changed at all. As if this was all in her head. It could have been sleep deprivation, the woman thought, so she should probably go home. Rosalind promptly closed the book and put it back on the shelf, deciding to head home for some good night's rest. However, when she came back the following day, the book had disappeared. There were actually no records of such a book even existing. This led Rosalind to doubt herself - she surely had read that book! She even made notes on it… Which also had disappeared. As if she had dreamt the whole thing.

Determined to investigate this matter further, Rosalind continued her work with a newfound curiosity. However, since the whole thing happened while reading, she’s taking a little break from reading documents…
