I.INTRODUCTION.

❝Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic.❞

Nightshade: a medicine, a poison.

Ever since they were reborn, Nightshade has searched tirelessly to cure what they perceive to be the scourge of the times, a plague vast yet invisible, a disease so appalling that humanity has accepted its state and called it natural. To this end, they have needed lives, souls, and countless years to fuel their work, the damaged carapace of their ball-jointed body powered by blue flame and sheer willpower even as their form steadily crumbles away. Their entire identity is doctor, any echoes of their past life scrubbed clean by the amnesia of rebirth as a 'kyrlicht' - an ancient crone dealing in contracts and witchcraft. What waits at the end of their path? Salvation? Destruction?

Design Notes.

  • The mask is not optional. Dr. Nightshade always wears their mask, for better or worse.
  • Design references include the 'Rod of Asclepsius' from myth, victorian fashions, and hints to the number XIII.
  • The back of the cape is mostly unicolor. A secondary reference shows added detail.

III.PERSONALITY.

❝You may refer to me as Dr. Nightshade. I am pleased to make your acquaintance.❞

calm, methodical, knowledgeable

aloof, secretive, formal

irritable, closed-minded, impatient

Overview.

To the Doctor, everything has a purpose. They are economical to the extreme, the type to have every last pencil lined up in a straight row, the type to ration out words and speak slowly rather than thoughtlessly, the type to save a stray penny from the sidewalk in the hopes that it will be used. They are equally as exacting with their knowledge, having developed their mind into an encyclopedic treasure trove of facts. However, it is this same economy that turns into stubbornness and obsession and impatience, as disorder deeply irritates them to the core. In their mind, a tidy world makes for a tidy life, and that is what everyone should strive for. Perhaps it is no wonder that they spend most of their time in solitude.

IV.BACKGROUND.

❝All of my memories were burned away in the fire.❞
TL;DR.
  • Lived in the 1800s, but barely recalls that time, alienated by modern life.
  • Finds purpose through science and a secretive project to save humanity.
  • Nowadays does research/acts as a traveling doctor.

REBIRTH.

The beginning.

Every kyrlicht was once a person, and the Doctor is no exception. Although they can hardly remember their own beginnings, they receive flashes of intuition, insight, and nightmares that are all too vivid to be false. Certain faces cause their heart to ache with nostalgia and grief, the sounds of nature reminding them of a ruined cottage, and the tinkling of a music box brings them to tears. From what Nightshade knows, they are aware that they were born at least two centuries ago, for when they had reawoken, they were baffled to see humanity's progress. There were carriages shaped like metal beasts, a machine that could radiate light to cook food, and the war against the tiny microscopic particles - pathogens - had changed to the point where many men, women and children had received countless shots and vials of healing, more than any village healer or city physician could fathom. The realization hit them hard, and threw them into a bleak spiral in their beginning years. What was the point of their rebirth if they were obsolete?

Finding Purpose.

For ages, the Doctor remained sequestered in a magical realm, their domain, alone. Surrounded by a library and the howling of the moors, they studied the past two centuries worth of knowledge, and knew in their bones that the questions that people had yet to grasp were far more complicated to solve than any questions prior. Transhumanism, experimentation, genetics, these were the next frontiers.

"There is no way out but through. Either I will see this to the end, or it will destroy me."

Another decade was spent in solitude and contemplation before they began their own path to ascencion, having pieced together the signs of calamity. It was a cloudy day in October when they began 'The Great Work,' a project that still consumes them feverishly. Not two days after they vowed to solve this final problem did they make their first contract. Naturally, it was a disaster. But more would soon come.

PRESENT.

Contracts.

In the present, Dr. Nightshade is tethered to a variety of mortals. Even they themselves aren't sure how many contracts they have and can only remember through the writings in their journal, where they have the dates, times, identities and reasonings. However, even with no ability to remember the number, they can feel the effects through their bond - flashes of foreign emotions, thoughts, and illogical reasonings they must talk themselves out of.

Status Quo.

"It has been quite a while since I've seen the sky. I would've never thought before that I could forget its hue, but now the shade of blue eludes me."

Still being a medical doctor, when Nightshade is not caught up in research or maintaining contracts, they tend to treat a myriad of illnesses afflicting the animals of their domain, and if needed, will treat magical fluctuations and energy-related illnesses in other kyrlicht. They typically note down these cases in a growing hardback leather book, stuffed with images and their slanted cursive handwriting, a book which has grown sagging and old with time. An outsider to the major courts of their kind, they will occasionally visit the domains of land, sea, and sky in search of goods, services, and materials to bend for their own purposes. Rarely they will seek out a scintillating companion to discuss matters with or assist another, but being introverted and secretive, they are far from a social butterfly. Nowadays...there's too much to do to waste time with that anyway..

FUN FACTS.
  • Ambidextrous with equally poor handwriting. It always looks like rapid scribbles regardless. The Doctor wrote an entire book of poetry one weekend and was proud to have their dear companions read it. None of them wanted to admit that they couldn't tell what it was saying.
  • Nightshade is unexpectedly fond of modern podcasts and loves to listen to news and books through audio rather than visually. Much to other people's amusement or annoyance, it is hard to tell when they are listening to things considering the mask.
  • Nightshade has a passion against factory-made clothing, and has learned to make all of their clothing by hand, both for comfort reasons (most clothes are too scratchy), but also to replicate old styles that have fallen away.

NOTES.
  • It Must be Clean: Organizing, re-organizing, re-organizing. Shade is hypersensitive to loud stimuli, sudden noises, bangs, shouts, and messy areas, and will do anything to avoid unexpected risks. When they are agitated, they tap their fingers against things or pick at their gauntlets.
  • It Must be Sensible: Debates, opinions, arguments, these are mostly reasonable forms of expression. The Doctor does far better with facts than with sentiments and overwhelming emotions.
  • It Must be Harmless: No disorder must be allowed to take root in their magical domain, which is a space of healing despite its dreary appearance. Dr. Nightshade loathes rogue spirits, and those who are conniving and manipulative, and has no patience for these nor the tolerance.

VI.RELATIONSHIPS.

Dr. Nightshade needs their focus in order to conduct their research, and thus do not desire disruptions or 'frivolous' distractions (parties, high court meetings, etc.). Although they do have friends, these number few and tend to be on the quieter side or able to accept their eccentric habits.

Laurentia

Laurentia has spent all of his formal years beneath the Doctor's wing after their fated meeting 20 years ago, and now trains as an 'apprentice' of sorts, doing tasks to carry on 'The Great Work.' Shade troubles themselves with the human's wellbeing frequently due to his frailty, but also admires his tenacity and strength in the face of difficult life circumstances. After many years, it can be said that the aloof Shade does value and care for him, albeit in their usual strange way.

Ms. Fichte

Ms. Fichte was a fiery, loud-mouthed and bitter sort of a woman, but after much time and reflection, she and the Doctor have come to a stalemate with mutual respect. Fichte is usually on travel to different parts of the world and universe, and is the source of many of Shade's esoteric bits and pieces - chiropterid ribs, void-ink, crocodile gizzards. The Doctor is grateful for her services and works to repay her through reversing the ultimate cost that stole away her old life.

Buttons

There is a teddy constantly sitting at the Doctor's nightstand. Its eyes are falling apart, buttons dangling from plush sockets, and its brown fur has grown faded with time, but they demand that it is kept there, and become agitated if it is moved. Sometimes they pause when walking past it, looking at it for a long time as if they can't bear to part with it.
