Description

Terrestrial and semi-acquatic wyvern

Kayra drakon is a brightly colored, winged reptyle with a high color variability in its scales. It has dorsal, thin but strong and flexible fins on its neck, pelvis and tail that it uses to change direction and find stability when swimming. Its wings are particularly extended rather than large, and this gives these dragons agility to catch prey in flight and fly skillfully around rocky sea cliffs. It has a pair of long sensory whiskers that help it catch odor molecules in water to find prey even there, using its advanced sense of smell.

Behavior & Biology

Kayra lives on solid ground near coastlands and sea cliffs, building its nest in coastal caves or high rocky formations, possibly in secluded places to hide its eggs. It hunts medium-sized prey both on ground and in water. Its prey may include: big fish such as tuna or swordfish, goats, sheep and bigger acquatic birds such as the albatross. Although being of a considerable size, bigger dragons may overtake it by size but its skin a colorful reminder not to try to hunt it. Its body produces toxic metabolytes that deposit in its flesh, so that ordinary predators such as other dragons can't eat it. However, its eggs are a prized treasure and so it is extremely important to choose the right place to nest. Male and females live separately and only meet during the breeding season. Each individual has its own portion of hunting territory, but that applies to the Kayra species only. The breeding ritual includes choices based on the male scales' colors and the female's protective and territorial behavior.

Kayra drakon can be found in the following areas:

  • Coastal and intertidal zones
