Xerlar Elivik
they/them | aasimar | 18
♫ "you swallow hard and you bottle it up, try and pretend you're a half full cup." ♫
Xerlar Elivik is a page hailing from the kingdom of Ignasova, serving the Flamebearer. They currently attend Kingmakers Academy, and is training to serve as a knight beneath the Flamebearer and swearing their oath as a paladin to the kingdom.
They hold very little positive thoughts towards themself, and would only describe themself as a page, if asked. Maybe they would detail a bit about their youth—growing up in an orphanage before becoming a page at a younger age—or about their identity as an Aasimar, but they would not go much past that. They feel shame often, primarily for their struggles with their emotions, and for the instability of their scourge aasimar abilities that this emotional instability causes, the radiant consumption. Xerlar wears a mask bearing a bird-like design, masks that are more traditional to scourge aasimars, and the only item they own from their birth family. They never take it off.
Xerlar is a selfless person, oftentimes to their detriment. Most would see them as a pushover. A bit of a tattletale. Goody-two-shoes. They are by no means inaccurate assessments, but there's something that one could notice lurking beneath. Passion. Fire. Fury. Potential. The only matter is if it'll ever truly come out.
Currently, Xerlar is at Kingmakers, trying to navigate their way through interacting with peers more than they had in the past decade. It's going rather poorly. But the effort is being made. Time will only tell how the year will treat them.

Xerlar is loyal. Unbelievably so, even to those that they aren’t very close to. Xerlar would not betray a person without a monumental reason to do so, and believes in loyalty to others above all. Along with that, they are empathetic to most, though they struggle to express their empathy. They’re more on the patient side. They tend to mull things over for a bit before acting, and aren’t prone to random bouts of impulsivity unless stakes are higher or they are out of their typical rhythm. They would be willing to wait for a while for something. Along with that, they’re protective of those that Xerlar feels like they “owe,” or to those that cannot defend themselves. Their curiousity is more hidden, but they hold an immense sense of curiosity for the world around them, and especially in regards to people. They’ve just really never explored that.
As for more neutral traits, they are obedient, sometimes to a fault. If someone tells Xerlar to do something, and they are in a position of authority, Xerlar will rarely not do it, even if it conflicts with their morals. This is not inherently their nature, and it would be possible for them to stop, but oftentimes, they don’t trust themselves enough to break free from subservience. They’re also serious. They rarely joke, but not because they lack a sense of humor, but because that was simply how they were raised, especially as a page, to be diligent. They do still have a sense of humor, but they tend to miss jokes sometimes also. Their grasp on social cues and norms tend to be lacking in certain regards. Along with that, they’re selfless to a fault. It’s almost as if they don’t see themself as worth much of anything in the grand scheme of things, not unless they are a tool or a weapon or anything of service to someone else. They’re incredibly intense. They can go from 0-100 very quickly in terms of intensity about things, and can often see things as drastically more important than they really are, and occasionally scares people when they get more into this intensity.
Their worst traits tend to rule them, though. As an example, Xerlar is incredibly self-destructive. It's clear by their behavior they don’t care much about themself or even appreciate themself at all. They act borderline reverential with their “rulers”, and treat themself as almost nothing in exchange, acting sometimes unintentionally self-destructively. They can also be self-destructive intentionally, as long as Xerlar feels like they are protecting or saving a person in exchange. They’re a bit of a dichotomous thinker as well. They see the world in black and white often. There is good, and there is evil, and Xerlar desperately feels the intense urge to purge evil from the world. This even applies to themself, though it vacillates often about whether they think they are a “good enough” person, or “irredeemably evil.” They are also more inhibited. Oftentimes, they hold themselves back from everything they feel and desire. Everything is restrained with them, and it can lead to issues and extreme denial about how they really feel about the world and other people and themself. They convince themself that they are completely fine when they’re not. They’re secretly rather a bit vindictive, as well. Although it simmers up a lot less, and only when they’ve taken a more major slight, Xerlar has a strong urge for revenge and even the capacity for hate for others. This is, along with most of their emotions, suppressed, but it can simmer up even still and show in their behavior. It also shows up in their anger. All of these tie back to Xerlar’s root issues, though, which is their emotional instability. They get attatched too quickly, and yet, hypocritically, they oftentimes mantain a sense of distance that can feel cold or detatched to other people, even to people they desperately care about. They just want to love and to be loved, but they don’t know how to show it, and their emotions rule them a lot more than they would like to admit.

Early Life
Xerlar's origins are unclear to them and to those who know them, beginning on the summer solstice of 1516. Their birthplace and parentage are a mystery, the only thread to follow being their aasimar heritage. This lineage gave them raised ridges on their back, vestigial wings, and the radiant consumption, something that would only be found out later in life. Found at the doorstep of Maya's Home For Wayward Children in a small, padded basket, Xerlar arrived with nothing but a black bird-esque mask, magically adjustable in size, and an envelope containing two letters—one addressed to the orphanage workers that apologized for the inconvenience and that implored the orphanage to take good care of “Xirles” (their birth name), and one to Xerlar when they were to turn 18 (they have not received this letter yet).
Growing up in Maya's care, Xerlar showed signs of magical ability, though a bit weaker than usual. However, it wasn't until around eight months later that the orphanage staff discovered the other elemental energy within Xerlar—radiant consumption. These outbursts, initially lasting 15 seconds, were characterized by an intense glow, emanating from cracked scars that formed on Xerlar's skin. The radiant energy spilled from their mouth and eyes. Over the years, these outbursts intensified, lasting a full minute and giving Xerlar an ethereal, blinding glow and a faint smell of singed air.
Xerlar showed signs of neurodivergence in their youth alongside this, and traits that generally set them apart a bit from peers. Despite a brief period of curiosity and seeking friendship, an encounter with a child who would later take the name Asbel Szneh, left a lasting scar on Xerlar's psyche. When the radiant consumption activated after, two feathered wings materialized from their head, and they ran off, the following outburst being the worst they had experienced up until that point. They didn’t try to interact with peers after that, and Asbel made sure to drive that point home, harassing them.
As Xerlar withdrew from their peers, seeking solace among adults in the orphanage, Maya's special attention on Xerlar brought jealousy among the other children, making Xerlar even more isolated. As Xerlar approached the age of seven, though, their life began to take a different trajectory. Sorting through the orphanage's mail, they discovered a flyer advertising the introductory page program, an opportunity to serve the Flamebearer as a page. And intrigued by this, eying the phoenix emblazoned on the flyer, Xerlar sought permission from Maya to pursue this.

MAGIC: Radiant Consumption
The scourge Aasimar's signature trait.
When Xerlar's emotions overtake them, oftentimes the radiant consumption will activate against their will. These outbursts seem to always cause harm, making them a figure to fear, as much as they hate the idea of that. The radiant consumption thus far has been a sign of nothing but bad things, and has been consistently activated with negative emotions. They don't know if the radiant consumption would be different or if it would even activate with positive emotions.
Regardless, Xerlar's radiant consumption consumes a fair bit of their energy, leaving them a bit worse for wear after activation as the radiant energy burns their skin.
When activated, the following effects occur:
- Xerlar sheds bright light in a 10 ft radius
- Xerlar has advantage on intimidation checks, but disadvantage on stealth checks
- All creatures in the 10 ft radius must roll a DC 12 Constitution saving throw. If failed, the creature is disoriented for one round; any concentration on a spell breaks, and the character has disadvantage imposed on their next turn / next 6 seconds if not in combat.
- Any creature in range of the radiant consumption must subtract 1d4 from an attack roll or save once every round. This effect only lasts as long as a creature is in the 10 ft range, and the roll that is subtracted by 1d4 is the first roll the creature makes every round.
SKILL: Noble-trained
Xerlar's upbringing around nobles trained them to be more prepared for interactions with them. Particularly, their upbringing as a page in the kingdom made them able to persuade nobles easier.
Due to this, Xerlar has advantage on persuasion rolls with nobles. In character, this is due less to conventional persuasion and more the manner of respect Xerlar speaks to nobles with, going through the motions and putting themself in a more subservient position.
SKILL: Elemental Hunger
From growing up the Ignisovan way, Xerlar inherited the traditional means of consumption associated with the Kingdom. Xerlar is able to gain sustenance from eating elemental energy in it's most raw forms. Examples of this include fire, water, earth, lightning, and so on. When Xerlar consumes that element, they gain resistance to the element that was ingested. They can only benefit from one resistance at a time.
Along with that, every time a damaging elemental spell targets you, a d20 is rolled, and on a natural 20, Xerlar consumes the spell, taking no damage and instead healing a number of hitpoints equal to 5x the spells level. Xerlar cannot consume spells that are not purer elements, though, such as spells dealing psychic damage and thunder (sound) damage. Along with that, the effect cannot activate for other forms of attack that are more indirect, such as spells that attack the mind as opposed to an actual blast.
Mask acquired as a baby
A traditional scourge aasimar mask. Scourge aasimars wearing masks was a practice that wasn't incredibly commonplace, but it often was used in order to block out some of the world to remain focused at tasks at hand, to retain at least a mild sense of anonymity, and just for the general symbolism some masks would hold. As for Xerlar's mask, it's shaped moreso like a bird, with a sort of beak section and with feather like shapes on the side. The mask is enchanted to always fit the wearer. Xerlar has not been seen by almost anyone without the mask, and its never left their posession. If Xerlar were to lose it or have it taken, they would most likely freak out.
Satchel Bag acquired in the kingdom
A satchel bag Xerlar carries around often, brown and a bit worn. The fabric still holds up rather well, though. Inside, it holds a small glass jar that contains the flame form of Liekki, Xerlar's pet horse. Along with that, it has sticks in it, and now holds Xerlar's Kingmakers' notebook.
Kingmakers Notebook acquired upon arriving at kingmakers
A magical notebook. Has the school directory on it, along with other fun things. The main means of communication for students.
Moontouched Longsword acquired at kingmakers
A sword Xerlar found laying around, a decoy from the Headmistress during the beginning exam. It glows consistently in darkness, shedding bright light in a 15-foot radius and dim light for an additional 15 feet. Damage with it is considered magical slashing damage.
Disguising Cloak bought from masha's mystic emporium
A cloak bought from a rather mysterious woman in a rather mysterious shop that disappeared as soon as Xerlar left it. They paid 3 silver pieces, silver pieces that Masha immediately ate. The cloak is golden, with red embellishments and threading. When the hood is pulled over the head, the cloak disguises the wearer, casting a shadow over their face and changing their features so that they are unrecognizable. Along with that, the cloak's color shifts.
Chimera
One of Xerlar's dormmates. Xerlar feels indebted to Chimera, both for them being the first peer to ever sacrifice their wellbeing for them and also because they didn't judge them upon seeing the radiant consumption. They want to help her, and they care deeply about her, despite knowing her for a brief amount of time. They trust them the most out of the rest of the party.
Sabithra
One of Xerlar's dormmates. Xerlar previously held Sabithra in higher regard, due to her standing as the daughter of the inquisitor, but their respect has dissipated upon seeing Sabithra's interest in and behavior with Lillith, somebody who was likely part of the conspiracy if not at the very least needlessly cruel to Chimera. Sabithra's words about how it was in people's nature to be cruel has stuck with them, but for all the wrong reasons.
Berke
One of Xerlar's dormmates. Xerlar has mixed feelings on Berke, primarily for her more aggressive behavior, a demeanor that Xerlar finds off-putting. There have certainly been more positive moments with Berke, such as Berke offering to protect Xerlar from being peer pressured into drugs at the party, but as of now, Xerlar is a bit unsure of how to feel on her.
Byron
One of Xerlar's dormmates. Xerlar respects Byron a high amount due to her standing as a soldier, and from their brief interactions feels a sense of kinship with her due to their somewhat similar backgrounds. They want to know her better, and plan to have a spar with her soon.
Indren
One of Xerlar's dormmates. Xerlar knows next to nothing about Indren so far, except for the fact that he broke through their window while drunk and after trying to console Nyxus. Very mixed feelings, but not explicitly negative, especially due to what he did for Nyxus.
Nyxus
Xerlar doesn't really know how to encapsulate their feelings on him. Very strong feelings, and a strong sense of protectiveness, certainly. The two of them have kissed twice, and yet Xerlar has never fully kissed her back. Xerlar feels eros for Nyxus, very much so, but they don't want to hurt it. Or at least, more than they already have. They don't want to leave him alone, though, either, especially now that Lillith has befriended Nyxus.
Polaris
A friend of Nyxus. Xerlar, from the brief interactions they've had with her, thinks positively of her. They feel guilt over the fight between Chimera and Nyxus, especially due to Polaris' reaction, and they hope that she has been doing alright. They would like to get to know her a bit better.
Asbel
Someone Xerlar knew in their childhood. Xerlar fears xer. Asbel was the source of a lot of harassment in Xerlar's youth, and while they hold no resentment towards him because of it, it's left a lasting impression on Xerlar. Their presence is enough to make Xerlar anxious, especially because Xerlar fears of the people of Kingmakers, Asbel is the only one that truly knows Xerlar for who they are.
Lillith
Nyxus' friend. Xerlar feels the closest they have ever gotten to hate to her. They watched her goad Sabithra and Nyxus into committing crimes, along with starting a bar fight and hurting people for fun. In Xerlar's mind, Lillith is the antithesis of everything they believe in, especially because Xerlar believes Lillith is most likely involved with the conspiracy that almost killed a good few students. They want nothing more than for her to stay away from Nyxus.
Grex
The library attendant, and Sabithra's childhood friend. Xerlar has only briefly interacted with Grex, but Grex was friendly and seemed incredibly excited by the prospect of Xerlar being interested in playing Labyrinths and Legends with him. Xerlar would like to get to know him better.
Divallio
Xerlar feels positively towards Divallio, though a bit of meekness due to Divallio's significantly higher standing. The two have only just begun to get to know each other, and Xerlar primarily sought Divallio out at first to apologize for what they saw in Divallio's vision the night of the party, even if he did not remember. They feel empathy for his struggles, and want to bring up a specific part of Divallio's vision, but do not want to overstep.
Avalum
Sabithra's brother. Xerlar fears them. The brief interaction that they have had so far was Avalum calling Xerlar out for being indirect, insuniating that Xerlar did something that they were not aware of to Nyxus, and then punching Xerlar in the face. Xerlar doesn't want to make Avalum hate them more, but they don't know what he was referring to, and that bothers them.
Maya
The closest thing Xerlar had to a mother. They feel a deep sense of indebtness and loyalty towards her. They would die for her a million times over if given the chance. They feel a crushing amount of guilt, though, since learning that they have blinded her, and they are searching for the best way to cure her.
The Flamebearer
The one person Xerlar holds in the highest regard. Their employer, in a sense, and the ruler of Ignasova. They fear her, but they also want to serve her, and the following Flamebearers in general, as a knight. The Flamebearer and being a page has been what has given Xerlar purpose, they believe. They owe their life to the Crown.
