Profile

The Tilgull are a large, piscine species from a world of seemingly eternal summer (if you ignore the deep cold depths of the oceans that cover its surface, of course)

But closer to the top of the waters lay thousands of islands and miles of reefs and tide pools. This upper photic zone is where most of the Tilgull make their home. They evolved to take advantage of both the waters of the reefs and the lands of the islands, having a bipedal body plan that is nearly unique to them on their world. Other than the bifurcated legs, the Tilgull are perfect swimmers, with strong muscular tails, limbs, and wide fins to help navigate the waters.

The multitude of islands that coat the Tilgull’s homeworld helped shape the structure of their societies. Their communities are small and numerous, with many minute variations between cultures. Some Tilgull societies even have slight biological differences.
Tilgull sex and gender is an important and complicated part of their culture. The Tilgull have four sexes and a secondary gender identifier of Bright and Dun. Being Bright or Dun is not reliant on the Tilgull’s sex and is a identification based on coloring and patterning of the individual. They can change their coloration at will, and will do so to keep things “balanced”, to help reflect their physical and emotional state, or as a form of camouflage. All four Tilgull sexes are fairly androgynous compared to other species.

Due to the warm climate and island biome of the Tilgull’s homeworld, clothing in most cultures is not viewed as essential, and is pretty much viewed purely as decorative. Making the shift to wearing clothing full time in interspecies space was both difficult for the Tilgull and a major opportunity for clothiers alien and Tilgull alike. Fashion for the piscine species is ever-changing and adapting, but tends towards light fabrics, loose and flowing cuts, and lots of accessories.
