Cain's story actually begins with his mother and her father (Cain's grandfather). She was born into a cult that worshipped the cosmic god of space and time, Yog-Sothoth. Her grandfather was also a part of this cult, and one day, they performed a ritual where they used Cain's mother as a mouthpiece for Yog to talk through. The mother somehow survived this ordeal, but the individuals involved in this ritual mysteriously disappeared. The poor woman quickly escaped the area and the entire cult as a whole. Traveling far away until finally arriving in Lynn, Massachusetts where she eventually settled down and found a man to marry. This peace would not last, however, as she soon became pregnant. Not only was this taxing on her body, but she died during childbirth.
Cain's upbringing was not easy. Not only was his mother dead, but his father -- overcome with the loss of his wife -- would barely interact with his own child. He was also abnormally tall, as well as physically disfigured in the form of a deformed pupil in his left eye. This left him isolated from his peers and ignored by adults. He was isolated for most of his life. So instead of engaging with people, he turned to books. He read whatever he could get his hands on, including his grandfather's journal that he managed to find in his mother's belongings. His mind was filled with terrifying and ancient cosmic deities, strange rituals, and odd markings. Soon he began having nightmares, frightening dreams of a being made from orbs of light speaking to him in a tongue he couldn't understand. Showing him visions of the past, the present, and even the future. But whenever he would wake from these dreams, he would forget what he was shown, what he was told, just the cold sweat on his back and a stream of blood trickling from his nose to show evidence that something had happened. When he brought these dreams up to his father, they would often erupt into arguing fits. So instead of fighting with his dad, he would attempt to write down what he saw in a journal with little to no success. What he manages to write down looks like the scribbles of a madman.
Nowadays, he unknowingly walks in his grandfather's footsteps. He is aware of the gods beyond his reach and is very knowledgeable about them and the language they speak. He has taken a particular interest in Yog-Sothoth, the god in his dreams, as well as his underlings and children. His shabby little apartment is filled to the brim with obscure books, and those books are filled to the brim with his notes. He has tried several rituals to try and get into contact with the gods with little to no success. When his father was away, he even dug into his mother's old belongings to see if he could find something, anything, that would help him get into contact with the gods. That's when he found it, a ritualistic dagger engraved in Cthonic and German. This was the lead he needed. He scraped together what little money he had, and used it to buy a trip across the ocean, hoping to find its origins and answers.
Along with that dagger, he brought a strange vial of black liquid that he believed to be the tears of an elder god, the clothes on his back, and a family heirloom that was an amulet that doubled as a locket. Inside that locket is a black and white picture of his mother, the only thing he has to remember her by.
