 About.

FORCED FROM HARLEM, after their mother sends them to live with their uncle due to unexplained family turmoil, Anita takes up a job offer with an old family friend, but soon learns they've accidentally joined a rumrunning operation that their father had a part in.

Anita has since embraced their rumrunning career, although a number of slights against them has made them thirsty for revenge and aspirations for a larger foothold in the illicit liquor market.

⚓︎ First Face : The World.

How do they behave generally? What do they do if the world has a camera on them?

--

Anita often comes off as rather aloof. They're usually quiet, with an awkward attitude to match, and often not seen in public unless running an errand, subtly cohorting with the even more aloof Mordecai, or taking an occasional night for themselves in a New Orleans jazz club.

There is one trick to get them to open up to a stranger however; just tell them about your worldview or area of expertise, and Anita will gladly listen to anything that gives them something to think about.

⚓︎ Second Face: Close ones.

How do they behave in front of friends and family?

--

Around the few people they keep in good company, Anita is almost a completely different person. Though still somewhat awkward, they shed the quiet, aloof distance for a jovial tone, they dance and hum, rant and make jokes, feeling free to do so around their most trusted people.

⚓︎ Third Face: True Reflection.

How does your character behave by themselves? What is thought from the depths of their hearts, reserved for themselves alone and has never been mentioned in front of anybody?

--

Though many may see Anita's stark contrast in attitudes as some sort of facade, the truth is that both sides are equally authentic, showing Anita's desire to be taken seriously in a career that makes no room for them, but also their desire to delight in little indulgences when the time is right. Anita struggles to shed their maladroit nature that threatens their rigid image.

These traits coalesce best when Anita partakes in their favorite hobby — the pursuit of knowledge, simply for the sake of it, where Anita's quiet yet inquisitive disposition meet.

Design Notes.
  • Anita's design contains some cheetah elements to fit with Asa and Atlas' lion and tiger theming respectively. Anita isn't as strong as Asa and Atlas, but they are fast and opportunistic
  • Anita is also somewhat based off of a flame-point Siamese cat

 Appearance.

Anita has a tiny, boyish appearance. Certainly not the expected face of an opportunistic rumrunner.

Build. petite but fit

⚓︎ Though Anita has a tiny physique that makes them look more like a teenage boy than an experienced seafarer, they have the strength to match, formed by years of hard labor. They have a fair bit of definition in their core and upper arms.

Scars & makrs. scar on right leg, light spots on their lip and right eyelid

⚓︎ Anita has a scar on their right leg from an altercation, as well as the aforementioned light spots on their lip and eyelid. Though this will not show up on their fur until they're older, Anita will gradually gain more light spots on the right side of their body.

Voice. Kim Fields

⚓︎ Anita speaks with a slight New York accent.

Eyes. large, green

⚓︎ Anita has large, round green eyes and heavy eyelids, further exaggerated by the tan fur that fans out by their eyes.

Fur. wispy with a color point pattern

⚓︎ Anita has wispy light fur that fans outward from their face and tail. It has a slight, silky sheen, although it's not uncommon for their fur to become rather ragged due to stress and poor diet. Their white fur is marked with a striped forehead and tail, as well as tan and brown color points on their face and limbs.

wardrobe. typically boyish and muted

⚓︎ Anita prefers to wear men's clothing to combat dysphoria, have suitable workwear, and present themselves as more of an authority. Unfortunately, due to Anita's stature, they're usually stuck wearing clothes made for teenage boys. Their one exception to their typical style is their nightwear, in which they prefer pastel colored women's wear.

Anita often wears Mordecai's old coat, that they had originally gifted to him before he returned it many years later.

Accessories. pocket watch, beret, work gloves

⚓︎ Anita is rarely seen without these. Their pocket watch was a gift from Mordecai, stolen off of a man he was assigned to kill.

 personality.

CURIOUS - CONTEMPLATIVE - SELF-SERVING

Anita is a person of often single-minded focus. They care for whatever strikes their interest in the moment, and lets all the other cards fall as they may.

In some respects, this makes them a jovial and curious sort, happy to engage with all manner of eclectic esoterica just for the sake of learning about it, or trying to decipher someone's life philosophy either in a conversation over tea or from afar, no matter how well they actually know the person they've chosen to survey. They're the person who sits quietly in their seat until they can't take it anymore and breaks into a spontaneous dance, or does whatever odd thing captures their sense of whimsy in the moment, just because they can. That being said, Anita is very much an insular epistemophile, and comes off as rather dry, sarcastic, and socially inept when they aren't avoiding social situations altogether.

In other respects, they're flippant and rude, caring only for themselves and putting on an air of superiority and jaded disregard for anything that doesn't serve them and their closest inner circle. They'll lie, steal, and cheat someone out of just about anything as long as they find it beneficial in pursuit of getting their way or getting retribution.

Anita isn't fond of being callous per say, but they've always been at least a little bit self serving, and they've learned the hard way that making it in the world of elicit booze means being taken seriously and opportunistic through any means necessary. As a result, Anita often puts on a detached persona and doesn't take any slight lightly in order to put up a rugged defense, lest anyone thinks they can take advantage of their otherwise demure nature and appearance.

These two seemingly conflicting sides of Anita come together to create a bit of whiplash for anyone who's unprepared for a conversation to go in ten different emotional directions only to learn that Anita's opinion of their conversational partner hasn't actually changed at all.

anitasketch.png

"What's on your mind?"

01. What's the lie you say most often?

"Lie? Listen, I won't say I don't lie. You kind of have'ta do it in this business, but don't go around assuming I'm some sorta pathological liar."

Anita isn't a pathological liar, but they do lie much more than they let on, and try to keep that a closely held secret so that people will keep their trust.

02. What do you notice first in the reflection versus what most others first notice looking at you?

"I have a white spot on my right eyelid. Couldn't tell ya what other people see though."

Anita is a bit self conscious about the white spots on their eyelid, lip, and other areas of their body, mostly because they worry how Mordecai will perceive them. Outside of this, Anita doesn't really grasp how others perceive them.

03. If you were suddenly challenged, would you rather run away or stay and fight?

"I.... Don't want to talk about that."

Anita is desperate to keep their tough facade front and center, and despises showing anything that could be used as a physical, mental, or emotional weakness. That being said, Anita knows that they don't stand much chance in a physical fight, and doing so brings back memories of the police raid that injured them, and does not want to relive those memories or hint at that existing vulnerability.

If they were challenged, they might not have a choice in the matter if it's work related, but otherwise, Anita will try to deescalate the conflict.

04. Are you proud of who you are?

"That's complicated."

Anita isn't not proud of who they are, they're self assured of who they are, but they also recognize that there are perhaps some things about them that aren't deserving of any pride.

05. Are you afraid of death?

"No, not scared of death. I'd prefer not to focus on it though."

Anita is not afraid of death outside of their basic survival instincts. They accept it as a part of their chosen career, although Anita fears how they'll die, especially knowing that racial violence could very much be the cause of their end.

06. What does a perfect world look like to you?

"I dunno. One that isn't like this."

Anita finds themselves opposed to being idealistic about the state of the world. It's not a luxury they have, so thinking about it feels pointless. They're almost embarrassed for desiring more, but an ideal world for Anita would be one free of discrimination and all of the limitations and harm it entails.

07. What do you see in an ideal partner/s (romantic or platonic)?

"I don't focus on those kinds of things."

Mordecai is Anita's ideal partner, both romantically and platonically. Although Anita won't reveal their relationship of fear of jeopardizing Mordecai's safety. Mordecai is someone who shares Anita's inquisitiveness, makes them feel at home amongst a world of social expectations and nuances that they don't understand, and respects Anita's personal space.

08. Is there somebody you haven't been able to forgive? What did they do? Do you want to forgive them?

"My mom uh... Well, long story short, I didn't appreciate being abandoned all of the sudden. I'm not saying I can't forgive her but... I don't exactly have a lot of trust in her."

Anita understands that there were reasons behind their mom's decision to send them off to St. Louis without warning, but without the explanation for those reasons, Anita feels abandoned and left purposefully exiled from their family, and this shattered trust makes them reluctant to write or visit their mom again.

09. Do you think the future is hopeful? Why or why not?

"Who's to say."

Anita would much rather not think about the future. They know that they could easy die on any given day due to the nature of their job, and wants to keep their hopes for the future grounded in reality.

That being said, there is a small, guilty pleasure part of Anita that hopes to leave the alcohol trade and marry Mordecai someday.

10. What is your darkest childhood memory?

"My childhood was average. Nothing special."

Anita's view of their childhood is perhaps a bit tinted by their desire not to achnkowlege the hardships of the little town they lived in as a young child, filled with poverty and disease. They don't want to think about the disenfranchisement they've faced since birth, and would rather see it as a simple, rural upbringing.

  • Having provided Asa with a sample of the high quality liquor they've procured behind Kehoe's back, the deal is sealed, but Mordecai soon realizes that some of the liquor had been adulterated when a prominent patron of Marigold dies, though his death is chalked up to his own over-indulgence. When Anita discovers this, they throw themselves into a search for a new, reliable supplier, focusing on trying to find any of their father's connections
  • Having found a lead to said connection, Anita murders Kehoe, takes over the business, and officially leaves for Marigold
  • Mordecai begins to sabotage Anita's attempts at finding a connection to their father

The little things

  • 1900: Anita was supposed to have siblings, however with their mother facing pregnancy complications, this never materialized
  • 1905: Anita learns how to fish barehanded
  • 1909: The train that took Anita and their family to New York was Anita's first time in a vehicle

Anita was born in Miami, Florida to a small farm family. In 1910, a hurricane flooded a portion of their farm, and Anita's grandfather passed due to his alcoholism, leading Anita's father to look to settle elsewhere.

When Anita was eleven, their family relocated to New York City, a neighborhood called San Juan Hill, specifically. Their mother began work as a seamstress, and so did their father on the casino boats, though Anita needed to help their mother with their seamstress work in order to make ends meet. Anita's father would often refer patrons of the casino boats to Anita and their mother for tailoring work for a bit of extra money.

The little things

  • 1912: the Titanic sinks, beginning Anita's fascination with shipwrecks
  • 1913: Anita teaches Mordecai how to fish
  • 1916: Anita steals money from their parents to buy Mordecai and his sisters new coats
  • 1917: Bookie helps Anita transition
  • 1918: Anita takes up tap dancing

1910 - 1916: On the days when Anita's father was scheduled to come home from work, Anita would often travel to the docks of the East River to watch the boats, hoping to see him return. Though he often didn't even visit the same docks Anita frequented, they developed a fascination with the area, eventually leading them to the nearby Webster Library while trying to take shelter from a storm.

Anita once arrived past closing during a storm, the librarian was kind enough to let them take shelter within the library, where they spotted a boy reading a book on aeronautics. With Wilbur Wright's recent Hudson-Fulton Celebration flight having caught Anita's interest the previous year, they couldn't help but want to get their hands on the book themselves, so they keep their eye on him to figure out when he'll return it, though Anita grows frustrated when he continues to read the book on multiple occasions.

He's standoffish and blunt, which scares and aggravates Anita, but they're not willing to give up on getting his attention, though he initially ignores and avoids Anita, but once they ask him about his opinion on the viability of aircraft for use in warfare he can't help but open up to Anita once he realized that they're just as interested in all manner of nerdy subjects as he is, and soon they become close friends. Anita eventually learns that his name is Mordecai.

Though their friendship primarily consists of meeting each other at the library, they would take occasional outings to Central Park or Coney Island, usually alone, but sometimes with his younger sisters in tow. As years pass by, they've grown mutual crushes on each other, and their parents can see the effects they've had on each other but don't approve due to their difference in background (on a few occasions, Anita even goes as far as stealing money from their parents to buy new coats for Mordecai and his sisters, getting themselves in quite a bit of trouble to do so).

No matter how intense however, their crushes go unrequited and they grow distant when they don't know how to process their feelings on top of other pressing issues in both of their lives making crushes seem trivial in comparison, and by 1916, Mordecai no longer stops by the library, and they've lost contact completely. Anita is heartbroken at first, but they eventually figure that it's best to let go of a childish crush.

1917: Things are changing in Anita's life, too. Their father had recently gotten a promotion, allowing them to move into a nicer apartment in Harlem, however, tensions between their parents flare as Anita's mom grows increasingly suspicious of his new "job" that's allowing him to afford this new apartment amongst other luxuries, fearing that he's gotten involved in illicit activities. Though Anita does not see this conflict due to them being in St. Louis with their uncle Bookie at the time, Fearing the further escalation, Anita's mother instructs them to stay and live with their uncle, hoping to shield Anita from the tension until the issue is resolved, however, Anita's father has since gone missing, and Anita is left in the dark about the entire situation, leaving them feeling distant and not truly a part of their own family. Anita cuts ties with their mother, now feeling lost and abandoned.

Away from the conflict, they've since taken up a job with an old friend of Anita's father, Captain Kehoe, assisting as a deckhand on his tugboat.

1920: When prohibition begins, Anita learns that for two years now, Kehoe had been running a drug smuggling operation on his boat right under Anita's nose the entire time they worked for him. And now, the money was in illegal alcohol. But by this point, it was too late. There was no leaving the mess Anita found themselves in, and though Anita didn't particularly care for Kehoe, they simply went with it and became a more active part in the operation, now sharing the profits and making a pretty penny for themselves.

Now having firmly embraced their turn to booze, Kehoe and the crew begin supplying up and down the Mississippi river, and some months later, Anita makes a fateful reconnection after a couple of indecisive chance meetings when they finally recognize a familiar seeming man as none other than Mordecai. As it turns out, he's recently come to St. Louis, and began working for one of the largest speakeasies in the city, the Lackadaisy. A speakeasy that Kehoe and Anita just so happened to supply to.

Mordecai and Anita would talk on occasion, but it was clear that he had changed since the last time they saw each other. He had a darker aura about him, traded his ill-fitted clothing for tailored three-piece suits, and became rather guarded. Anita eventually became concerned about his distant behavior, especially as they still saw glimpses of the boy they had fallen for long ago, and those feelings were beginning to re-emerge, having never truly left. They begin to rebuild their relationship, and after some time, they've both fallen for each other again. Though they still don't quite know how to parse each other's feelings, with Anita wondering why he's gotten so cold, and Mordecai wracked with guilt for leaving despite the treacherous circumstances that causes his sudden departure on top of fear that letting Anita back into his life after his career turned him into a triggerman could put them in danger. Though they eventually become aware of each other's feelings, they don't act on them, fearing the risks that come with being a couple, alongside their general confusion around what their relationship means as two people who have otherwise been opposed to romance.

1924: Kehoe's operation is raided by police, leaving Anita injured with a broken leg in the scuffle, but not without having killed a police officer.

After the raid, Anita is taken to a local cattle veterinarian, where they stay in his care for the next five months until the injury is healed, although not without incident, as Anita wound up concussed after attempting to walk on their own, and falling after putting weight on the broken leg. While in the doctor's care, Anita contemplates heavily, wondering about where their life has gotten them, and feeling abandoned by their crew, who had left for St. Louis without them. In the meantime, Anita writes to Mordecai, but refuses to inform Bookie of their whereabouts, unsure of what to tell him about how they've found themselves in this situation.

late 1925: In the meantime, Anita is catching up with Mordecai and if you squint... You might be able to tell that... they seem to be a couple now? Or at least, that's what Mitzi, Atlas, Ivy seem to have figured, but no one can be too sure, really. The two of them really are just that reserved. But maybe that's what makes them perfect for each other?

Even after returning to work, between the police raid and repeated thefts from hijackers, the business never really fully recovered, even a year later, and they're quite literally barely floating by. Kehoe was never a particularly earnest type, and the liquor he peddled was never of the highest quality, but now that they've gotten desperate, he's been cutting the stuff with embalming fluid, and their buyers haven't exactly been pleased with it. If this continues, Anita feels that they may have to take matters into their own hands. On top of this, Bookie's discovered that the reason for Anita's sudden disappearance was their rumrunning career that they had previously been keeping secret, He kicks Anita out, due to his own attitudes about drinking and the liquor trade, forcing Anita to live on Kehoe's boat, but not before giving Anita a grim ultimatum that he had briefly kept in contact with his brother before he went missing, discovering that he too had gotten into the illicit alcohol business, and that Anita's fate is bound to be similar if they don't change their ways.

1926 - 1927: However, budding presumed-romances are the least of Lackadaisy's concerns when Atlas is mysteriously killed. Tensions flare, the former glory of the Lackadaisy falls to pieces, now nothing but a struggling shell of its former self.

Shortly after Atlas' passing, Mordecai begins to take notice of Anita's declining condition due to their housing situation and offers to let Anita stay with him. Though he feigns that he's simply concerned for their wellbeing, the truth is that he's become grief stricken by Atlas' death, and invited them in part due to a desire for Anita's comfort.

Even Mordecai has given up his allegiance to Lackadaisy for the new bigshot speakeasy in town, the Mirabel Hotel, run by the Marigold gang, and he urges Anita to do the same, fearing that Anita will become caught in the crossfire if Mordecai ever has to "deal" with his former colleagues.

Not to mention, that without the Lackadaisy, Kehoe has little hope of staying afloat. Not to worry though, Anita had already seen the writing on the wall years prior and agrees to defect to Marigold. However, Anita soon realizes that there's more to Mordecai's change in employment than just looking for greener pastures. Of course, Anita's reasons aren't so cut-and-dry either. The money is there, yes, but now all Anita needs to do is stay with Lackadaisy for just a little bit longer... Just to tie up some lose ends and leave a message.

While on a rum run to New Orleans, Anita strikes up a deal with a supplier who smuggles high quality foreign liquors into the United States, promising him that they'll have the money to pay him the next time they visit new Orleans. At the same time, Mordecai begins talking with Asa to set Anita and him up for negotiations.

Mr. Sweet is initially skeptical of the deal, citing their former raids as a sign of suspicion, but Anita reassures him that Kehoe and Lackadaisy's careless nature were the ones to blame for the raid, these days, those hijackers were actually already working for Marigold too, and relieving Lackadaisy of a supplier is just one more nail in its coffin, sweetening the deal with a case of whiskey and a bottle of champagne for Poppy in addition. The deal goes through, and all Anita needs to do is wait for the perfect opportunity.

A few weeks later Mordecai is tasked with disposing of a frequent Marigold Room patron due to suspicion that he may be an undercover prohibition agent. Conveniently, Mordecai finds him dead in his own home, but soon comes to the realization that he had been poisoned, most likely by the very liquor that Anita had supplied. Mordecai swiftly moves to obscure the cause of death, discarding the tampered product, while Anita comes to the realization that they've got to be more discerning about their choice of supplier, fearing Marigold's retaliation if they continue to kill their patrons. Anita begins a search for a new reputable supplier, remembering that Bookie had previously informed Anita of their father's bootlegging career. Perhaps, Anita thinks, they can find a connection through their father's name, or perhaps even find him once again.

Using the leeway granted by Asa after a massive flood prevents the crew from sailing down the Mississippi, Anita begins to research, and eventually finds an old photograph of a ship crew. Anita recognizes some of the men — Kehoe, and their father. If Anita can simply figure out who the rest of these men were, especially with the help of another crew member who was familiar with the east coast bootlegging scene, they're confident they'll be set.

May 27th - 28th, 1927: Lackadaisy's troubles continue to pile up. They're robbed then raided by Mordecai and some rowdy pig farmers that seem to have a score to settle with the place, and all the while Anita knows they'll be next to betray them, doing so on the very next day, in fact. They feel a little bad, just because the circumstances are so unfortunate, and poor Ivy certainly doesn't deserve any of this, but Anita can't feel too bad, it's just business. Soon enough, Kehoe meets a quick end, though not without Anita making sure that Kehoe knows he's about to be murdered by the gang he could have been profiting from, dumping his body just outside of St. Louis. And now, Anita is officially a supplier of Marigold, leaving the Lackadaisy to scramble back to an old supplier for any hope of keeping their business afloat.

Part of Anita's success in disposing Kehoe was in part due to their colleague, Billy, who, while struggling with feelings of guilt brought on by the knowledge of Mordecai's upcoming forceful indoctrination into Maitre Carrefour, though not knowing the exact date of said indoctrination, finds himself manipulated by Anita into doing their bidding when Anita lies to him about needing to visit Mordecai to check on his wellbeing, then takes advantage of his own personal disdain for Kehoe to coax him into assisting with his murder. With his knowledge of the east coast bootlegging scene along with his status as the accomplice to murder, Anita relies heavily on Billy.

May 29th, 1927: Just as Billy insinuated the day before, Serafine goes on to indoctrinate Mordecai into Maitre Carrefour by carving a diable into his chest, although Anita is not made aware of this until a few days later, having not seen him after lending his hand in Kehoe's murder. Serafine's actions spur on a disdain and fear that Anita begins to hold for her, knowing that their partner was so easily hurt by her.

Billy goes on to become the new captain of the their operation, although he's more of a puppet captain, with Anita still pulling at the strings.

Date unknown, 1927: Mordecai realizes that Anita is using their lead not only to find a reliable connection to the liquor trade, but also to chase their ideas of grandeur surrounding their father's legacy. Fearing that Anita is disillusioned in chasing this white whale, and believing they'd be better off chasing a more realistic goal, Mordecai begins to sabotage Anita's attempts at establishing a connection, first by passive aggressive means, then with obvious force as he tries to convince them that they're chasing nothing but a nostalgic illusion.

1928: Anita leaves the rumrunning business after noticing its decline in profits, having become satisfied with the hefty profits they've made within the past couple of years. Supported by Mordecai's still ongoing criminal career even into the depression, the two decide to save up to move to Boston and get married once the depression ends.

1930: Anita visits Mordecai's mother in New York. Though Mordecai does not visit her due to his concern that the mob may still have it out for him, Anita lets her know that he's safe and that Mordecai had proposed. This concerns Zippy at first, but she grows to accept Anita with time.

1941: Anita and Mordecai move to Boston, where they meet a teenage girl by the name of Edna who breaks into their house trying to hide from her pursuers. Mordecai subsequently kills them, and the couple take Edna in, as somewhat of their adoptive daughter.

1942: Anita and Mordecai marry, though not without a little drama regarding Mordecai's family after they reunite, regarding Mordecai's choice in partner and Edna, who his family believes is Mordecai's daughter, had out of wedlock.

1972 - 1979: Having lived an eventful life but now settled, Mordecai passes away in his sleep due to a stroke. Anita later passes in 1979.

⚓︎ First Encounter and Impressions.

Anita and Mordecai first met as teenagers, frequenting the library. Though Anita was initially only interested in getting Mordecai to let go of the book he had been hoarding, Anita eventually engaged with him over their mutual natural inquisitiveness, and the two became close friends. This friendship eventually evolved into mutual crushes on one another, though they soon grew uncomfortable with the feelings, and other aspects of their lives eventually saw them growing more distant until eventually, Mordecai stopped visiting the library. Anita told themselves that they had just assumed the feelings were an immature crush, and moved on with their life.

The pair coincidentally united in St. Louis some years later, where the slowly began to rebuild their relationship, reigniting Anita's romantic feelings for him in full force.

⚓︎ Attitudes and Dynamic.

Mordecai and Anita's relationship has always been one of slow, steady growth, from their awkward friendship as teens, to their reacquaintance and eventual romance as adults.

Their bond is based on their previous history and their ability to find solace in each other's similar personality traits and interests, but it's also tied to their (lack of) experience in relationships in general. They're both asexual and aromantic, and figuring out what navigating a relationship like theirs even looks like decades before even having the terminology for it, but their unconventional approach to it, although daunting to Mordecai for it's unfamiliarity, allows them to explore things at their own pace without feeling beholden to the typical restrictions of the expectations of typical heterosexual relationships of the time.

Anita is Mordecai's safe, stable person to confide in, someone who respects him and his boundaries, and has the patience for his eccentricities, but also allows him to peek out of his comfort zone when it comes to understanding his emotions.

Mordecai is Anita's grounding force, a place away from the chaos of their job, who allows them to indulge in a side of themselves usually reserved for silent, solitary introspection, and allows them to find companionship in a partner who is equally as aloof as them without worry of being smothered by the typical fanfare of relationships.

⚓︎ Hopes for the Future.

Anita hasn't thought a whole lot about their future with Mordecai, not for lack of want, but for the simple reason that they're quickly humbled by the all to real threat that their potential deaths could be right around the corner at any moment. But when Anita allows themselves those glimpses into the future, they struggle to see anything else but an eventual happy marriage with Mordecai. They want a future where Mordecai feels completely unburdened by his job, and by his emotions.

  • Anita and Mordecai's ship name is called Hellerway or Singularity Point, named for both the concept in mathematics, and the concept in space
  • Anita and Mordecai may have classified their relationship as queerplatonic if that term had existed at the time

✧ First Encounter and Impressions.

Poppy works at a local diner that Anita often frequents, and the two began idly chatting about their shared interest in books, soon becoming close friends.

Anita wasn't exactly looking for a conversation partner during their lunch breaks, so while Anita was initially rather blunt and occasionally dismissive of her, they grew to appreciate her presence once they began engaging in more academic discussions.

✧ Attitudes and Dynamic.

Poppy is now Anita's best friend and one of their closest confidants. Though they still enjoy their academic talks, much of their conversations tend to revolve around their relationships and the struggles they face in dealing with their particularly difficult partners, and if they're not doing either of those things, they're probably off exploring St. Louis, whether that be the parks, theatres, or the river.

While Anita is somewhat protective of Poppy, (as they can tell that she's unaware of the risks she takes by cohorting with both Lackadaisy and Marigold members), Anita can also be a bit dismissive of her as well due to her avoidance of topics surrounding Anita, Mordecai, and Wes' professions. As far as Anita sees it, it's a naïve luxury to be able to turn a blind eye to the work that the people closest to her are involved in, and refusing to acknowledge it only puts her in more danger.

There are admittedly, a lot of things Anita still doesn't know about Poppy either, such as her struggles with friendship and feeling loved.

✧ Hopes for the Future.

Anita hopes for a future where Poppy and Wes have a successful relationship, that Poppy is able to live a relatively normal life without the worry of involvement in the criminality she often finds herself so close to, and that they can remain friends, but also that she will shed her naivety and see the events happening around her for what they really are.

  • Anita is the first close friend Poppy's ever had
  • Anita occasionally brings trinkets from work back to Poppy, usually small spoons, berets, or teacups

⚓︎ First Encounter and Impressions.

The first encounter between Anita and Edna was anything but usual. Staring each other down at gunpoint, it took several tense moments to realize that the teenage girl who had broken into their home was not in fact a burgler, but a scared kid who had entered in a desperate bid to save her own life by attempting to hide away from her pursuers. Awoken by the break in and subsequent gunshots, Anita comes downstairs to find Edna standing over an unconscious Mordecai with the dead pursuers at her feet. Once Mordecai awakens, he explains how Edna had saved his life, and Edna explains her side of the story, Anita consoles the poor girl before escorting her home. The subsequent week, she returns with some money, hoping to apologize for the damage she caused during the incident, but Mordecai turns it down knowing that Edna certainly couldn't afford to pay them so much. Instead, Mordecai offers to mentor her, just as Atlas had done for him. This begins a relationship between the couple and Edna, eventually culminating in them practically becoming her godparents.

⚓︎ Attitudes and Dynamic.

Anita has a lot of sympathy for Edna and wants to do anything in their power to help her, especially after they see just how much Mordecai clings to her. Despite finding her haughty attitude a bit irritating, Anita can't help but adore her.

⚓︎ Hopes for the Future.

All Anita desires is a happy and prosperous future for her and her family, and they don't mind having to dip back into their former life of crime to achieve it.

  • Mordecai's mother and sisters are under the impression that Edna is Mordecai and Anita's daughter, born out of wedlock. The only reason they don't dispute this is because Mordecai doesn't want to tell his family the true story.
imagehoney.png

Though Honey has always had Anita's best interests in mind, Anita can't help but feel abandoned by their mother after she suddenly sent Anita away to live with their uncle, not knowing why until beginning to piece together that it had something to do with their father's criminal activity, but they're sure they still don't know all the pieces, and likely never will.

Anita feels that their mother was emotionally unavailable in their life, leaving them feeling less like a part of their own family.

Anita attempts to bury these feelings of uncertainty and abandonment by distancing themselves from their family altogether, but the walls they've put up are undeniably fragile.

imagepresley.png

Though some may regard Presley as a two faced liar and absent father, Anita sees a man who was forced into illicit work to provide for his family who tried the best he could to keep his work and home life separate despite the unfortunate circumstances. In many ways, they're quite alike — it especially seems that Anita has inherited his ability for giving people the runaround and his enthusiastic curiosity.

Anita was close to their father, and the conflict that brewed between him and their mother culminating in Anita's relocation to St. Louis left them feeling bitter and infantilized amongst an already tense relationship resulting in Anita breaking contact with their mother.

In their father's absence, Bookie in some ways Anita wished was their father. He's the one responsible for Anita's musical enthusiasm, and the one who provided the emotional support that their mother did not understand they needed. However, when Bookie discovered that Anita's gotten into the bootlegging business themselves, he kicks them to the street, accepting that he must create an irreversible rift between them, a result of his intolerance for vices such as drinking and gambling due to his own past with his father and his brother, Presley.

⚓︎ Tzipporah "zippy" heller.

future mother in-law
zippy.png

Though they never formally met during Anita's time in New York, Zippy was well aware of Anita's presence, finding it rather endearing that Mordecai finally found a friend. She sensed there might be a bit more to the relationship than "just friends," particularly when Anita gifted Mordecai and the siblings new coats just because, and she is a bit bothered that Anita was a bit of a troublemaker, but she wasn't all too concerned as long as Mordecai is happy. Anita, in turn, attempted to make a good impression on her through Mordecai.

Zippy's concerns only grew further when Anita visits her 14 years later, dropping the bombshells that not only do they know where Mordecai is, but also that they're engaged to be wed. She feels that her greatest fears have come true, and that it was Anita who lead him astray all those years ago, prompting her to adopt a rather tense relationship with Anita, which only grows more strained when she comes to the mistaken conclusion that Edna is Mordecai and Anita's child had out of wedlock.

Though Anita is able to dispel some of the myths, it still takes some time for her to come around to them.

Anita and Esther got along quite well as kids. Though they didn't know each other all that well, it wasn't uncommon for her and Rose to tag along on Anita and Mordecai's excursions. While Anita enjoyed indulging in a bit of mischief with her, they have difficulty comprehending the lengths she goes to antagonize her brother.

They've had quite a few squabbles in which Anita tries to defend Mordecai from his own sister's wrath, and on occasion, ends up on the receiving end of one of her pranks too.

There are few people in the world Anita desired to protect more than Rose. She was a bright, young girl who reminded Anita of themselves when they were younger, and as a result, they wanted nothing more than to foster her curiosity and creativity. That being said, she's certainly a handful and Esther, Anita, and Mordecai always seemed to be playing tug-of-war over Rose, trying to get her to side with them for the purpose of pranking or defending Mordecai.

These days, Rose is a mother, and once Anita and Mordecai reunite with his family, Anita encourages him to spend time with his niece. Anita is happy to see that she hasn't lost her joyful spark.

Kehoe is a friend of Anita's father. Though he was close to Anita's father, Anita themselves doesn't exactly feel the same. He's an old, mean, crusty, cheapskate of a man that Anita feels is clinging to hopes of monopolizing on the barely-afloat Lackadaisy, rather than looking towards new opportunities with Marigold. And when business relations go south in a career path like theirs... well...

Though 'friendship' is perhaps a strong word for their relationship, there's no denying that Billy and Anita flock to each other for company whenever the lonely isolation of the sailor's life becomes too much to bear. The pair have become solid dance partners, at first just to pass the time, but sometimes even just for the fun of it when they aren't out on the river.

That being said, not everything is as it seems between them. Though Billy is more experienced in matters of seamanship, Anita takes advantage of his emotional issues and war trauma to make him their puppet captain of the operation in order to dispose of Kehoe.

Anita has none other than Mordecai and Poppy to thank for allowing them into Asa's good graces. With their support, intentional or not, Anita was able to weasel their way onto Asa's payroll and leave Lackadaisy behind.

The work under Marigold is good, but Anita suspects that Asa's only interested in keeping them around not to contribute anything of value to Marigold, but simply to starve out Lackadaisy. For this reason (paired with his rather intimidating presence tucked beneath his Santa-like facade) Anita tends to walk on eggshells around him.

Though unsure of the nature of the relationship, Asa knows there's something between Anita and Mordecai, and while he pokes fun about it, in truth he's keeping an eye out for any suspicious behavior between the two Lackadaisy-runaways.

When Atlas was alive, the only thing Anita knew about Mitzi was learned from Mordecai's complaints about the way she teases and prods at him. Anita considered her fairly harmless, all things considered, but with her running Lackadaisy, Mitzi and Anita have a... close relationship. Not one of mutual trust or friendship per say, but one made from the knowledge that beneath their bubbly exteriors is a ruthless businesswoman, ready to step on whoever they need to reach their goals. This is great when they're allies, but when they aren't, it can get ugly really fast.

While Anita feels for their plight, it won't stop them from taking advantage of the situation.

Anita respects that Mordecai sees Atlas as a father figure held in high esteem, Anita can't help but secretly despise the man for corrupting and indebting Mordecai after realizing that Mordecai's switch to Marigold was motivated by his grief for Atlas, and not his own personal wants as they has originally assumed.

Viktor and Anita never talked much. They knew of each other, and Viktor would often unload liquor shipments that Lackadaisy received from Kehoe, but the most Anita really knows about him other than that is that he was a friend of Mordecai's.

When it comes to people involved in the criminal underworld, Anita has few qualms about screwing someone over one way or another, however Ivy is one of the few exceptions. It's clear that she doesn't quite understand what she's gotten herself into, and Anita doesn't really want to be the one to give her that wake up call. Perhaps if the situation were different, they'd be good friends.

If there's anyone who understands Rocky's logic, it's Anita, but that doesn't mean they're going to start taking advice from him. Anita finds themselves curious about his various eccentricities and wonders if maybe they have something to do with his graduation from the band to the pick-up boy, but they haven't interacted with him enough to glean much more than that. Perhaps Anita should be a bit more worried about being on the wrong side of his loyalties.
