Profile
Alef
Overview
Alef is a Feyfolk with a piercing gaze and voracious mind. He's a lover of debate, quick to get involved, and stubborn beyond belief. Though there are parts of his past he rarely speaks of, that past is plainly visible on him. He is an Ascian, casting no shadow and magically wounded in the right arm, while most strangely he is permanently stuck in his autumnal form. He is intimately familiar with magic and nature, quick to put others ahead of him and reject compliments. Alef's open about his apprenticeship with an elven wizard, from whom he learned magic, studied the phenomenon of time and became adept in the subtle art of Chronomancy. All in the pursuit of one thing.
After years of efforts, he feels like he's closer to a cure to his curse than he's ever been. All he needs now are some obscure materials... Although, with the new people he meets and the intrigues which saturate Caelith, it seems his path might take a few detours along the way.
What a little guy!
Before you ask, yes, I know it's summer. Long story. No, the weather isn't different 'up here', whatever that means. Can we just barter for the Aries' Root and move on, please?

Demeanor
Alef fidgets with his glasses and polishes them when nervous- he also has a habit of staring too long and asking random questions. Low entryways are also a challenge- he'll sometimes miscalculate and hit his head, to his deep embarrassment. Alef considers books to be sacred in a sense, and the destruction of them personally offensive. He'll reapply his bandages occasionally, and he files down his black nails often enough for them to be blunted. Alef suffers from night terrors, and has a tendency to feel nauseous at the sight of blood.
He can come off as a bit blunt and rude, but he takes and gives criticism well. He's competent at reading battle cues, but prone to messing up elsewhere. For example, taking things people say a bit too literally. Though he CAN lie, he always has to plan lies ahead of time- but not too far ahead of time, or he gets obsessed with the tiny details. He speaks to children like they're adults, speaks to animals like equals, and even speaks to... Plants like equals.
Generally he's pretty subtle and lowkey. But when he considers you trustworthy, you can tell! He's quick and teasing with banter, open with his body language, much more patient, fond of giving gifts and staying close. He's pretty protective, too.

Design notes
- He casts no shadow! I sometimes mess this up. Shadows still affect him, however.
- Not often visible are the permanent Ascian black scars on his arm, which sometimes let off smoke.
- The glasses have gold frames- They also hook over the ears.
- His eyes are not gold! They are just light yellow!
- Unique eyebrows- Basically three stacked lines
- For the whiskers, I draw one set on the eyebrows and two sets around the face. If you don't wanna draw them, that's no problem!
- He's got white and beige freckles on his forehead, nose, cheekbones, and all along the darker parts of his fur, reminiscent of a fawn.

Forest
- Grew up in nature, as well as being taught giant folktales and mythology
- Had a beastfolk friend
- Basically constantly got up to trouble
He considers this time a separate life; his childhood and early adulthood. He'd rather people assumed he lived in a city, but his origin colors the way he sees the world, and explains certain gaps in his knowledge. He grew up in an isolationist Feyfolk community, the kind following the old ways and avoiding humanity. He knew the entire community, and could still tell you the name of every person there, but he never felt like he entirely belonged, nor did he manage to make many friends. They kept some livestock and foraged, trading with Beastfolk clans and avoiding outsiders- like any other community. His best friend was an avian Beastfolk from one of these clans, and they got up to trouble constantly when they were together, matched in intensity and curiosity. His friend- closer to a brother, really- always spoke about the outside world. However, in their area was a strange fixture. Some kind of rift, an entryway, ominous and wrong. Said to have been built long, long ago for an unknown purpose. Everyone avoided it. Everyone but him.
Wizard apprenticeship
- Speaks perfect elvish now. Not even a hint of an accent!
- Visited the Empyrean (Fae plane)
- Got his glasses
After leaving home out of frustration, he tumbled about the world for a little while, hitching rides in transport carriages and sleeping under the stars. Eventually, after a rough patch, he stumbled into the home of a retired adventurer, an elven wizard. There, he got an apprenticeship after telling his story, and the old man tried to help him with what he knew. Having a master mostly involved doing busywork and errands, but Alef was also taught some critical skills in the first few years, and was given many a piece of advice.

Skills & abilities
Chronal Shift
Starting at 2nd level, you can magically exert limited control over the flow of time around a creature. As a reaction, after you or a creature you can see within 30 feet of you makes an attack roll, an ability check, or a saving throw, you can force the creature to reroll. You make this decision after you see whether the roll succeeds or fails. The target must use the result of the second roll. You can use this ability twice, and you regain any expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Temporal Awareness
Add intelligence modifier to initiative rolls.
Despite their differing alignments, he deeply respects Astra's intelligence, and they work well as a team. They often have long cerebral discussions about magic, and trade stories from parts of history and the world, or even joke around-- especially when drunk enough. Alef considers Astra an ideal travel partner, and has after months of knowing him learned which questions and topics are best to avoid. Though not outwardly affectionate, Astra has become someone very important to him. Occasionally uses the nickname 'Aster', like the fall-blooming purple flower.
Though often overwhelmed by Brix's... Brixness, Alef is begrudgingly very fond of the half-orc and impressed by her strength. He occasionally uses her as the basis for what 'pro-social behaviour' looks like, since he struggles with it after becoming Ascian. He also hasn't seen a prosthetic arm like hers almost anywhere else, and thinks it's ingenious.
Alef has the sense that despite being near opposites, they are also fundamentally... similar. Somehow. They at the very least understand each others experiences. Tykulv is hard to dislike and easy to open up to, although his social charisma makes Alef feel somewhat clumsy around him. And he's pretty sure he'll be hearing everything he says to Tykulv repeated to him in a ballad one day...
It kind of hurts his neck to speak to her, but he can tell she's not to be underestimated. She also makes for a great person to ask for a second opinion on things, and he appreciates her down-to-earth attitude! Literally, down to earth...
This wyrm being one of only two he has ever known, Alef is intrigued by the figure and impressed by what he does know. Additionally, it's very hard not to be endeared by their mannerisms. They're like... A cat!
Comfort leaf bug demon! It comes up with a lot of sadistic suggestions through their telepathic link, but it's a relatively well-behaved and extremely cute familiar. Squeezes it like a stress toy.
