HISTORY

Meet Lan, a 16-year-old Asian girl who comes from a middle-class family. Her mother constantly verbally abuses her, and her father never comes to her defense. At school, she is bullied for being a hybrid child and stands out for her unique rectangle eyes, which only a few members of her family share. While some of her classmates admire her eyes from afar, the mean girls in her class resent her popularity and target her with pranks and thefts. Even her teachers treat her as either a class clown or a perfect candidate for unexpected oral tests. Through all her hardships, Lan finds solace in her art. One day, a cruel prank lands her in the ER. While there, she overhears the doctor saying that her poor physical health is due to her mental state. Overhearing the doctor's diagnosis, she realizes that she has less than two weeks to live. At first, Lan feels despair at all the things she wants to do but will never have the chance to accomplish. But then she meets a boy who has been her roommate and listening to her cries every single night. As her time draws near, the boy asks her a simple yet life-changing question: "If you are 'leaving' tomorrow, what's the last thing you want to do?" Though the boy disappears the very next day, Lan is left with a newfound appreciation for life, realizing that nothing else really matters when confronted with death. She finally understands the true meaning of living worry-free, and for the first time in years, she feels happy, at peace, and ready to face whatever time she has left.
