A cherry pie aficionado, Paul Kelly is a very kind, gentle mannered lawyer from South Carolina. Originally hired by Jeannie Jones to help with a copyright claim case the two quickly became friends, and he has very obvious feelings for her that she's painfully oblivious to. Prone to southern hospitality, Paul is welcoming and always willing to lend a hand whenever he can. Almost the polar opposite of Jeannie, he is much more reserved and often acts as her voice of reason alongside Suzanne Barlow. He is very passionate about his job, specializing in several areas of law such as intellectual property, contract disputes, business litigation, product liability, government contracts, and more. Also a fanatic for all things cowboy, he has an extensive knowledge of famous western movies and their actors, and is just as willing to talk anyone's ear off about them as he is law. Paul is very musically intelligent and knows how to play several instruments, most notably the piano oogie-boogie style. Being 'very soft around the edges', as described by his friends and co-workers, Paul is compassionate (rather entertaining when the southern accent comes out) and an all around good person to have in and out of court. Though he has a habit of overthinking minute details at times albeit because of his job, it causes him to have a rather hard time stepping out of his comfort zone. It can take a lot of convincing and coaxing to get him to do something outlandish especially if he's had enough time to think of every which way it could go wrong, though he's surprisingly quiet about it and very willing to hear the other party out.
Paul is very polite and reserved, often mistaken as shy by more outgoing personalities. He is formal with strangers but has a warm presence which people find comforting. As someone who is very slow to anger he prides himself on being patient and understanding, though he knows his boundaries very well and will not stand to be pushed around. When confronted or startled Paul occasionally stutters when struggling to find words, though more often than not he's able to hone it back in. Most noteably when Paul is very angry or excited, his southern accent and slang tend to slip out. As a lawyer, his vocabulary is very refined and though he does his best to mask his accent in formal settings, it always ends up shining through a little bit. The more comfortable he is around people the more it tends to come out, especially if it's family. Paul is very timid and humble to a fault. Though he isn't self deprecating in any way, he often disregards himself and his achievements in favor of his friends without realizing.
The way to Paul's heart is his stomach, and as a particularly tall man he has a large appetite. He is not picky by any means and is willing to eat or try just about anything. To avoid being rude at restaurants, Jeannie and Sue have discovered they can simply put anything they aren't a fan of on his plate. Ironically enough, he has no clue how to cook. Unlike with food, Paul isn't very adventureous and can get intimidated going outside of his comfort zone. At times he needs a little bit of an extra push to try something he wouldn't do normally, but tends to cave fairly easily around his friends.
