Beau was born an alley cat within a clower known as the "Street Prowlers".  The clowder was well known amongst other cats in the area, they roamed the streets of Paris most of the time, claiming territories and fighting off other cats.  They were known to be extremely territorial and aggressive.  (The Street Prowlers were a large group of Rogue cats who had left / were exiled from other clowers or two-legged dens.)  

Although Beau didn't like this life style, he had ways longed for a softer life inside of a cozy den.  He was jealous of the kittypets who received free food and affection from their humans.  He was tired of having to constantly fight, hunt and search for food out on the streets, so one day he decided to leave.  He had managed to find a human late at night, playing "nice kitty" in order to get the human to take him back to their den.  To his surprise it worked, the human took him in, giving him a collar and a cute hat.  It was common for him to sit up on a balcony at night, watching over the streets.  Although he rarely left the property. 

This did not settle well with the Street Prowlers.  They despised that one of their own would willingly turn to a soft life like this.  It was often that they would lurk around Beau's new territory, as if waiting for him to jump down from his pearch so they could attack.  They felt betrayed by his disappearance.  

Thus creating a rival between Beau and the Street Prowlers.
