CW: mentions of Death, Gore, Burning flesh

Species: Weeping Wisp (unique evolved species of the Wisp)
Age: unknown

Genders: it/they/he

somewhat apathetic (in the process of learning human emotions), numb to pain, cries easily (its tears catch fire, leaving trails of ash on his face), afraid of water

will catch fire as a form of self-defense, this does cause his flesh to burn, however he has extremely fast regenerative properties, so it doesn't always appear that his skin is burning beneath the flames.

story: (WIP)

Once they were just a wisp, a small fox spirit engulfed in flames, luring the unwary hunter to their deaths. Other monsters of the marsh would feast upon the fallen flesh and the wisps would feast upon the departing soul. Among the wisps of the marshland, Wisp was the strongest and smartest. It excelled at luring the hunters to the area boss, reaping the rewards when the hunter fell. As the wisps were among the weakest of monsters, hunters had no fear of them. However, the area soon came under the control of a powerful hunter, who was able to defeat the area bosses. This hunter appeared to have claimed the territory as his own, as no other humans seemed to venture into the marshes.

While the other wisps continued to attempt to lure this hunter into the other traps of the area map, Wisp decided to observe the hunter. Feeling both envy and respect towards the hunter's strength. Wisp noticed that this hunter was odd. The hunter did not fear the approach of the wisps and would even sleep exposed to the sunlight that would beam down into the map after a boss fell. Wisp eventually stopped trying to hide its presence when they realized the hunter knew they were following. Wisp stuck close to the hunter whenever they visited the marsh, hoping they might somehow learn to become just as powerful as the hunter.

This extended for some time until the marsh shifted. The marsh had always been a unique zone, as the bosses that formed there changed often, allowing the hunters to gather a multitude of rare and varied resources. But the shift was sudden, the hunter had just felled a boss when it happened. A powerful boss never before seen formed. The hunter immediately engaged in battle but found himself to be losing. Wisp watched as the hunter stumbled. Torn between its instinct to consume the hunter's soul, and its reverence in the hunter's strength. In this attachment Wisp had never felt before.

As the boss was about to land a killing blow, Wisp rushed out to block it. Imploding its core to release powerful flames that consumed the boss. Defying its very nature to save the human it should desire to prey upon. With its core gone, Wisp became ash with the monster. Leaving only the stunned hunter behind.

After being consumed by darkness, Wisp found itself once more in the boss arena of the marsh. but the hunter and boss were gone. It realized as it tired to leave the arena that it was trapped. Wisp wanted to find the hunter but couldn't. As it stumbled through the arena, it eventually realized its body had changed. Wisp felt ecstatic when it realized it resembled a human, maybe it could a just like that hunter. They wanted the hunter to see this change. So unable to leave, Wisp waited for the hunter to arrive.

But the hunter never came. This new form brought many strange sensations to Wisp, one was tears. Which fell constantly as it saw that many hunters visited the marsh, but its hunter, who guarded the resources of this place for himself, was not among them. With these tears, Wisp's body would be lit brightly by ghost flames, preventing the trespassing hunters from causing Wisp harm.

As Wisp waited, it was truly oblivious how its sacrifice had affected the hunter, Damien. The hunter that ventured into this hellish place to protect his family on earth, the amount of pain and suffering the hunter had gone through when this hell like plane intersected with the earth. Who let his guard down against a weak monster that followed him around like a stray puppy. Never expecting a monster of all things to protect him in such a way, not after all the devastation the monsters caused on earth. The sacrifice of the little wisp left him shocked and depressed to the point he was unwilling to return to the marsh zone.

Eventually a friend of the hunter heard a rumor of the unique boss that had become the new boss of the marsh. The boss bearing a human shape with fox features, and burning with the same flames as the weak wisps. He had heard the tell of his friends encounter with the wisp that saved his life.
