Rufus

Rufus lives in a world where casting a spell comes at a price. The caster must accept a curse on themselves, or a willing person might take the curse for them. Rufus takes curses on behalf of the prince, and is his bodyguard.

Minor spells cause curses with minor affects. Rufus dislikes the color green, so one curse turned his hair green. One curse blinded him in his right eye. And the curse which begins our story caused Rufus to be unable to recognize anyone. Ever.

Rufus can no longer recgonize friend from foe. Every time he sees a person, it is like meeting them for the first time. He is utterly useless to the prince, because he can't protect someone he wouldn't know in a crowd. As a result, Rufus is given a short amount of time to get his curse removed, or he will be fired. Meanwhile, the prince is sent into hiding. 

The king hires a fugitive named Neeka to help Rufus break his curse. Over time, Rufus learns to lower his gaze and use voices to recognize who people are.
