Personailty

Introvert Extrovert
Thinking Feeling
Sensing Intuition
Judging Perceiving

Renée has never exactly been one for showy personas or playing the charismatic, silver-tongued rogue. Falling into a life of crime was not because of a tragic backstory or because he had no other options, it was just a job that suited his skills. He's not particularly attached to any one organization, reliable paydays or even his exact job- he'd be happy with any thief-adjacent profession and just happens to work as a smuggler for the time being. There is a melancholic cloud hanging over him lately, a growing paranoia and a haunting grief that infects everything that he does. He needs help, he needs the truth, he- he's not sure what he needs.

Story

[Pre-history to be added]

During his escapades in espionage and stealing important documents for a price, Renée accidentally fell into contact with an incredibly notorious group of "mercenaries". They were something more akin to a mafia- somehow managing to constantly skirt the line between outright crime and business ventures, there never being enough proof to truly get any of its members in trouble. Renée only had the briefest of interactions with the group...but it was enough for him to be involved in a little mix-up. His address got mixed up with one of the group's members and, against either of their better judgment, the two continued to keep in contact via letters. Neither of them had ever even laid eyes upon the other, but they became so heavily invested in this estranged relationship.

By the time that Renée and his penpal, Lethe, realized the extent of their developing feelings...it was even more obvious that this was a dangerous game they were playing. Lethe was engaged to the boss' son, something she had gotten herself tied up in before she knew the inner workings of the group and their crimes. For a long while she turned a blind eye to it and Renée helped with that- after all, he'd committed his fair share of less-than-legal proceedings. But the harder they fell for one another, the more they began to wonder if there was a way they could both escape that kind of life for good. Or at least, this is how Renée had come to interpret their years-long affair.

When the mercenary group planned to raid a notoriously dangerous tomb that doubled as a dungeon, Renée hurried there as quickly as he could. His intention was to spirit Lethe away in the inevitable chaos- with the thought that the group and her fiance would assume she died there and the two of them could disappear together. Whatever happened to Renee that day...he can't remember now. He awoke among bodies of the group, the ruins of the dungeon surrounding him and a horrific wound across his face that had nearly killed him already. It became clear from his other wounds that during some sort of scuffle, Renée received head trauma so severe that it has erased all memory of what happened within the dungeon. He has no idea what happened to him, to Lethe, to anyone that had been there. Most days he is torn over what to believe; that Lethe was one of those bodies and he would never know for sure...or that she set him up upon having second thoughts about their affair.

He didn't know how to go about finding the truth at first, but now that he's gotten word of another survivor of this tragedy, who is also desparately trying to find out what happened that day...well, Renée has decided this might be the only way that either of them will get their closure.

Relationships

Lethe

Renée's ex-lover. He's accepted that the likelihood of her surviving too is much too low to even entertain the hope of. For now, he just wants to know the truth of what happened and then allow himself to grieve her loss fully
