Profile
Silas Matellan
Where Even Death Cannot Go
Immovable Defiance of the Inevitable
Quite possibly one of the strangest people around, Dr. Silas isn't exactly what people think of when they think of a particularly adept physician. Mostly skeletal and rather out of touch with the present day, he's quite obviously a piece of a past that the rest of the world has long since moved on from. However, that doesn't make his skills rusty or obsolete. After all, anyone at any time could require his assistance - and he's always willing to help, even if his patients find it odd to be tended to by one of the undead.
Notes
- Dr. Silas has lived as an undead for 170 years, and took 150 years after his death to make it back to the land of the living.
- While he does have the gaze of the Echelon of Continuity Aeternus, he is not gifted with their power and is not a Primus of Continuity. He instead has some minor magical gifts from the Echelon of Memory Reminia, but they were merely part of being an undead and does not have the direct favour of any Echelon.
- His one good eye is prone to falling out of its socket from time to time, and is the only eye that can actually see anything. His skeletal eye can only sense extremely blurry light and colour. The one good eye is also not exactly his - instead, it is a magical gift from the Echelon of Memory that came with his successful reanimation.
- Dr. Silas has fairly good recall and can remember quite a lot about his first life. However, there are patches that he cannot retrieve, and nothing in the 150 year period of being dead is known to him.
- Being undead, there is no way to truly harm or kill him except for a Holy Blade. He is also no longer capable of feeling pain, though he can feel pressure when any normal weapon is used against him. That being said, he doesn't exactly like having to pull knives out of his eyesockets and would really prefer not having to spend an hour trying to dislodge something from his bones.

The Tireless Healer
In his first life, Silas worked as a doctor who worked tirelessly and would push himself to do his best by anyone who sought out his care. He quickly earned himself the title of "death-defying" as he had a good success rate with patients who were considered too-far-gone by other medical professionals, though this status and more people seeking him out caused him to push himself further and further until his body could not handle it anymore. Often overworked and exhausted from travelling to see patients that couldn't come to him, he accidentally overdosed on his own medicine and passed from respiratory arrest in his home office.
Defiance of the Inevitable
Having worked with many patients on the brink of death before, Silas had observed that many of them who did indeed pass often waited until their family were able to come see them. As such, he carried the conclusion that intentionally prolonging or even denying death was a possible feat and set to test it out himself after death. Instead of moving on to the afterlife, he pushed backwards against the everlasting tide, slowly making progress until he could cross back over into the plane of the living. Unbeknownst to him at the time, this process had taken him 150 years to complete, and he returned right as the Rift War was coming to its end.
Silas returned to his estate and with the help of a body he temporarily possessed, dug up his own grave and retrieved his body. After successfully reoccupying his body, he scratched out the date of his death from his tombstone and took nothing but a single lantern from his already-ransacked estate as he set out on his travels. He continued to put his medical skills to good use during the final 20 years of the Rift War, wandering around and assisting those who would allow him to despite his odd looks and demeanour. Once the war came to an end and the Everlight grew, he would occasionally travel to the city, though never staying for too long.
Keeper of the Past
Dr. Silas never received the direct favour of any of the Echelons, nor does he understand it or the obsession the people of the Everlight have with them. Yet, many who do know him seem to think he has the favourable gaze of Aeternus, the Echelon of Continuity and will often praise Aeternus for granting him a second life - much to his confusion and lack of understanding.
His estate, while entirely ransacked and left to ruin in the many years after his death, has become something of an urban legend and often spoken of in ghost stories. It is quite the hotspot for daring young people to visit in the hopes of seeing his dug up grave and the scratched off headstone. Some people also believe it's haunted - which isn't too far off from the truth should Silas feel nostalgic and decide to visit his former home.
