Viv nicknamed them "Bolts". The two are basically inseparable, and The Mechanic will rarely ever lets go of Viv's robes, unless they absolutely have to.
They were created by Viv using spare parts of machinery and scrap to keep him company. The Mechanic is the first ever known case of a slugcat made entirely mechanically. Despite their mechanical nature, they are capable of thinking and feeling as if they were alive. However, most of the time they don't seem to show much emotion and simply stay by Viv's side.
The Mechanic is capable of making repairs to even the most complex of machinery. This includes an Iterator's superstructure. They often use this ability to help make repairs to Viv when something goes wrong or gets damaged by the local Scavenger population.
