Profile
Summary
Lagunas are generally timid and graceful creatures that roam the expanse of ocean on Lyth. They have adapted to both fresh and saltwater, but seem to prefer fresh. They swim calmly like they're floating and gently flutter their fins every few moments; despite this, they can make a getaway in a tense situation. Fortunately, they're rarely preyed upon, and if they are threatened by their environment, they will grow a hard shell on their body and spines on their tail.
✦ Body
Lagunas are almost four feet when upright, neck extended, tail curled. They can sometimes grow beyond that size, but generally stay within that range or smaller. Their bodies change density depending on what kind of environment they're in. Their skin is actually very soft to the touch and don’t dehydrate easily even when on land due to the liquid in their neck sacs.
✦ Sensors
Lagunas sensors are on the top of their heads. They come in a few variations. They detect vibrations and frequencies underwater that give them more information about their environment.
✦ Eyes
They have beady little eyes that give them a cute appearance! However, they aren’t just for looks; their eyes actually allow them to see underwater, even through the murkiest parts of the ocean.
✦ Neck Sac
Lagunas have a sac on their neck that holds water but carbonates it over time, causing it to sparkle. When released, the carbonated water substance can create a thick smog around them that tickles to the touch, but when breathed in, can be extremely painful and life-threatening. Lagunas generally only release the carbonated substance when they feel threatened.
✦ Fins
Their wing-shaped fins are generally used for propelling themselves forward, but also allow them to hold objects. At the first bend of their wings is where their little fingers are located; they tend to keep them folded away and hidden when swimming.
✦ Tail
Lagunas have long tails that naturally curl in resting position. They resemble seahorses' tails.
Variants
✦ Shecean
For those who live in more dangerous waters, their carbonated sacs may not be enough. Therefore, their sacs become hidden away inside their chest, and they develop extra flippers for speed. Sheceans also develop shell-like exteriors around their sensors, and may even encase their entire body in one. They seem to prefer saltwater and may grow to be large enough for other Lythians to ride — with permission, of course!
Core Features
- Lagunas have a smooth body texture that can be slightly slimy to the touch.
- They have at least two sensors atop their skulls.
- They all have a translucent neck sac filled with carbonated water.
- Laguna fins resemble wings, with retractable fingers located at the first bend.
- Their tails rest in a curled position.
✧ Extra Suggestions
- small, beady eyes
- objects in neck sac
- shell with flipper holes
✦ Shecean
- Shecean sensors are encased in shells.
- Their neck sacs are smaller and hidden inside their chests.
- They have two or more sets of flippers, with retractable claws at their tips.
- Sheceans have large, finlike tails that fan out behind them.
✧ Extra Suggestions
- shell-like growths on body
- large eyes
- gills to expel carbonated water
Baby Information
During early childhood, Lagunas actually very-closely resemble baby seahorses! One distinct difference, of course, is the presence of their neck sac. As babies, their neck sacs tend to be large in comparison to their body; most have neck sacs that encase half their body sans tail or more. Baby Lagunas are already able to perform the carbonation process, but the results are less dangerous, more prone to causing coughing fits than actually endangering lives.
✦ Baby Features
- They look like seahorses in terms of body shape.
- Their neck sacs encase at least half of their body.
- Their fins are small and underdeveloped at this stage.
- Baby Lagunas already have long, curled tails.
✧ Extra Suggestions
- beady eyes appear larger
- small or no sensors
Origin Story & Quest
Vergiftin
Lagunas were of the first residents of the realm of Reenah. Their stories speak of giant creatures that inhabited the watery realm — monsters who slowly disappeared over time; perhaps gone to other realms, unseen depths, or simply evolved into other creatures. Their poison sacs served to defend them from such creatures of the past, and though their current neighbors are much friendlier, Lagunas still retain their defensive qualities… just in case.
Lagunas have the unique ability to carbonize water with a process that converts it into a dangerous poison smog. Young Lagunas are capable of this, but the smog is less toxic, and rarely lethal.
How does your Laguna learn the carbonation process as they grow? Are they a professional right away, or do they struggle with controlling the smog? Please portray your Laguna using their baby design or an adolescent design that’s not quite their adult form yet.
