I. | timid, skittish, and ungrounded.

Iris's species, the Birds of Time, live in isolation, which results in a lonely lifestyle. Without anyone to rely on, and in the face of a dangerous world, Iris became acquainted with the crueler truths of this world. She quickly retreated into a survivalist mindset—never staying in one place too long, being cautious with whom she opened her heart to, and being afraid of her own shadow. Certainly, she became the embodiment of flight.—always on the run, and never, never home.

II. | hesitant growth, healing, and change.

Meeting Marigold ("Mari") gave her a taste of her first real sense of home and security. Although she could not suppress the visceral instinct to run, she, strangely, time and time again, returned as a visitor to the elf's home, often in the form of a crow. After an accident requires her to solicit help from the icy elf, she finally learns what it means to stop running—and how beautiful it is to live, and not to survive.

III. | love, hope, and what it means to blossom.

Mari & Iris's relationship eventually progresses to one of mutual respect and trust. Alongside Mari, Iris has become so much more than "a bird on the run". Surprisingly, living without an all-consuming, crushing fear leads one to become rather happy. In her best state, Iris is laid back, relaxed, and a generally happy individual. She trusts more easily, and she's less guarded, for better or for worse, as she's able to place more faith into others. Energetic & persistent, she is a stark contrast (and the perfect complement) to the blunt & almost hostile Mari.

• More on her gender: As one who wasn't raised with any concept of gender (or identity for the matter), Iris feels as if she can never be truly synonymous with being a 'real girl'. However, she enjoys presenting femininely & indulging in the idea of being a girl, hence, demigirl!
• Although Iris has learned how to hunker down and stay tethered to one place, she still sometimes yearns to just. Get out there. It's kind of like a "you can take a man out of the woods, but you can't take the woods out of the man" thing.
