Living above surface is not easy, but Haru feels little connection to his life below the surface. He is currently working as a fashion designer on the island where he first washed up after escaping his previous home due to conflicts in the family.
Despite his existence as merfolk, the woman who picked him up from where he'd washed ashore did not seem shocked upon seeing his appearance, and advised him on what to do. He was soon adopted into the storied Rurikawa family, who seem to have history with merfolk.
In the current day, he works as a stylist, going back to the ocean every month to stay healthy. His coworkers seemed to have accepted his quirks without questioning, which is consolement. That is, until Aoi is hired and becomes part of the same team as him; she seems instantly to feel that something is up.

Haru is a nonconfrontative person; he tends to mesh with people well because of his approachable personality. He's quite a hit with women and especially children. His siblings also love him.
He's very protective of those he cares about, and the only time you will risk catching him actually angry will have to do with them. He also tends to put others' needs before his own, even to ridiculous degrees. Overall, he's extremely pleasant to be around, but lacks backbone and confidence in himself.
His identity as merfolk has also put a hamper on his romantic prospects; he doesn't risk anything with anyone, just in case they may find out. Will he be able to deny himself that forever?
Because of his merfolk powers, he has to keep his emotions in control or he risks revealing one of those traits; that his hair changes color with strong emotions. This leads him to always be distant around anyone that isn't family.

The new hire from the mainland that Haru is asked to assist in getting to know the department better. To put it mildly, he quite fancies her, but knows there's nothing to be gained down that road.
Aoi seems suspicious of him from the get-go; she questions things that his coworkers just let slide.

Though Haru doesn't consider her as such, she is his adoptive mother. He just calls her "mom". She is also the woman who located him on the beach the day he washed ashore almost 17 years prior.
Her family and her children all know about merfolk. It is something that is carried on by the family. However, in the past generation, there have been no merfolk near the island, making Haru's arrival a shock.
- The majority of Haru's wardrobe is built around one thing: practicality in case of a merfolk-related emergency. When he transforms, anything he wears below the belt is, well, destroyed. So he wears only slip-on shoes, tends to go without socks, and wears loose pants or skirts. He also has a diver's watch and waterproof bags+phone
- He always wears a hat to hide his hair changing color with emotions. He tries to control them but the hat is a failsafe.
- As merfolk, he has a long, bluish-grey tail that also changes color with his mood. He grows two long strands of hair, and fins sprout from his arms, gills on his neck, and appendages where his ears are. The coral-shaped scarring on the chest is there in both merfolk and human forms.
