His job is to lead mortals to the cardinal sin of envy by establishing a friendship with someone, taking the form of the idealized person they would feel most jealous of, and seducing their partner. The jealousy mortals feel when they see him is what fuels all of his magical energy, and sustains his life. Home in hell, Lilin shares his home with another demon, named Markell. He typically calls him Mar, or Mar Mar, even, on the happiest of days. He is aware that Markell loves him, but is too afraid of emotional honesty or intimacy to pursue a relationship with him. They enjoy a casual friendship, and Lilin depends on Markell for practical things, like housekeeping and reporting his work results to the Hell Government. Lilin's love of teasing leads him to enjoy his conflicts with the angel Macedon. He enjoys pretending he will see things the virtuous way, then showing the angel a sinful persona. His game with Macedon frustrates and tempts the angel until he eventually retreats back to Heaven to try again another day.
