Abilities

Craftsmanship; Rubaiyat’s most noteworthy trait is his ability to craft weapons. Smithing is more of a skill, or profession, than an actual “ability” in most cases, but for Rubaiyat there is something of an exception. He is capable of making almost any weapon with pinpoint precision after holding it just once, and often improves upon designs that were previously thought to be perfected. His prowess with turning almost any material into some sort of weapon is nearly unmatched, even though he only began working publicly recently.

Imbue; Laying curses on specific people, places, or objects is a common ability among hellions, most of them are capable of it. However, being able to actually imbue a curse into the very existence of something is not. Those possessing an ability to imbue something with a specific trait are often fearsome enemies, who are able to change the “capability” of something with a single touch. Rubaiyat possesses this power, and has proven able to imbue specified traits, curses, and even blessings into his weapons.

Hellfire; While being able to summon hellfire is another rather basic ability of the hellions, the ability to fully manipulate the flames is somewhat more rare, though not nearly enough for it to be considered a unique attribute. While hellfire itself makes an incredible offensive capability, Rubaiyat uses his manipulation chiefly to smith his weapons. He’s yet to bother using it in a fight.

About

As with most of the princes, the story begins with the Devil meeting their mother. In Rubaiyat’s case, the one in the role of “mother” was a second father by the name of Aisila. He was small in stature, perhaps almost dainty, but possessed a wicked viciousness to him that enticed the Devil thoroughly. He would have kept him as a lover for some time if he could, but Aisila departed once he fell pregnant, as that was all he’d desired.

Aisila, and Rubaiyat after him, hailed from one of the seventy-two great bloodlines of Hell; Dantalion. Their bloodline was a violent one, known for their love of war and bloodshed. Each of them possessed an alluring nature that only made their cruelty more enchanting, and Aisila was arguably the loveliest of them all.

Rubaiyat was never a particularly rambunctious child. He was observant and curious, often in his father’s arms and listening at length to conversations he was far too young to understand. As he grew, he came to possess a surprisingly amicable personality for the family he came from.

Weapons fascinated him as a child. Something as mundane as a blacksmith, this was not a profession often taken by those of Dantalion’s bloodline. And considering that the other half of his blood was the Devil’s, it startled much of the family. Yet… they were supportive. Aunts would bring home swords from the battlefields, uncles presented him with instruments of torture, cousins snuck him guns and needles and explosives from the mortal plane. His father indulged his long rambling explanations and tireless nights banging away at his metals.

The announcement of the Obitinuit Principatum changed very little in Rubaiyat’s life. Members of the family poked and prodded at him about it, but his father laughed them all off as he toiled away with his work. Rubaiyat never possessed any sort of ambition like that, nor indeed with Aisila. He had only ever wanted a child, and a child by the Devil seemed a good a way to get one as any.

One day, quite suddenly, Rubaiyat announced his intention to join the Obitinuit. The throne meant nothing to him, but the chance to grow close to the future king and his court, that was something else. In all his time toiling and crafting, Rubaiyat had become a master of his art. His weapons had reached a level that those ten times his age had yet to achieve.

Those weapons, he wanted to see them in the hands of those who understood their value. Who would treat them as Rubaiyat himself did.

The fact one of Dantalion’s household was a child of the Devil was no secret, but the fact that child had become a prince took some time to spread. Perhaps it was Rubaiyat’s personality. When the name Dantalion was spoken, a certain image came to mind, and Rubaiyat did not fit it. Indeed, most siblings who met him seemed thrown by his curiosity and friendliness.

But it was not as if he was without the Dantalion family viciousness. He played off that imbalance, that off-kilter feeling people got when he wasn’t who they expected, and used it to his advantage. Rubaiyat’s rumored ruthlessness was offset by his personality again, and so the cycle continued with each new prince he met.

At first it was just a matter of rising in rank, but once he reached near the 250th place, Rubaiyat’s tactics shifted. He avoided fights, never allowing them to be initiated, and instead spent a great deal of time studying those princes he had chosen to target specifically. Long stretches of time went by when he fell dormant, secluding himself to toil away on a new creation. A weapon crafted specifically for his next opponent.

Each instrument he constructed was unique. Imbued with curses, with seals, with poisons, blessings, promises, lies, truths, illusions– Every one meant for one specific person, and at the end of its use, left to be admired for the trophy it was. When his victories became a pattern, and he steadily rose towards the 200th place, the other princes became wary.

Several attempted to approach him and take his head for themselves before he had a chance to target them, but again and again Rubaiyat slipped away. He never lost a fight, but that was merely because any battle he chose to initiate, he was sure to win.

Rubaiyat was not entirely focused on combat. As he continued to rise in the ranks of the Obitinuit, the amount of attention he received increased. Many siblings feared him, but a great deal of them also admired his craftsmanship. Slowly, he began to sew the seeds he needed to build a network of those who would remember his name and face, want his support in the future, and lead him to a place in the royal court.

Alliances, though, were not something he indulged in. Since the king would not be known until the very moment he took the throne, it was best not to play favorites.

Still, in recent times, he has become attached to one of his elder brothers. The 36th Prince, Ziazel.
