Profile

Some aspects of this profile are a WIP. Namely her wardrobe, her relationships, and little chunks of her backstory. She's in an active roleplay right now and some stuff isn't able to be elaborated upon yet. Also potential TWs for vague references to cult worship for her backstory section.
It is possible to carry life and death in the same sentence. In the same body. It is possible to carry love and pain.

A dragon-fearing doctor with a permanent chip on her shoulder.

Introduction

guinevere is...

  • antisocial, abrasive, and any other word you could find that fit those parameters
  • absolutely terrified of dragons, with no interest to warm up to them
  • a very talented healer who dislikes talking about how exactly she learned medicine

She doesn't talk about where she's from. The only thing she wants to be expected of her has nothing to do with socializing—she wants to be a doctor, nothing else, exchanging treatment for shelter and protection. It's a shame life doesn't give her a break.

Story

early life - teenage years

You were destined to be our offering, Guinevere.

The village Guinevere was born in was extremely remote. The location was isolated by dangerous terrain, which limited travel in and out of the area to almost none, and on top of that, there was a crazy dragon population. The lack of people around, barring the one village, made it easy for them to multiply, and after a couple generations, the region was practically overrun.

Due to their isolation and their disadvantage when it came to dragons, the people of Guinevere's village grew to worship them in an attempt to appease them. They forgot the common gods and instead pleaded with the dragons for safety, to be spared, and to be able to keep enough of their crops and livestock to get by. This eventually spiraled down into the village becoming a cult of sorts, treating the dragons like tyrannical idols, and as such, they began to make willing sacrifices to the dragons to keep their attention away from more precious things.

Guinevere was born as the only child in the village to have red hair. This was considered an omen by the villagers, and even by her parents, who were beside themselves to have created the 'ultimate gift' to the dragons. A child born with hair of dragon fire seemed almost something of prophecy to them. As such, Guinevere grew up pampered and praised. She wouldn't be sacrificed as a child—no, once she came of age, they would hold a ceremony.

Guin was aware of her fate from the beginning. Other children were jealous, conditioned to believe that Guinevere was lucky. She didn't feel that way. Despite her parents' (and the entire village's, really) efforts to make her proud and compliant, she could never shake the dread that settled on her shoulders. She spent most of her childhood being taken care of and kept sheltered and isolated from any 'troublesome' things.

A dagger was made in her honor, ornate and beautiful and golden, its hilt a carved dragon with the blade coming from its 'mouth.' Intricate details mimicking dragon flame were carved along the blade, as well as a slightly wavy edge, giving it the appearance of a dragon spewing fire made into a weapon. Given Guinevere's existence was seen as the greatest boon the village had ever received from the heavens, and they viewed her as a catalyst for their salvation, they went all out.

She took great joy in taking it when she finally made it out. Laying claim to something crafted to kill her—she still carries it, although not openly, just so people don't ask questions. She does fight with it (rarely) but its primary purpose is just to serve as a reminder that she made it. She lived.

. . .

the escape

I'd offer my services, if you'll have me. In exchange for protection from those... those dragons.

The actual details of Guinevere's escape, such as how and when it happened, are intentionally left out. That's not something I want to be public knowledge yet LOL so anyway, Guinevere did escape the village, even if it wasn't in the way she'd have liked to. She was either incredibly lucky or she just happened to pick a good time—but she managed to stumble her way through the dangerous environment around her village. The crumbling cliffs and soft, sinking mud, and the like.

She spent several months after her departure living off the land. Her village was actually on mainland Europe, not some island, so she did have the benefit of being able to put more distance between herself and her "home" on foot without being interrupted by sea.

During her time alone, to keep herself sane, she picked up hobbies, though they were more for survival than for fun. She learned to mend her wounds, her broken bones and gashes from slipping on rocks during storms, and learned to forage. It was a horrific trial-and-error process of learning different herbs. She was familiar with some, but others were new, and she would experiment on herself. She did have some near death experiences. Plot armor.

Eventually, she met some hunters. They'd been transporting a couple dragons to be sold at a market. Initially she'd been hesitant to approach, but they killed the things she feared most, the things she'd nearly been killed for, and she needed to find somewhere to go that wasn't just more wilderness. She managed to convince them to take her on as a healer, given her skill in medicine, and she'd been lucky—they were in plenty need of one.

From that point on, Guinevere worked as a standoffish and cold medic for various dragon hunter outposts. She made it clear she did not socialize and had no interest in befriending, let alone fraternizing with, any of them. She maintained a very antisocial attitude to keep people away and to keep herself comfortable.

. . .

current events

If you wanted me to be eager to keep you all alive, 'twas not the way to go about this.

Guinevere happily spent the next couple years bouncing back and forth between hunter camps and treating various wounds. She stayed within the same general region she grew familiar with during the first months she spent as a rotating doctor, learning the people at the outposts she frequented and even befriending someone, one person, who also threw their lot in with the dragon killers—a man named Perseus, or Vasile Ruzicka. He was her first real friend ever. Not just since she escaped her village. Ever.

They rarely see each other despite their closeness. Communication is also minimal, with the occasional letter coming in addressed to each other. It's difficult when both of them travel, Percy more so than Guinevere, given Percy's job as a courier for the hunters.

Unfortunately, Guinevere's peace would not last forever. One random day, the outpost she was stationed at was attacked, and she was essentially kidnapped by the dragon riders behind it. They claimed they needed a healer for their group, and treated her like cargo to be traded and claimed, and not a person.

She hated them. But she was sensible. She'd known better at the time, that conflict or trying to run yet again from a horrible situation she was stuck in would not end well. Not with those dragons of theirs. So Guinevere tolerated it, and later on, she would be glad she did—those three riders would end up being plenty decent to hang around.

will wear

  • long skirts or dresses
  • soft materials (cotton, linen, some wool)
  • minimal jewelry (such as her circlet)

won't wear

  • pants, unless partially covered by a long tunic or skirt
  • lots of jewelry

design notes

  • she wears her circlet a lot, but not necessarily 24/7. it's fine to draw her without it (or if someone draws her and forgets)
  • if i never add a reference for how her dress looks without the fur-lined capelet, it's just a basic square neckline, long sleeves that are snug to her arms and tucked into the navy arm warmers, & it's a bit low cut (lil cleavage action) and maybe a little lace detail, but not a lot of frill
  • colors don't have to be exact. but she's very pale, and her eyes are a very light faded blue (she needs brown contacts severely), and her hair is more on the ginger/orange (?) side of red than actual bright red
  • the carousel is more for loose inspiration, or to get a vague idea of the things she would enjoy or willingly wear... she likes flower embroidery and honestly i might tweak her design to feature some, maybe things she did while bored with no patients to tend to
  • a big fan of capelets, cloaks, and shawls... generally prefers loose fitting and warm clothes for her day to day, unless a special circumstance had her in something fitted to her form, like armor. but that'd be very rare
  • her hair is usually in THREE (!!!) braids... two smaller/shorter ones that rest on her shoulders, and then a large, thick one that goes down her back and stops at around her lower thigh/just above her knee. her hair is very long and the longest pieces reach knee length, and the shorter strands (such as the ones in the shorter braids up top) go to about her mid-bicep. so it's roughly the same lengths loose as it is braided, but a little longer
  • she does vary hairstyles at times. she's known to wrap her big braid up into a massive coil and will pin the small braids back if she's really working, but she generally enjoys wearing it down. plus she's not a fighter so she doesn't have to consider practicality as much

Appearance

height 5'7

body type theatrical romantic (hourglass)

face shape oval?

facial features

Very pale with a near-constant cold flush to her cheeks, nose, and ears. She has full pink lips and a slightly upturned (but mostly straight) nose. Generally looks worried by everything... like RBF but with a concerned twist. Lots of freckles. So many freckles. They're very prominent and are usually only made more so by her flushed face.

scars

She has faint scars. Some small, some large, but they're all faded. They were generally earned during the time period she spent in the wilderness, cutting herself on dangerous terrain while moving around, or getting into scuffles with predators (which she mostly avoided by learning to hide and mask her scent). Not very prominent.

Wardrobe

Primary outfit

comfort
worth

Her primary outfit. Probably what she'll be wearing in 99% of her art if I ever draw her more. Which I want to. Nothing special to say other than the hem of the skirt is tattered because she's used it when she didn't have any proper gauze/linen on hand to cover wounds.

(PLACEHOLDER) nightwear

comfort
worth

(image quality sucks and it's just temporary until i draw her in a nightgown) She has a nice dress she wears when sleeping, and sometimes during downtime if the weather is nice. It's one of her nicer dresses, even if it's meant for sleep. She looks good in everything. I'm in love with her

(PLACEHOLDER) alternate

comfort
worth

(also temporary image until i get her in her actual design) Not much to say about this one... I plan for her to have an outfit similar to her main outfit, but with different colors (might lean earthy, like the placeholder?) but it's basically just a little more detailed and a little newer, something she gets to replace her current dress down the line.

Aesthetic

He's earned my affection, for better or for worse. He is still a fool, though.

Guinevere hated Faolan initially and was more than justified for it. However, over time, she grew to begrudgingly respect him and his leadership—especially given how Turid and Saoirse are. She can't pinpoint when her thoughts started to drift into romantic territories

first meeting

To summarize it very shortly (and plainly), Guinevere was kidnapped by the three: Saoirse, Turid, and Faolan. She had been working as a medic for dragon hunters because it was where she happened to fall into, and she held no love for hunters, but she'd still been terrified—especially since she'd essentially been "stolen" from the outpost during an ambush. Turid, Saoirse, and Faolan are simply treasure hunters and direly needed a healer due to Faolan receiving a life-threatening injury in a prior fight, so their actions had been out of desperation and they had full intentions of treating Guinevere fairly during her time with them, but she still feared and hated them.

She treated Faolan out of pure obligation, because although they reassured her that no harm would come to her, they didn't exactly meet under amicable circumstances—she had no reason to take them for their word even if they had somehow approached her for treatment without conflict. She hated him because he was their supposed "leader" and therefore the most at fault. He hated her as well, although she had no idea what for. That didn't help her own feelings on the matter, either.

  • faolan and guinevere met under horrible circumstances, which didn't start their relationship in a good light
  • guin's lack of professionalism showed in her obvious disregard for his life—it was clear she only helped him because she was forced to, and this set a precedent for the coming weeks she would be traveling with them

finding common ground

Guinevere's relationship with Faolan improving actually had little to do with communicating with Faolan directly. In the following weeks after her capture, she formed surprising bonds with both Saoirse and Turid. They seemed a bit remorseful of Guin's circumstances and did little things to make up for it—Saoirse would share her helpings with Guin at dinner, stuff like that. They also made sure to pay her for her services, although she had little use for the money during her time with them.

She also wasn't kept tied up or forced to do anything (other than treat wounds). Over time she began to relax around them, although her bitterness toward Faolan remained—by then, it was more for his surliness than any of his actions. But Faolan cared about Saoirse and Turid in his own way, and seeing Guinevere get on with them somewhat forced his opinion of her to improve—after all, his only friends seemed to quite like her. It was hard to hate someone your friends actually enjoyed.

Unfortunately his way of apology was handing her a loaded coin purse and telling her to leave if she wished. By this point, Guinevere had begun to consider the trio as a sort of "safety net" from the outside world she feared, which had also been her reason for staying with the hunters. Given the people who kidnapped her actually treated her far better than any of the dragon hunters ever did, she had stopped seeing herself as a prisoner. Guinevere's response had been to shove the purse against his chest and tell him to spend it on a better tent for her the next time they were in town—she was there to stay, unfortunately.

  • they finally are okay with each other at this point? guinevere still thinks he's a huge bitch but she actually would care if he died now
  • vice versa, as well. they both come out of this interaction more accepting of each others' presence

wine tasting

This takes place several months after the second event listed above. By now, Guinevere and Faolan have formed a strong rapport with each other, and seem to trust each other more than anyone else in the group. Guinevere is reliable with her medicine and Faolan is like an anchor—due to Guin's paranoia, she began to stick to him in crowded places, and shockingly, he allowed it.

After a particularly good haul, Saoirse treated everyone to drinks, and while she and Turid made merry, Faolan and Guinevere hung off to the side. The original plan was to sit and sulk until it was time for bed, but they ended up buying a few drinks anyway, and soon they shared the same energy as everyone around him—and a very-drunk Guinevere was pouring sweet mead down Faolan's throat like it was some kind of game.

It was very unlike either of them to do something like that, especially with each other, so the fact that they were enjoying themselves like a couple of rowdy drunkards left a strange feeling afterward. Neither of them had ever had that much fun with another person—especially in a setting resembling a party. That night changed the nature of their relationship, and made them truly realize how close they'd grown.

  • they're getting romantical
  • it hits them like a truck and guinevere doesn't really know how to process it at first
A treasure hunter and a leader of a band of misfits Guin unfortunately fell for.
