Mainline story: Kai was once, what appeared to be, a normal mortal. They had reached their mid thirties and suddenly became very ill. Most of their time had been consumed with doctors and scheduled appointments to find out and treat their issue. Unfortunately, after all was said and done, they could do nothing to stop the medical issue from doing what it had been to them for years unbeknownst to them. They were dying. They had no way to survive and likely wouldn't be able to live longer than a year at most. Time passed and they seemed to be growing weaker and more ill. 

One night, like any other from their childhood, they looked up at the stars and made a wish. Later that week they awoke in the middle of the night to find a strange man with purple hair standing in their room. After some back and forth about how he had even entered their home and what he was doing there (and a few thrown objects deftly dodged by the man) Kai eventually found out that this man was not a normal person and was in fact a "God of Space and Time" and that he, somehow, was also their father. With a long explination finished the man, known as River by Kai's late mother, gave Kai two choices... Join him among the stars and live as they were meant to, or perish from their mortal bound illnesses. Kai took some time to decide, but eventually decided to join their father. 

Now they travel the cosmos speaking to the physical manafestations of planets and travel by the stars to new and strange places Kai could only have ever dreamt of seeing.

Alt story (Saiyuki-verse): Kai was once a heretical beast created by Li Touten within the heavens. It was one of the few created beasts, other than War Prince Nataku, who Li Touten considered to be somewhat salvagable. At the time it was given no name, only a number. In this case "08" was burned into it's shoulder. It managed to take human form once, which led to Li Touten keeping it caged and away from the labs for some time. However, after being tortured and tested over and over it changed back to it's large monster form and would only growl or attack in response to anyone visiting it. At some point a God who had been previously visiting it decided to release it during a large-scale fight caused by Goku and his friends as they tried to help him escape, which became known as The Rebellion. Once released "08" went on a near mindless hunting spree. Being caged and unfed for 500 years had taken it's toll and caused extreme hunger and violence. It's first victim, however, was Kenren, whom had the misfortune of being caught and wounded in the wrong place at the wrong time. "08" had killed and eaten him, but not before crying infront of him, drawing pity from Kenren. Shortly after "08" went on a killing spree and devoured 86 lesser gods before it was eventually killed. Or so it had seemed. Through some twist of fate, however, it healed itself and rose once more. This time it had been captured and tortured. There had not been a way to kill it from what they had found. Nothing seemed to keep it down. Finally, the Merciful Goddess had spoken up with an idea. She wanted to trap it's soul in the body of a mortal, wiping it's memories clean so it would not return to heaven and come back with a vengance. Eventually they relented, given they had found no weaknesses, and did as she had specified. The human baby became known as Kai and was a free-spirited child with a love for all things strange and occult. Spiritually aware, curious and kind were what they were known best for. Eventually, once they became an adult, they moved to a small town with a monk temple nearby and began to attract the attention of a high-level monk priest by the name of Koumyou.
