Profile

Personality

Self-Determined || Loyal || Honest || Frugal || Taciturn || Skeptical || Blunt || Short-tempered

  • Relatively simple-minded, he doesn't plan ahead any further than what's necessary for his immediate well-being and survival.
  • Moreover, complex planning is not his forte.
  • However, he would not have anybody else take control of his life if he doesn't feel like they have good intentions in mind.
  • It's hard to earn his trust and he seldom gives any indication about his thoughts on others, but he's unshakably loyal towards those who've proven their worth.
  • When (directly or indirectly) prompted to, he will give his opinions - very bluntly so. One could say that he lacks a bit of tact.
  • His quiet nature conceals his short fuse, though it does become apparent whenever something goes over his head.
Past

Ay'sen doesn't recall much from his early childhood, though he does know that he was born on a planet with vast oceans full of life. Some time before his birth, space-fairing species have discovered the wild planet and it wasn't long before exploitation began. The Ghyll were classified as 'intelligent animals' due to their simplistic lifestyle, which allowed certain groups to make them into exotic pets or subjects of research. Ay'sen happened to end up as one of the latter, abducted along with his mother and several other individuals to a research station off-planet. Because he was still dependent on her for his survival, he was allowed to spend the next few years at his mother's side. It certainly made the alienating experiences more bearable, but the harder it was on him when she was eventually sent off to a different research center. However, the young Ghyll wasn't given much time to grief when a group of radical activists attacked the research station to end unethical experimentations on living beings.

During the assault, the activists stumbled upon Ay'sen - shocked and puzzled that the researchers kept a living person like a lab rat. They quickly realized that they couldn't leave someone on his own, who had no knowledge of the outside world and barely any social skills. Thus, he was taken in by the group. It was a long and stony road, turning the incredibly shy and asocial youth into a functioning adult, but the efforts paid off. With a knack for chemistry and his 'natural arsenal' of potent toxins, Ay'sen became a valuable member to the activists. While the Ghyll never understood the full extend of their cause, he was content to be useful to the ones who've rescued him.

Of course, their enemies were always hot on their trail and anticipated to moment they'd make a mistake. When that moment arrived, all but one of the group was captured. Ay'sen was able to escape through the leader's sacrifice, something that surprised him immensely. Even though the group's goal had been beyond his comprehension, he understood how important it had been to the others. So why would they choose to save him, instead of someone else? Knowing that he couldn't simply move on with his life, the Ghyll set out to free his companions. His self-assigned mission took him across the galaxy, and he supported himself by offering his services to whoever was in need of them. Soon coming to the realization that he wouldn't get far on his own, he eventually joined a gang of mercenaries, hoping it would advance his search.

Skills
Stealth While he isn't particularly strong or fast, he profits from his smaller frame and his ability to blend in with crowds. Understandably, he prefers long-range and hidden weapons.
Semi-Aquatic A fairly good swimmer and equipped with edaquate breathing organs, he could stay underwater for an indefinite time.
Morse Code From his mother, he learned the morse code-like language of his species. He can resort to it if no other form of communication is available/possible.
Toxic Cerata & Immunity Infused with all kinds of toxins to test the capacities of his immunity during his days as a research subject, he possesses a corresponding arsenal of said toxins. However, he can 'run out' of them, while immunity will stay intact his whole life.
Chemical Warfare Trained in concocting various chemical weapons, meant to take out a great number of targets or individuals.
Trivia
  • He needs to soak in water at least every two days or his skin will become irritated and dry up. It's his favorite excuse for taking long baths.
  • As one would expect, he does not do well in dry climates without special clothing and equipment.
  • His favorite food is a certain kind of poisonous squid-like creature, though he would eat about anything.
  • He doesn't trust scientists and in the broader sense, doctors. However, he would let one tend to him (albeit unwillingly) if it was absolutely necessary.
Species Info
Ghyll are a semi-aquatic, humanoid species. The whole species is inherently intersex, though individuals may choose a gender identity for themselves. Neither excelling in strength nor speed, their means of defense are toxins that are stored in their retractable cerata (and throughout their bodies in smaller quantities), that can be discarded and regrown as needed.
The Toxins are not produced naturally, but derived from various poisonous plants and animals that they consume. At the same time, they build up immunity towards the consumed poisons. Ghyll also possess bioluminescent cells within their cerata and are able to control their activity, mainly using them for communication underwater.
Ghyll are simple-minded creatures. Although they're capable of speech and rational thought, they seldom establish advanced societies and settlements. The majority prefer to live a nomadic life, taking whatever the abundant oceans of their home planet give them. Even as foreign species have begun to invade their planet and exposed them to new possibilities, many have kept the mentality that's so typical for their kind.
