"Just because something isn’t a lie
doesn’t mean it isn’t deceptive"

About

Marshstream is a calm, calculating tom that puts great effort into making the "optimal" choice at all times.
He values patience and intelligence, reacting annoyed at cats he deems rash or lazy. He has a strong need for control, his mind always working and getting antsy when he feels like he's missing something. This is one of the rare occasions he wears his emotions on his pelt, since he usually does his best to keep himself difficult to read, as a means to keep himself and his clan safe.

Appearance

Marshstream is a slender, shorthaired, greenish brown tabby tom with dark marbled striping, a black nose and lighter fur on his chin and belly. Except for his head and the lower parts of his legs, the twisted, vine-like pattern on his body is occasionally lined with patches of brown, which makes his pelt resemble a murky body of water, earning him his name. He has relatively long limbs, thus reaching a little above average height and despite his slender body carrying less mass than many other toms, dense muscles lurk under his sleek coat.
He has two claw marks running across the underside of his right front leg just below his elbow, a scarred left ear and a small nick above his throat. His yellow eyes carry a light tinge of green.

Trivia

  • The scars on his front leg stem from the struggles of a pinned-down former deputy from another clan, his split ear was caused by a member of a small group of rogues that threatened MossClan's southern border in the past and the nick above his throat were curtesy of a snake that wasn't very happy about becoming someone's dinner.

Kittenhood

Marshstream was born the only tom in a litter of three. Due to a parasite ravaging through the forest, destroying the vegetation and contaminating or scaring off animals, herbs and food was scarce and cats of both classes were struggling. As a result of this ressource shortage affecting their mother, both Marshstream and his sisters were born rather weak. It took moons for the situation to become stable, but unfortunately just as things began to look up, his lastborn sister, Deerkit, seemed to fall ill. She grew tired, her limbs too weak to support her weight, only drawing shallow breaths between short periods of sleep.
The cause of this desease could have been many things, but with the chaos of the situation the correct treatment was undeterminable. However, since the litter happened to not only be part of the upper class, but also born to the current leader’s sister, leaving her to die was not an option. As such, many ressources like herbs and food, but also time and helping bodies went into trying to cure Deerkit, ressources that had just recently been treasures to all of MossClan. Marshkit was of course just as adamant about his sister’s life as the cats around him - after all, they would know best, being much older and wiser than him or anyone else!

Eventually all of their combined effort paid off and to the delight of the whole upper class, Deerkit recovered. And with little time to spare, as the siblings’ apprentice ceremonie was coming closer. Naturally, it would have been a shame for a member of the royal family to reach this important milestone late!

Apprenticeship

Due to the recent crisis, their litter actually made up almost all of MossClan’s apprentices with the exception of a single tom-cat nearing the end of his training. Despite this, they rarely interacted with him as he was born into the lower class. Marshpaw paid little mind to this until one morning, a lone warrior rushed into camp with terrible news:
The tom and his mentor, who had left by themselves at dusk for a training session about navigating and hunting in the dark, had been found not a long way from camp, both deceased. According to the medicine cat at the time, their wounds suggested the pair had been surprised by a owl while concentrating on their hunting. The older cat seemed to initially have fought off the large bird and tried to carry his apprentice back to camp so he could receive medical attention, though evidently his attempt was unsuccessful and the exhaustion combined with his own injuries led to neither of them making it back in time.
Despite the tragedy of the situation, Marshpaw was kept busy with thoughts of what happened. It was quite a risk to hunt at night for any group of cats with their territory being so cluttered, with trees and shrubbery making it neigh impossible to notice approaching danger until it was too late. But to wander into a place with that many thick, high trees, at night and during Newleaf of all seasons, without another warrior for protection?

But his questions wouldn’t remain unanswered forever. Though he surely wished it were under different circumstances, as an attack near the river shared with StormClan lead to Deerpaw fleeing towards the nearby cliff. But as she tried to climb up and hide in one of the caves, the dry terrain broke away and left the she-cat to sustain a lethal injury due to landing hard on the sharp rocks below.
It was just after the family had finished grieving next to her body that Marshpaw noticed a nearby she-cat mumbling bitter words under her breath, causing him to confront her in his anger - though he wasn’t ready for the reaction he received.
As it turned out, the patrol checking the border had been too small, despite many cats in MossClan being aware of the current tension between them and the riled up StormClan cats, who were suffering from the harsh Greenleaf sun much more severely than the rest of the clans. The plague during his childhood had gone much deeper than he remembered, with many cats ending up sick, going hungry or even dying as a result of their forest’s fragile state. So much so that, even as the worst seemed to be over and Deerkit was being treated, a litter of four was struggling just a short way from his own nursery. But since these kits were lower class, the leader’s family was made a priority and while Marshpaw’s sister survived, none of the other four made it.
Because of how the situation was handled, MossClan ended up with too few cats to send out and sustain the clan, since the primary victims had of course been part of the lower class, who were expected to risk being exposed to carriers of the parasite much more often than their clanmates. The she-cat exclaimed that their shortsightedness and arrogance had thus not only cost the lives of the “expendables”, but also cats like Deerpaw - and her own son, who turned out to be the apprentice who died on a night hunt with his mentor, since no warrior was able to accompany them.

Marshpaw was greatly impacted by what he learned and later confirmed to be the truth and the already quiet and thoughtful tom became focused on always making the “correct” decision, weighing all possible consequences of each option against each other. His drive and hunger for information and control brought him further into the scope of the talons, who had already been keeping an eye on him because of his skills in stealth and patient evaluation. One of them ended up taking a special interest in him, a strict, no-nonsense type tom named Branchfang, who had just recently come to lead the talons after making a name for himself as one of the most dedicated and respected cats MossClan had ever seen.

Life as a Warrior

As the leaves changed color time and time again, Marshstream spent his life as a warrior less on the open battlefield and more in the background, establishing connections with other cats, crawling through the shadows or carrying out classified missions, all the while spinning his web of information throughout MossClan and beyond. Eventually the passing of Branchfang would lead to him being appointed his successor as head of the talons, a position he has since been carrying out with a lot of caution and foresight.

His personal closeness to Lazulistar had lead to him becoming Rootpaw's mentor before the latter inherited his father’s position just days after the ceremony. As it is, Marshstream remains one of the few cats to honestly care for the young tom, even though his feelings mostly stem from his relationship with the late leader.

Branchfang † former superior and medicine cat

Marshstream held great respect for the Talons' previous leader.
It was Branchfang who displayed the highest interest in him when he was young, as well as training him in the ways of a talon. He was a powerful and honorable cat, respected even beyond the borders of MossClan for his many achievements and neverending service. Marshstream didn't agree with his older clanmate in many aspects, especially his more harsh and dismissive tendencies, but that didn't keep him from mourning the old tom when he finally passed from old age. Marshstream feels a lot of pressure as his successor, often comparing himself to Branchfang, but he ultimately knows they differ from each other in many ways and all he can do is live his life the way he deems best.

uncle and former leader Acornstar †

Marshstream had a good relationship with his uncle, especially in his youth.
The late leader cared greatly for his sister and her kits, and thus paid frequent visits to the small family huddled together in the nursery - every more so with their condition impacted by the resource crisis.
After Marshstream found out about the consequences of of the situation was handled however, his relationship with Acornstar changed to be more distant. He couldn't help but think that Acornstar should have been more farsighted - perhaps then his sister would still be alive. He still cared for his uncle though, and when Acornstar eventually passed, he mourned the older tom like any other MossClan-cat.

Birchcleft † former mentor

12521749_wI6BhKOU8xqBODq.png?1551785411

Marshstream had a decent relationship with his mentor.
Though Birchcleft was always a little too quick to judge for the younger tom, one could not deny that his training was otherwise of high quality - which was, of course, why Acornstar had picked him to mentor his nephew.
After Marshstream became more involved in his training for becoming a talon, the pair spent significantly less time together and once Marshstream had received his full name there was little remaining reason for them to stay in close contact, so their relationship mellowed out as they often did between apprentice and mentor.
Birchcleft adready hadn't been that young anymore when he mentored Marshstream, which is why he passed many seasons ago from breathing complications caused by the deformity in his muzzle finally catching up to him in his age.

leader and former apprentice Rootstar

Out of any cat in the clan Marshstream might be the one with the most genuine feelings of concern for the young leader.
When the bossy tom-cat's father died suddenly about half a moon ago, Marshstream was saddened by the passing of his friend and distant relative, who had respected him enough to appoint him as his only son's mentor to ensure a great education under someone he trusted. The pair only stayed mentor and apprentice for three though, before Rootpaw had to take on his father's role and become Rootstar, thus ending his official apprentice training very early.
He still has a lot to learn though and Marshstream feels annoyingly responsible for the loudmouthed tom, which is why he has taken it apon himself to act as a sort of right paw to the inexperienced leader, having accompanied multiple of his predecessors throughout their journey as the head of MossClan.

Barkfire fellow council member

12521749_wI6BhKOU8xqBODq.png?1551785411

Marshstream's relationship with Barkfire is...difficult, at best.
It didn't take a genius to notice the younger tom's disdain for his more contained clanmate, since he left out no opportunity to shoot Marshstream an evil glare, flap his tail in his face "accidentally" and just ooze bitterness in general as soon as they come within proximity of oneanother. Barkfire never really went into detail about why he disliked his fellow councillor so much, so Marshstream had little choice but to assume it had something to do with his close relationship with Branchfang - who just so happened to be Barkfire's grandfather, despite not spending noticeably more time with Barkfire than he did with other cats.

medicine cat Frothwisp

Marshstream and the young healer get along fine, though there is a certain tension in their relationship at times due to Frothwisp's tendency to hide his true thoughts behind honeyed words.
Not enjoying the feeling of uncertainty that nags him during their every conversation, Marshstream has a much less trusting bond with his medicine cat than most others, who tend to let the calico's charm melt away their caution and loosen their lips. Despite this though, der elder tom values Frothwisp's healing skills and doesn't let his personal reservations shine through in their interactions past sending the occasional suspicious glance his way when talking in private.
