Liebeskummer

It is considered an omen of death. While the particles constantly emanating from what can be assumed to be its wings have adopted the shape of a fairly innocent heart-shape they – in reality – are a sort of spore that is spread by the creature itself and the forming spade-shaped mushrooms spread a sickness which is difficult to heal. It only appears once in a few centuries, but it always manages to wreak havoc upon the people it affects. The creature does not only have one form and takes up the form of whatever creature slays the previous one carrying the curse of the fungi.
