Mattie was quickly forced to grow up due to her situation at home. She quickly learned to be independent and cope with difficult situations, which were most often related to caring for her two younger brothers. She makes it a habit to help others around her, just as she did at home with her adoptive mother.

Since she barely had a childhood, she does have moments when she acts out - she tends to make snide remarks when she doesn't like something or when someone gets on her nerves. She can also be quite short-tempered and impatient when things don't go her way. Mattie is very loyal to the people she is closer to, in particular she is very protective of her family, biological or adopted.
