Synopsis

Ursula A.K.A. Teddy is a fan character for the Pokémon series. They are a Naranja Academy alumni who resides in the Kanto region following their graduation from the academy and subsequent training under Agatha of the Elite Four, determined to become a member of the prestigious league themself. Teddy serves as a travel companion to Red/Leaf during their adventure to the Sevii Islands, and after parting ways, they travel to other regions to visit specific locations and seek out ghost-type Pokémon.

Personality

Teddy is an introverted young trainer who, although they don't necessarily mind interacting with others, is not hard up for company -- especially when they have their beloved ghost Pokémon to do so. They prefer to follow a leader rather than take charge themself as they can be incredibly indecisive, often second-guessing themself even if they are right. As a kid, they are polite and muted in demeanor, but as they get older they allow themself to be more expressive and true to themself. They are extremely passionate about their interests, and if they get close to others, friends are likely to be subjected to many an infodump. Teddy is also keenly aware of how unsettling their enthusiasm can be for some, and they often enjoy using this to their advantage to scare their opponents and little children (though they never mean any harm when they do this). They prefer to stay in their lane and not cause trouble, but should someone get on their bad side, one can expect to experience bad luck and strange events in their day-to-day lives; chances are that Teddy has casted a hex on them.

Abilities

  • Spellcasting & divination. Teddy is a fan of the occult -- they even carry a Tarot deck with them at all times -- and they are known to research and perform certain rituals in order to lure in specter Pokémon, usually with the help of five to six Litwick. They also cast curses on people they don't like and blessing spells on people they do.
  • Mild mediumship. Due to their training, Teddy is sometimes able to see and hear things that others cannot. Aside for having a deep understanding of ghost-type Pokémon, they occasionally see human spirits and have been possessed on more than one occasion.
  • Pokémon Battle prowess. Although defeated by Lance during their Indigo League challenge, Teddy is an extremely capable trainer in their own right. Even before developing their own team in Kanto, they have always displayed a great understanding of battles, and having a team of mons to call their own has only deepened this understanding further.

History

Born and raised in Zapapico, Paldea, Teddy is the product of a Pokémon Center nurse and former electrician's marriage. They are enrolled in Naranja Academy at age 11 where they excel highly in their studies but dwindle in social interaction, avoiding their peers completely when they can. During their first 'Treasure Hunt,' they leave academy grounds only to challenge the Paldea League's gyms, and they easily defeat all eight with rental teams crafted specifically toward each gym's weaknesses before midterms arrive (during their first year, they only have a Gimmighoul and Morgrem). Despite this success, Teddy fails to pass the interview portion of the Champion Assessment each time they attempt it and are never permitted to issue a challenge to Paldea's Elite Four, leading them to a period of depression that lasts through the rest of their freshman year. At the advisory of their family and favorite staff member -- Raifort, who is a teacher's assistant at this time -- they enroll in an exchange program to travel in the Kanto region for their sophomore year as a fresh start. In Kanto, they form their own team of Pokémon and once again defeat all eight gyms to challenge the Indigo League, this time facing defeat at the final Elite Four member. Teddy is disappointed by the loss but invigorated by their newfound love for Ghost Pokémon, and Agatha, catching on to this love and perhaps taking a liking to Teddy themself, agrees to host the kid so they can stay in Kanto while completing their studies abroad under the condition that Teddy trains as a ghost-type specialist.

After graduating from Naranja Academy and holding a virtual celebration due to being overseas, Teddy begins to visit key locations in other regions (such as the Sprout and Burned Towers in Johto) to study and catch different kinds of ghost-type Pokémon, as instructed by their mentor. One such location ends up being the Sevii Islands where they meet Red/Leaf during their excursion and befriends them, temporarily travelling together and even helping them oust Team Rocket from the isles. They develop feelings for Red/Leaf over their time spent together but ultimately stay quiet about it, opting to wait until they're older and a bit more mature to handle such a complex topic, and the two part ways with the promise of seeing each other again one day. From there, Teddy continues to visit different regions and train under Agatha's watchful eye, growing the power of their team, their knowledge and skill on battling, and their earnest love for ghost Pokémon. After Agatha passes away, Teddy makes Lavender Town their permanent residence, and whenever they come home from a trip, one of the first things they always do is visit their beloved mentor in the resting grounds.

Trivia
  • Teddy's name is originally taken from a SoulSilver challenge run where I use only pink Pokémon; I wanted a cute name for my trainer's equally cute team. Reusing the name in my Scarlet playthrough, I came up with their full name Ursula after beginning development on their character. Their placeholder name before Ursula was Theodora.
  • Teddy is autistic, although they do not know this until they are an adult. Unmasking helps them to better regulate and understand their emotions, and the intensity of their enthusiasm is much less (unintentionally) unsettling when they start stimming more frequently.
  • Teddy's starter and ace Pokémon is their Gholdengo, caught as a roaming Gimmighoul on Naranja schoolgrounds; however, their partner Pokémon is their Sableye, Sable, caught on Mt. Pyre in the Hoenn region. Sable is mute, and the Soothe Bell helps keep track of her.
  • Although Teddy is both a ghost-type fanatic and a fan of horror-genre media, they are actually scared quite easily. Like Noelle Holiday, they find a strange sense of comfort in scary movies and stories.
  • Teddy's sense of humor is elastic, and anything ranging from subtext storytelling to Gen-Z memes can make them laugh. When they laugh especially hard, they tend to wheeze like a tea-kettle.

Agathamentor
Agatha was Teddy's toughest teacher and biggest advocate. The Elite Four member often put them pupil through high amounts of stress and sometimes found amusement in their reactions to things, but Agatha cared for Teddy like a grandchild and respected them deeply for their skill and dedication. Teddy similarly looked up to Agatha as a motherly figure, and there was no one else Teddy respected more than their frighteningly powerful, mischievously wicked, dear old mentor.

Redlove interest
Having met in the Sevii Islands, Red and Teddy are longtime friends that begin dating in their adulthood. They are a quiet but devoted couple who bond best over what they love most: Pokémon! In lieu of traditional dates, they go on Pokémon hunts -- usually for ghost-type Pokémon -- and explore hidden or abandoned locations together. Although they may speak less than other couples, they understand each other incredibly well, and Teddy wholeheartedly views Red as their greatest treasure.

Bluemutuals through Red
Teddy's first brush-in with Blue takes place in the Sevii Islands while travelling with Red. First impressions are key, and theirs of Blue happens to go rather sour; however, they slowly warm up to him after the Sevii exploration and eventually come to see him as a real friend. They tend to bicker with each other on minor details, Blue disliking Teddy's indecisiveness and Teddy being skeptical of Blue's absolute confidence, but despite that both parties hold respect for the other and enjoy each other's company.

Lyrabest friend
After meeting her in Hearthome City of Sinnoh, Lyra is Teddy's closest confidant outside of Red. Teddy feels completely comfortable telling Lyra anything and everything that might be on their mind, a rare feat to accomplish with the Hex Maniac, and Lyra is also Teddy's first pick on any social outings she may or may not want to attend. Both are huge goofballs when together, and one can expect many wheezy laughing fits from them when they're around.

Raifortformer mentor; pen pal
Raifort is one of the few staff members at Naranja Academy that Teddy clicks with during their school years. They meet while Raifort is a teacher's assistant still earning her degree, and thus their friendship is allowed an extra bit of candidness that a normal teacher-student relationship would not allow. Raifort encourages Teddy to take part in the Kanto-Paldea exchange program, and they stay in touch even many years later, writing letters as their method of correspondence.
