School

Itari is a member of Hydrasal, the fusion dorm of Octavinelle and Ignihyde. Their sigil depicts three tentacles emerging from a shell with a fiery lotus on top. Itari has no interest holding a leadership position in the dorm and is content being a regular student. By staying out of the spotlight, he has more time to devote to his personal goals.

Job

When not at school, Itari works part-time at a local internet café. On the surface he's a simple server, but he makes good money selling illegal programs under the table.

Merform

As a half mer-human, Itari has an unusual merform. He retains both his legs and has no tail, but still has an altered skin tone, fins, and scales. Without a tail, he's a slow swimmer so he prefers to spend his time on land as a human.

He is based on the collared eel (Kaupichthys nuchalis) which are solitary creatures. They exhibit biofluorescence and glow orange under ultraviolet light. They are false moray eels.

Curse

Itari carries a curse that requires him to return to the sea every three days, or else he will dissolve into seafoam. His hair is a manifestation of this curse.

Signature Spell

Itari's spell is "Abyssal Intuition". It temporarily gives him a heightened instinct that enables Itari to sense the exact method or combination required to bypass complex locks and security systems. However, there's a 50% chance that the spell will fail, giving him an incorrect or partial code.

Incantation: "No depth can hide your key from me, you were destined to lose from the start. Abyssal Intuition."

Trivia

• "Itari" is derived from the Greek word for pearl, "margaritári".
• Boil represents the combo of water and fire. Leeches can also be used to treat boils.
• "Hydrasal" is the combination of the words "Hydra" and "demersal". The Hydra is an ancient Greek sea monster with tentacles and demersal means "living close to the floor of the sea or a lake" which reminded me of how the Underworld is typically thought to be beneath the Earth.
• His merform (collared eel) was selected based on the animal's "glow" similar to the firefly squid (which is Idia's nickname) and it being an eel like Jade.
• He doesn't usually speak unless spoken to, which is why he seems shy.
• Sometimes he will hide contraband programming or hacked information from major companies in geocaches.
• His hair can fluctuate with his mood's like Idia's does. It bubbles with heat when he's embarrassed, gets frosty when he's angry, and freezes when he's scared.

Story

Fusion

Itari is a fusion between Idia and Jade made for fun, so he has very little backstory. He grew up in the ocean surrounding the Island of Woe and spent equal amounts of time within the city as a human and in the ocean as a merman. Despite his curse, he ultimately decided to remain human due to the unwieldy nature of his merform.

Traits

The way traits are inherited depends on the "parent" traits. Shared traits get boosted, so Itari has exceptionally strong fraternal ties since both Idia and Jade care for their brothers.

Normally, shared traits gets cancelled out, but almost all of Idia and Jade's traits opposed one another so I sometimes made Itari share both traits. For example, Itari is both an outdoorsman and savy with computers even though Idia hates going outside and Jade isn't known for his technological skills. Itari gets the best of both worlds!

Any other traits that can get mixed do get mixed. So Itari can use his left and right hand and his birthday and height are between Jade and Idia's. I do this instead of just picking one trait from a single "parent" to make the fusion greater than the sum of its parts.
