Rachel was born into a normal family in the suburbs, to loving parents and a comfortable life. As she grew older, she always felt like there was something different about her, and didn't get along well with kids her age. She felt out of touch, but her parents amounted it to natural shyness, and encouraged her to break out of her shell. When she was sixteen, however, she underweight a terrifying and strange transformation--she began to absorb all heat sources in her surrounding area, including that of her own body. This left her skin cold and blue, but the color of her hair and eyes changed as well, and she developed strange markings along her left side.
By absorbing all heat from her surrounding area, she effectively killed every person in her cul de sac, including her parents. But it was not this abrupt ice age that garnered her the attention of the media and authorities--but the devastating explosion that followed. The blast that emanaged from her teenage body wiped out the entire block, annihilating the area and everyone in it. Within the hour, her face and name were all over the news, and authorities were trying to determine how to get close enough to her to wipe her out.
Fortunately, this surge of power also alerted the attention of the local Vanguard team, who responded to the scene and managed to get through to the frightened girl before she was killed by police. She was taken into Vanguard custody, analyzed and studied, but her anatomical make-up was unlike anything they'd seen before--she was not human. For her own safety, Rachel's name was legally changed to Moxie and she was sent to the Vanguard Institute to help control her powers, and live the semblance of a normal life with this new identity. When she turned eighteen, Moxie was recruited to a Vanguard team of her own, hoping to repent for the lives she claimed.
PERSONALITY| |
Moxie is insecure, modest, and shy. While she has learned to control her abilities (with the aid of a modified regulation suit), she does not view herself as a hero and strives to prove her worth not only to the world, but to herself as well. She is genuinely kind and empathetic, with an immense will to help those in need. Despite her uncertainty, Moxie is an incredibly strong and courageous young woman, who can overcome obstacles, and push through that veil of doubts to achieve what needs to be done.

- Her birthname is Rachel Rowe; but it has been legally changed to Moxie.
- Her skin is always cold to the touch (approx. 40°F), and she wears her specially designed uniform at all times (even under civvies) to help regulate her temperature and prevent her from accidentally killing herself by freezing her insides.
- She is (secretly) a member of the brutal Kuhl alien species, and is one of several 'sleeper weapon' embryos artificially inseminated into human hosts for an imminent invasion. For whatever reason, her 'coding' malfunctioned and she was activated early, at age sixteen.
- Despite her young age and inexperience, she is considered an A-rank extrahuman, the second highest tier of superpowered beings on the planet.
Moxie possesses extensive temperature regulation abilities:
- Moxie's body is constantly absorbing heat from her surroundings; an involuntary behavior that she has yet to learn to control. For this reason, there is a near-constant chill in the air around her, and her skin is left a deathly blue color due to the absence of heat in her own body. However, her appearances are deceiving. In fact, she is capable of high-levels of heat output, with the intensity of a burst of flames. She can regulate the temperature in her surroundings, to freeze objects, melt objects, or even shift them to a particular temperature. For this reason, her abilities range between that of heat and fire manipulation, and also cold and ice manipulation.
- By permeating a barrier of heat around her body, Moxie is able to fly in temporary bursts. She can hover or glide continuously, however she does not have the level of control required for extended flight.
- The suit that Moxie wears is more than just a costume. The sophisticated mesh particles in the fabric and cybernetic components work with her powers to help her regulate her own temperature. This prevents her from inadvertently freezing herself to death, but also from chilling her environment to the point of harming others. Even when wearing civilian attire, she is most likely also wearing this suit underneath.
- Despite her human parents and relatively human appearance, Moxie's physiological make-up is different than most. Her internal organs are arranged differently than a human's, even seeming to shift out of harm's way in the event of a physical wound, her blood clots almost immediately to prevent bleeding out, and her left side is covered in strange black markings that appeared when her powers first developed.
