Profile

Nobody knows Banjo's real name. A real cat out of water (er, desert?) Born in Africa, Banjo was kidnapped as a cub and brought to the US, where he was sold to a circus. He found himself trapped in a foreign land and culture, surrounded by strange noises, smells, and animals. After several torturous years of touring the eastern cities as a circus animal, he managed to escape, heading west to avoid his captors. Out west he found himself free, but alone and starving in a harsh and hostile environment.

When he finally arrived in Cactus Junction, the people and animals that lived there didn't know what to make of him. They'd never seen a serval before. He was an outcast, forced to live on the fringes of society. However he never gave up, learning the new language and culture that surrounded him. He took on odd jobs that nobody else would, from scrubbing floors to clearing streets of manure to everything in between. He lived in the alleyways between buildings. He ate by hunting the rats that rummaged through old whiskey barrels.

These days he's become a regular staple of the town, and has earned the respect of both people and animals. Townsfolk admire his hard work and dedication, as well as his hunting abilities. The hunting skills he learned as a cub he teaches to the local cats, and the town has never been more free of vermin. Likewise he has become a hero to his fellow felines, especially because he's big enough to chase off most of the town's dogs.  He may not have a house or residence but he always has a place to sleep. He learned to wear clothes, and acquired his current outfit as a reward for chasing off a pack of coyotes that threatened the town. He even learned how to play the banjo and has become fascinated with the instrument. The townsfolk started calling him "Banjo" due to the common sight of him lolling around in the shade or against a fencepost practicing his skills and playing for hours. Now he mostly wanders about at his own pace, helping the townsfolk with any issue they might have and seeking out new adventures. The townspeople consider him a good luck charm and welcome him when he's there.

Sometimes he still remembers his homeland fondly, but he's become acclimated to his new environment and considers Cactus Junction his home. He's become enamored with the West and Cactus Junction, and wouldn't return even if offered the chance. He considers himself an American. One thing he still has to get used to is whiskey, which he dislikes the taste of but will drink because he considers it a local custom.

Due to both of them being social outcasts, Banjo is close friends with Tiny and stops by the Bar None frequently on his travels. They met when both of them were homeless and formed a strong bond which still lasts after both of them found better fortunes. Banjo taught Tiny many things about hunting, survival, and self-defense, and Tiny taught Banjo about frontier life, culture, and the local environment.
