Summary

🪖  Passionate, loyal, outgoing  🪖

An energetic young private, who feels his best when encouraging others and fighting for his country.

Appearance

Frank is a tall young man, who stands proudly on his two feet. He is very fit, with a limber and toned build. He has a firm, usually puffed chest and broad shoulders. He has peach-coloured skin, wide olive coloured eyes, a tall nose, and thin lips often drawn into a smile. His ears are on the smaller side. He has a very clear Adam's apple. He has a smattering of freckles across his cheeks as well as the rest of his body. His hair is a sandy blond colour, which he keeps in a very clean regulation haircut. His hair is parted on the side and closely shaved by his ears and neck. As to be expected, he is always seen in his standard Canadian Army regulation uniform, wearing a khaki tunic, breeches, puttees, and boots. Also tends to wear his Service Dress cap. When in his civilian clothes, he favours light-coloured suits and waistcoats, nice boots, and a boater hat. He is 6'0".

Personality

Frank is an extremely extroverted young man who enjoys nothing more than chatting and getting to know other people. He's an all-around good guy, who lights up the room with his good sense of humour and cordiality. He's hard to truly anger, but he is very quick to feel empathy. He is selfless and charitable. He's enthusiastic about performing even the smallest task, and likes volunteering his service for any reason. He is very responsible and always takes accountability if he makes mistakes. Likes being a leader and making changes. He likes to cause a bit of mischief from time to time, but never intends his jokes and pranks to be anything more than harmless fun. He is quite openly nationalistic to both Canada and Britain. He can sometimes be close-minded due to his upbringing in the Catholic church.

Story

Frank's story takes place on the Western Front in mid-1916, during the Great War. He is stationed in France, being one of the soldiers in the trenches during the Battle of the Somme.

Frank was born in Saint John, NB, Canada to a middle class family on June 28, 1895. He has one older brother, Frederick (b. 1893). The Goldwins' roots come from England. Both sides of Frank's family emigrated to New Brunswick from Bristol in the early 19th century. His family are strongly Roman Catholic, and Frank grew up quite religious. His family were relatively new to city life, having previously been farmers all through the 1800's. As a result, Frank and his family would often visit relatives who still lived in the country. Frank became acclimatised to both urban and rural environments throughout his childhood.

Frank joined the Cadets when he was twelve, at his father's insistence. Due to this, he's always enjoyed being involved with military business, and feels "right" when following rules and performing duties.

He joined the army as soon as the formation of Canadian troops began to tackle the war across the Atlantic.

He serves in the 26th Batallion (New Brunswick) within the 2nd Canadian Division. The Somme is his first battle.

Relationships

Cyril Henley

Frank considers Cyril to be one of his closest friends within the field. Frank made it his duty to get Cyril "out of his shell", and learn more about him and his life. The two have completely differing attitudes about the war itself, so Frank tries to bond with Cyril through their similar English family backgrounds, love of the countryside, and imaginative stories. The two become especially close after the Battle of Thiepval Ridge.

Walter Bennett Price

Frank does his best to respectfully follow Walter's orders. Since Frank is from a middle-class family, Walter is polite when interacting, and goes easy on him. Frank is aware of how Walter treats Cyril differently than himself, however, so his views on him are rather soured.

Gilbert Stokes

Frank likes Gilbert and enjoys his character. He can be a bit confused by Gilbert's sense of humour and casualness, as he isn't always familiar with it.

Trivia

  • Smokes and drinks only on occasion. Never indulges to excess.
  • He is sent home in 1917, shortly after the Battle of Vimy Ridge, due to suffering from shell shock (or PTSD). He first struggles with shell shock after a shell nearly hits him. Frank is able to hide some of the symptoms at first, doing his best to live up to his usual courage and and spends time in hospital recovering from initial shock and minor injuries before being sent back to the field. The severity of the Battle all becomes too much for him, and Frank ends up being able to do nothing more than hide, keep his eyes shut, shake uncontrollably... incapable to even talk for a while. After being sent home to Canada, Frank is initially unable to write to Cyril with fears that his friend thought he was a coward; scared that Cyril would think he was trying to escape the war. He is eventually able to go about life relatively typically some years after the war, but struggles with loud sounds for the rest of his life. He never goes back to Europe as his bad memories are too strong.
  • His zodiac sign is Cancer, and his lunar zodiac sign is Wood Goat.
  • His faceclaim is (x), and his voiceclaim is (x). (He would have a pretty average deep tone of voice, expressive and jolly sounding. He has an Eastern Canadian accent standard of the time.)
