The Vigilante

5'11 | Old (Appears 30ish) | 162 lbs.

Personality

Gruff - Wise - Arrogant - Cautious

A gruff and reserved individual, The Vigilante (or Vigil, for short) seems fairly intimidating at a glance. In reality, he's Actually pretty wise and caring, more than willing to assist heroes in their journey. However this does take a bit of getting through his thick shell, as due to some events in his past he is very cautious about who he deals with, especially when it comes to bounties. He can be a bit grouchy as well, as he has a habit of looking down on people. He's fairly strict on the concept of justice, as he believes it can be abused in the wrong hands. Despite his appearance, he's fairly wise and grounded, but he can come of as stubborn and resistant depending on the situation. He tends to trust only himself when it comes to the law, in part to make amends for his mistakes in the past as well as thinking he can exact better punishment for criminals than most.

Origin

In the olden days, The Vigilante went under a different name, The Executioner. His job was solely to execute the angels guilty of treachery against God or their fellow kind. At the time, he could not see, as he was solely an arm of Justice: it was meant to be blind, as not to have bias leak into the system. However, one execution proved his downfall, as when the axe hit its mark, it came about that the man was actually innocent. That was when Vigil started to doubt the system, feeling as though he had killed an innocent man. And with that doubt, the blindness slipped away, and he soon fell due to his hesitation to enact punishment on the guilty. Afterwards, he simply roamed the Earth, adopting the name "The Vigilante" to distance himself from his past role.

Abilities

Angel Wings: Vigil's wings once held great power, and shined brightly in the darkness, however their glory days are long since gone. He cannot fly with these, as they are much too thin and lacking in feathers. On top of that, blood soaks and splatters are present throughout, symbolic of the guilt the man burdens with following the death of an innocent man. These are normally hidden from view, but may come out in times of sudden emotion, or when he's using holy energy to fight, be it shooting his gun or summoning his axe.

Revolver: A simple Revolver, And Vigil's go-to weapon for dealing with outlaws, bandits and other dangers. Bullets from this gun are holy in nature, as he literally blessed it with holy power to make sure he never runs out of ammo. Said bullets vanish if the gun is stolen from him.

Executioner's Axe: An Axe Vigil used back in his glory days. Even now, he can still summon it, but he only would in desperate measures. The pristine Blade was used to execute the guilty via severing their head from their body, However Vigil does not trust himself not to abuse the power it gives him in his current state. The axe can instantly kill anyone that Vigil believes to be truly Guilty and deserving of death: But due in part to this lax requirement, Vigil tries to avoid using it at all as he feels it corrupts him into killing senselessly. After all, if you have an Axe designed to execute the guilty...Everyone starts looking Guilty enough to die.

Morality judgement: A power that has manifested sometime after his fall. The wings on his head can open up to peer into the soul of an individual and see on what end of the morality scale they are on. This special sight can for the most part only see in shades of grey, as it focuses only on the people Vigil can see and drowns out the environment. In simplest terms, Purer souls appear closer to white, morally bankrupt souls appear closer to Black. However, there is one other color he can see appear on a person: Red. Red symbolizes simply how much blood you've spilled. It usually appears on Blacker souls, but a pure of heart isn't immune to occasionally spilling blood for the sake of their cause, And Vigil is all too aware of the effects this can have on morality....

Other

-Doesn't often show emotion on his face. Some have joked he has a "resting poker face"
-While he despises criminals like the next guy, he doesn't trust authority figures, either: Many compromise their morals for power, as he puts it.
-Some speculate that he was the former virtue of Humility. He often claims it's his twin brother, and that people often mix the two up due to them being almost completely identical.
-Almost never lends out his pistol or Axe, as he worries about either of these weapons taking innocent lives.
-Very reluctant to kill people: You'd have to be truly evil for him to even consider ending your life.
-Due to the nature of the axe, it will phase through anyone he believes to be innocent. Not that Vigil would ever consider showing it in front of someone innocent, but there might be the occasion where it needs to be used.
