I’m NOT one of you "Spider-People". My name is Zachary Zhang. I accidentally bonded to a symbiote offshoot and together, we became Hazard. The one, and only, Hazard. You probably don’t know the rest. I, uh, ate some people, got sucked into another universe, fought some aliens, met wayyy too many Spiderbros, and now I spend most of my time trying to get away from them all. Sharing my mind and body with a whole new being has actually been pretty good for me. It’s a lot less lonely now in my head, and my world just got a whole lot bigger. I’m Hazard and I am Zach, and I can be two people while still being 200% me.
Profile
We are the SAME."
As a university student at Empire State University who has also managed to score a highly selective internship at Alchemax, Zach works hard to maintain a high GPA and produce excellent research results. Balancing school, work, and nightly prowls has left him stressed and sleep deprived.
Zach is quite reserved, and his squinty RBF dissuades even the most determined extroverts from trying to engage with him. He is not physically or emotionally affectionate, and tends to become grouchy when pushed to socialize.
Having grown up in a strict Asian household, Zach's life so far has been lacking somewhat in freedom and independence. He embraced the power and chaos that Hazard has brought into his life, and all too quickly accepted him as his better half. He grows extremely anxious when Hazard is not bonded to him.
Hazard is ruled by his whims, which lean into both extremes of good and evil. Hazard has a hunger all things life has to offer. Fortunately for him (and unfortunately for their victims), his host is very receptive to his curiosities.
Hazard has little regard for the nicecities of "manners" or "tact", and tends to say or do whatever he wants. His talkative, energetic nature is quite the contrast to sullen and quiet Zach.
Hazard is very young and excitable symbiote, and he usually allows Zach to take the lead in their bond to give them direction for their motivations. Though this initially sounds like a good thing, Zach's darker, deviant desires are most often what leads the symbionts into the other side of the law.
When they are combined as "Haz" (Hazard And Zach), they feel a sense of completeness that gives them utter confidence. Haz has no filter, and a relaxed, easygoing demeanor that's up for just about anything.
Haz is fearlessly (and often morbidly) curious. Though he is intelligent enough to calculate risk, the idea of a high risk challenge is utterly tantalizing to him, and he is more than willing to take the risk in exchange for a thrilling rush, which makes him seem impulsive and unpredictable.
Haz's main concern is always himself. He doesn't really care about what happens to others, unless it affects him as well. It's nearly impossible to appeal to any sense of empathy with him unless he can be convinced that he will gain something of interest to himself.
Hazard is a symbiote, an inorganic symbiotic species created by the primordial deity Knull. Hazard's parent symbiote is Malice, a host-less symbiote held in stasis at Alchemax Tower for research. After being spawned, Hazard escaped containment and bonded to Zachary Zhang, his first and only host.
After Zach successfully merged his DNA into Hazard's codex, the two have become two genetically identical human-symbiote hybrid entities with an unlimited psionic link. Neither entity require a host, but it is still Hazard's preferrence to bond.
Stressed university student Zachary Zhang has always overworked himself to the bone to try to meet his parent's expectations. He's never once considered his own interests and desires, and the same trend holds true all the way up to the night of his 20th. Instead of going out to celebrate, Zach choses to work late at his internship at Alchemax Tower. Never in a million years would he ever have suspected that something... would choose him that night.
Detective Jeongmin Kang of the NYPD is starting to believe that there's something off about the cannibalistic serial killer of NYC. Ever since his primary suspect disappeared without a trace, the distinctive pattern of the serial killer has been... off. But with few in his department willing to back up his suspicions, Jeongmin turns to new local superhero Hazard for help gathering information for the case.
It seems to be working well in the beginning, but suddenly, the case is starting to progress just a little too smoothly. Normally this should be good news, but Jeongmin's intuition just keeps telling him that they're making a terrible mistake. But the only person with any sort of motivation to tamper with the case is... Hazard? Can this 'superhero' really be trusted? Will Jeongmin find out the truth before its too late?
The creation of a collider on Earth-1610 that could create multiversal rifts led to a period of instability and randomly opening rifts. Following his conflict with Jeongmin, Haz was forced to go into a period of inactivity. Unfortunately, the multiverse had greater plans for him. The multiversal rifts seemed to really enjoy opening up and swallowing him, and for some time, Haz found himself constantly being drawn into new and foreign worlds.
After being drawn into a dark universe, Hazard finds himself being hunted down by a fearsome lycanthrope Spider.
In this bright and colorful world with a heavy mythological theme, Zachary finds that he had a parallel in this verse… which just so happened to be the former best friend of this verse’s current Spider-woman, the Araña Azteca. Even more shockingly, the Zach of this world is dead… but his aunt isn’t.
Hazard's adventures in other universes have caught the attention of the Spider Society on Earth-2099. Despite his insistence that he is not a Spider-Man, in lieu of an active Spider-Man on his verse, Hazard is enlisted as an honorary member in the Spider Society.
Fortunately for Hazard, Detective Jeongmin's campaign against him has yet to have any serious consequences for him, and Haz has taken to the streets again. Though he's decided to keep himself out of trouble for now, it seems trouble still has a way of finding him. As luck would have it, there is a Spider in this verse after all... and even worse, it's a Spider-woman.
For some reason, the new Spider-woman seems to have a grudge against Hazard, but fortunately, she's not much of a match for the now experienced symbiote. But the identity of the new annoyance in his life is a concern to Haz, especially when a girl who looks just like Xochitl, the Araña Azteca, transfers into his program.
As an impending canon event approaches, Zach and Quynh try to figure out which role each of them play in the Arachno-Humanoid Poly Multiverse, in the hopes that they can prevent the death of their loved ones.
Late one night, Hazard is attacked by three hunters. Unmasking one of them reveals that none of them are human... they are alien Skrulls, and they're here on earth searching for Hazard's parent symbiote, which used to be bonded to a former Skrull warlord. His daughter, Lakr'r, seeks to restore her defeated father's honor, but to do that she believes she needs the power of the symbiote, and she's willing to burn all of the East Coast to get it. This threat is too big for Zach and Quynh to handle themselves, but they're not alone, either.
If it's war they want, then war they will get...
SHE SURVIVED.
???
After Quynh’s death, Zach struggles to cope with the overwhelming emotions he feels about her death. Frustrated by his inability to cope, Zach chooses to baseline his neurochemistry, taking away his ability to feel strong emotions.
His new, unaffected personality causes some worry among his friends in the Spider Society, but Haz finds their concern irritating. Hazard, desperate for them to feel something again, suggests they try to find some sort of interesting experience, which accidentally inspired Zach to once again seek violent and risky encounters.
With little opposition capable of stopping him, the Nightmare of NYC hunts once more.
The underworld of NYC has been cowed by Hazard's brutal, violent murder spree on high profile criminals, but Hazard's indiscretion has made him more than few powerful enemies. First and foremost of these enemies is mafioso Vito Rossi, whose gang has suffered heavy losses to Hazard, including Vito's own son. In a final bid to bring down the murderous symbiote, Vito reaches out to professional super assassin, Viper.
Will this elite hunter's venom spell out the end to the uncontrollable Hazard? Well, you already read the title of this chapter.
It will.
When Zach revived, much to Hazard’s relief, he was back in his apartment bed, safe and sound. Neither symbiont could believe that they had barely survived the ordeal, but they quickly realized that the danger was not over.
They quickly realized they had to take a leave of absence from school and go into hiding until they could figure out how to mitigate this new threat. Viper knows what Zach’s face looks like, so there's no choice but to disguise themselves...
Unfortunately for Zach, he's somehow been tracked down once again by Viper. On the other hand, having completed his contract, Viper’s no longer interested in trying to kill Hazard. However, he takes all too much pleasure in tormenting the terrified Zach by following him around…
After much campaigning, the newly formed Life Foundation has finally won the bid to house and research the Malice symbiote. Haz knows that whatever they find out about Malice could prove to be dangerous to him as well, so he takes the initiative to infiltrate the Foundation by posing as one of its researchers.
Hazard's new sibling Savage, didn't stay under long. Savage and his host, Mateo Garcia, are rescued by Mateo's comrades, who offer the Life Foundation a new deal. If they can capture Hazard, it will be Hazard that goes under the Life Foundation's knife, allowing Savage to return to his original position as the Life Foundation's champion.
Zach falls into a deep depression after Hazard is taken away from him. Alone and hopeless, Zach is surprised by an unexpected savior who is willing to risk it all to rescue Hazard.
"I never would have expected that it would be you, of all the people in the world, that would make me whole again."
Determined to never again lose Hazard, Zach throws himself into researching a perfect fusion with his other half.
These last few years have been so action packed that somehow both Hazard and Zach have forgotten that symbiotes reproduce asexually... and are compelled to do so.
After all his experiences, Zach has finally sated his desire for edge experiences… but Hazard has not. As the ultimate symbol of trust, Zach allows Viper to bond with Hazard.
There ain't no rest for the wicked, after all...
