Profile

Introduction

Nathan was once the charismatic and extremely energetic host of the acclaimed paranormal investigation show “ParaNathan”. After the passing of his twin brother and co-host Wilbur, Nathan disappeared from the public eye. He’s since become reserved, avoiding ghosts entirely. Rumor has it that on some nights you can find  him out by the graveyard calling out for his brother. Perhaps believing he may still be able to find his soul.

Nathan is a character from the webcomic Tip The Ferrymen!

Personality

Nathan's Spec (a power that people in Tip The Ferrymen have that's directly tied to what makes them who they are as a person) is "Spirit." This allows him to see and speak to ghosts, but aside from the paranormal aspect there are a lot of ways to interpret what this says about him as a person. These days, Nathan's closed off and reclusive, but it's just an act. Deep down, he craves the company of others. He'll swear up and down that he's a lone wolf, but the second someone else is in need he rushes to their side to help them. For instance, when Eddie (someone he doesn't get along with immediately upon meeting them) implies they either have no place to stay or that their current home is unsafe, Nathan is quick to invite them to stay under his roof. In a way, he's talented at "lifting people's spirits", which could be an origin for his Spec.

These "people person" traits are something Nathan tries to push down to try and become more and more reclusive, believing this somehow makes him a better investigator. Truth be told, while Nathan DOESN'T lack intelligence, he's much better suited for interviewing people than he is piecing together physical clues. This leads to him being a bit clumsy in his investigations, often grasping at straws or following the wrong trail entirely. He's constantly ignoring his own strengths in favor of trying to fill a role that was not meant for him. Nathan is extremely stubborn, though, and if anyone tries to point this out he'll vehemently deny it, insisting he knows exactly what he's doing and that he knows best. This is less an attempt to assert his own intelligence and moreso a desperate grasp at asserting his independence, not realizing isolation and independence are not the same thing.

There's always a lingering sense that there's something more to this isolation, though what exactly that "something" is is up for debate.

Background

ParaNathan

"ParaNathan" was an online paranormal investigation show hosted by twin brothers Nathan and Wilbur Vargas. The purpose of the show was to give the dead a voice again, diving into who they were as people and how the hosts can help them move on from the mortal world. It was relatively lighthearted if a bit somber at times, with a lot of the humor deriving from the dynamic between the (at the time) extremely energetic Nathan and his more deadpan brother Wilbur.

The show was well known for actually capturing ghosts on camera, something made possible by Nathan imbuing his Spec into their recording equipment. Between the dynamic of the hosts and the heart and compassion brought to people who are often left forgotten, the show became a phenomenon online.

ParaNathan ended abruptly a few years into it's run following Wilbur's sudden death in a fire at the brothers' offices. Without any announcement, Nathan ended the show and retired from paranormal investigation entirely.

Vargas Investigative Offices Fire

Though Nathan was a paranormal investigator, Wilbur tended to focus on solving cases in the living world. Given how often the two collaborated on their investigations, they opened a shared office space referred to as the Vargas Investigative Offices. This office also included a workshop, a place where the two could build and imbue their Specs into different tech that they'd constructed together.

Five years before the events of "Tip The Ferrymen", the offices suddenly caught fire, resulting in Wilbur's death and Nathan's left leg needing to be amputated below the knee. Nobody is quite sure exactly what happened, but according to Nathan the fire started by accident down in the workshop. Nathan and Wilbur were both still in the building when it collapsed, it's miraculous that Nathan survived.

Following the fire, Nathan took custody of his nephew Joey Vargas (who at the time was about 7 years old) and retired from paranormal investigation.
