Veldrynne is born in House Avinsin, a noble house of mid importance in the drow city Menzoberranzan. In drow cities, females hold positions of power and view males as inferior, and all drow houses compete with each other. Her older sister, Akorwaeth, is being groomed to one day take over their House, and is trained as a priestess. As the next oldest, Veldrynne is expected to follow in her footsteps. However, she doesn’t have any magical inclination or talent; she prefers to practice with physical weapons and spar with her brothers, Dirzhagg and Bhrinraen; both are fighters, with the former acting as an officer of the soldiers that are members of their house, and the latter training as a scout. Such friendship, especially considering their genders, is exceedingly rare, and so her mother, Mallafayye, and older sister disapprove. They send Dirzhagg and a faction of drow off to fight somewhere far away, and bully/abuse Bhrinraen in order to dissuade Veldrynne from spending time with the males. Against their wishes, she continues training with Bhrinraen as well as their orphaned commoner friend Rylyrrar in secret- the three are close in age, and Veldrynne finds them much more relatable than her stuffy older and younger sisters.

As the drow age, they are pulled in different directions. Veldrynne is encouraged to embrace the goddess Lolth’s teachings, and to take up a consort to pass down her bloodline. Dirzhagg has not yet returned. Bhrinraen’s training keeps him busy. Rylyrrar has to stay out of sight of the nobles, who often mistreat drow non-nobles. In desperation, Veldrynne decides to seek out Ry again- if she can convince him to be her consort, then her family won’t think twice about her spending time with him. She begs Bhrin to help her, only for him to reveal what he’s been up to- he’s been part of a scouting group that launches raids on other settlements, and they are beginning to breach the surface. He thinks her sneaky, deliberate battle style will be an asset to their group and invites her along. She joins and finds that Ry is also part of the group, to her excitement. Their raid is successful, and they bring back treasure and wealth to their House. Matron Mallafayye is not pleased with Veldrynne tagging along, but admits that she has potential, and that so long as they continue having successes, and as long as the raids don’t interfere with her priestess duties, she is allowed to continue helping Bhrin and the others.

Veldrynne joins them on many more raids. Ry knows a lot of rogue tricks due to having to fend for himself, so he passes his skills along to her, Veldrynne also becoming a rogue. At some point, she approaches him about masquerading as a consort, but he responds that it would be much more ideal for them to just escape to the surface and live out the rest of their lives together. Veldrynne is still too loyal to her House to consider such a blasphemous thing. But soon after, the group bites off more than they can chew. They head out much farther than normal, only to find that a group of rogue humans led by a female named Hanna Eldart is also launching their own raid on the same village. The two forces clash. Hanna turns out to be a smug and crafty leader, and more of an obstacle than they expected. Bhrin is killed, and Ry is also nearly killed, but Veldrynne leaps forward to defend him and take the hit. Both Ry and Hanna are shocked- neither imagined one drow to sacrifice herself for another. Hanna regains her composure and tells Veldrynne that she will spare her as acknowledgement of her unusually selfless actions, but also decides to take Ry prisoner. Their group leaves with Ry and all the loot. Knowing that if she heads back, she will be forced back into priestess training with no respite, she orders the rest of the crew to tell her family they have all perished, and then sets off to find Ry on her own after burying Bhrin on the surface, under the moonlight.

Veldrynne’s heart grows colder as she travels. Having rejected many aspects of Lolth’s teaching, she has no religion to tether herself to, and thus behaves rather chaotically. She maintains her contempt of the surface races, though a small part of her is impressed by Hanna’s skill and wonders if there is more to them than she’d thought. She mingles with the seedy individuals of the towns she passes through- depending on her mood, some she winds up gaining information from, and others wind up killed. She can never stay in one place for too long, as she soon winds up being branded a criminal. Eventually, she gets caught, and she resigns herself to death. However, someone winds up freeing her, and she finds out it is Hanna. She tells Veldrynne that she rather enjoys the chase and tells Veldrynne that it would be no fun for her to be dead. Veldrynne realizes that Hanna has been one step ahead of her the whole time, and grows enraged. But Hanna slips away again, promising Veldrynne that Ry is still alive...
