Appearance · · ·

Fustian is a 28-year old nonbinary air genasi of above-average height but stocky build. Their skin is darker brown, and their hair is slightly curly and blueish white, darkening to blue at the tips. As is typical of air genasi, they have lightning-blue eyes, hair that perpetually flows as if in the wind, and what appear to be tiny cracks in certain parts of their skin that glow with elemental energy (along their jawline, down their neck, on their shoulders and upper arms, on their inner arms/palms). When not in cleric armor, they tend to wear long flowy silky outfits. They also have a blue headdress (keffiyeh) that they will either wear on their head or wrapped around their neck like a bandana.

Personality · · ·

Fustian puts on a vaneer of laid-backness and informality. They are prone to joke around and make light of most situations they find themself in. Of course, they also enjoy indulging in whatever drugs they have on hand, which tends to relax them even more. Being chaotically-inclined, they follow whatever paths interest them regardless of whether or not they align with the law, though they do have a nurturing side and do not enjoy seeing themself or anyone else get hurt. In fact, Fustian is a bit cowardly when it comes to combat, preferring to avoid putting themself in positions where they may have to fight. Despite this, their devotion to Selûne and earnestness in their worship is one of the few things they take seriously—at night, when they pray, they almost seem to become a different person, more pious and less chaotic.

Fustian has a third side to them as well—a side that is paranoid and anxious about their past. When pressed, they simply say that they were a traveler, though they never speak of the events that led them to their travels. In fact, they are more likely to admit their past drug problems and debauchery than anything else. They seem to have a disdain for royals, but strangely, Fustian has a penchant for fine clothes and jewelery...

Backstory · · ·

Fustian, born with the name Fasih el Laghmani, is a nonbinary air genasi who was born in the city of Schamedar in Calimshan. The city is very religious in nature, with temples and shrines dominating the city. They were adopted from a young age by Sirah and Rohaul el Laghmani, two wealthy Calshites (though this was hidden from them as they grew up; they were always told that they were the mother’s only biological child and that they were a blessing to the family). As Sirah was infertile, she would come to adopt many more, with Fasih being the firstborn and thus most prized. Fasih was not only tasked with carrying on the family name and legacy, but also tasked with taking care of their siblings. Their inclinations towards nurturing in addition to their natural ties with the elements and magic made them an ideal healer. Their house fervently worshiped Siamorphe, goddess of the nobility. Fasih always assumed that their healing power would come from her as well, but they never felt truly connected to the goddess and never felt that they were receiving guidance from her.

Overall, Fasih’s life consisted of bowing to their parents’ whims and wishes without much thought or complaint. They were schooled at home by their mother while their father went out on official business, and were also privately tutored and trained in their magic. Fasih shrugged and accepted that this was just the way things were, though they were never truly happy. When Fasih reached age 15, they faced pressure to marry, and their parents began to seek out suitable partners. At around age 16 they were introduced to Amelin, a beautiful young woman about whom they sensed something strange. They continued to court her, and once they were finally able to go on private walks, Fasih realized that she was also a fellow (earth) genasi. She begged them not to tell anyone, as she was trying to pass as human and didn’t want the risk of being targeted as a genasi. As they grew closer, she disclosed that the Laghmani family had an outside reputation for standoffishness and power hungriness, and that they earned a sizeable portion of their wealth from slave trading. Knowing that Fasih’s family would pressure them to get together to ensure powerful genasi offspring, she didn’t want to be a part of any of it. Fasih was overwhelmed by this revelation but desperate to bond more with a fellow genasi, so they wound up disclosing this to their parents anyway, not wanting to believe the rumors and selfishly hoping they could learn from her if their parents forced them to marry. Of course, marriage arrangements began to be pushed, but Fasih was distraught to learn that Amelin had vanished without a trace. They turned to Sirah next, wanting to know more about their bloodline, only for her to slip and finally reveal that they were not actually related by blood—sensing Fasih’s potential, their family had ripped them away from a slave mother, and many of their other siblings had also been rescued from slavery and separated from slave parents. With the realization that everything Amelin said about the duplicity of their family was true, and with their family’s newly enforced pressure on Fasih to keep these secrets, Fasih decided to leave in the dead of night during a storm to hide their trail.

While out on the streets, they stumbled upon Tyrisse, another air genasi conducting suspicious business under the cover of the storm. Tyrisse was thrilled to meet them, and he revealed that Amelin had been adopted into their crew—an underground group of genasi called The Primals who treated each other as kin and were hidden from the public eye. They had settled by The Genie’s Quarter, an area said to be haunted by spirits of genies that had ruled the city in the past. The Primals had been wanting to recruit Fasih for a long time, but couldn’t get through to them, and Amelin had given them the head’s up that Fasih might be willing to ally with them now. Fasih happily joined and learned more about their race. Unfortunately, they also learned that the group was fully composed of passionate, extremist genasi who believed their rights had been extremely violated by Calimshite society, and so their goal was to dismantle the hierarchical class system. Fasih found that they could not bond very well with the genasi, having come from an upper-class background, and resigned themself to taking care of the younger members of the group instead.

Fasih and Amelin had been placed in separate branches of the group to train and conduct different tasks, but when they finally crossed paths, Fasih alerted her to The Primals’ goals in a panic. Amelin seemed sorrowful about things, but did not feel any desire to get out of their group, as she was better off than she’d been in her last life. Every so often when their duties would put them in the same place, they’d secretly chat about religion—Amelin’s house had worshiped Selûne, the moon goddess, a deity who advocated for self-exploration, love, and dreams. Talk of gods was highly forbidden among the group, as the genasi believed they and their genie ancestors were the truest arbiters of justice. Despite this, Amelin believed that The Primals were following their hearts and instincts with a goal to make the world a better place, so in a sense, they were following the moon goddess’ will.

Though Fasih was coming to respect her religion, they weren’t so sure about Amelin’s interpretation and was afraid that many innocents would get hurt in The Primals’ plan to overthrow the city’s government. In addition, The Primals were beginning to tighten their control over the group as they planned to soon assassinate some of Schamedar’s most high-class nobles and start a class war. They wanted Fasih to infiltrate their family and pull some strings from the inside. Fasih arrived to play their role, but upon seeing their family for the first time in months, they broke down and realized that despite their family’s ills, Fasih wanted no part in their destruction. They confessed everything they knew about The Primals. Their family imprisoned them until they could confirm their ramblings and The Primals, alerted that several phases in their plan were being put into motion earlier than expected, began to launch citywide attacks. During the attacks, Amelin broke into Fasih’s prison, furious about Fasih revealing her involvement in things she had begged them not to twice in a row—Fasih had never seen her so angry, and was certain their life was coming to an end. She might have killed them if not for Tyrisse stopping her, sneering that Fasih was as good as dead anyway, and that they had other, more important nobles to take care of. In the chaos, Fasih left Schamedar entirely, sensing that they would never be welcomed back.

They spent the next 8 years of their life wandering western Faerûn. At this point, they changed their name to Fustian and stopped going by all their titles. They would seek out temples of Selûne, and even began primarily traveling at night, feeling a closer connection to the goddess when they walked in her moonlight. While they became rather spiritual in the evenings, often praying to Selûne or helping people as a healer, they began to descend into debauchery in the daytime, often drinking at taverns and gathering herbs and drugs—some of which they set aside for clerical purposes and others to intake as hallucinogens. Their unpredictability resulted in them getting into trouble in many places where they’d stay, and so they could never remain in one place for long. Fustian piddled away most of their remaining fortune, becoming near-destitute. It didn’t help that they swore to never reveal their noble lineage, afraid that word of their travels would make its way back to Schamedar.

On one late-night expedition they met a harengon named Wendy on the outskirts of a town called Stinger—in a hazy, drugged stupor, they accidentally stumbled into one of her hunting traps. Upon hearing that Fustian was a healer, Wendy seemed to take more interest in them. Fustian learned that her mentor, Ozimak, was sick and aging, and negotiated some refuge in exchange for assisting Wendy in taking care of him. Fustian and Ozimak wound up hitting it off, and the genasi gained respect for the old harengon, who would later plead on his deathbed for Fustian to take care of Wendy. Ozimak passed under the light of a full moon, which Fustian interpreted as a sign from Selûne that \would thus fill them with newfound purpose. Fustian dropped many, but not all, of their drug habits and took up the adventuring life with Wendy for the next few years, strengthening themself physically, mentally and spiritually.
