Pre-Series

At that point unnamed, she was born to Lisa and Dan Mayweather who - currently being hunted down by a dangerous street gang - left her on the doorstep of the Laurens family and escaped. They took her in and named her Clara, and when their biological daughter Cheryl was born they were raised as sisters.

Cheryl showed great musical talent and her parents were determined to make a popstar out of her, and Clara got dragged into this. Clara showed promising abilities, but was less keen on stardom. She followed the path laid out for her anyway, and the sisters grew into celebrity singers and models.

Season 1

Clara became dissatisfied with this lifestyle; constantly surrounded by fans who wouldn't give her the peace she needed, the personal details of her life being shared around like playground gossip. Seeking an escape, she began to talk to a young man named Jeff who had contact with some of the more delinquent townspeople. She hung out with these groups and gangs more and more, often leading to Cheryl asking where she's been.

The relationship between the sisters grew tense as Cheryl often found herself doing meet-ups and signings alone, while Clara wouldn't tell her where she was disappearing to. During this time Clara would kill a violent gangster who had been threating her new friends, and would adopt the name Bernadette Mayweather to separate this violent act from her professional life. Word gets around the streets that this Bernie had killed one of the toughest thugs around, and she commits more minor crimes with her gang and would have sexual relations with Jeff.

Knowing how much it was hurting her sister to be apart from her, Bernie would briefly give up this life and return to the celebrity one that she had frustrated her so much. However, a former accomplice of the man she killed was out to discover the truth about her identity, and had held Jeff hostage to beat the information out of him.

Season 2

Bernie catches wind of this and goes to rescue him. She makes a deal with Jeff's captor and he's eventually released, and her secret is presumably kept safe. While Jeff is in hospital Bernie finds herself asking Cheryl about her birth parents, and Cheryl brings up the Mayweathers - who died a day or two after Clara was found - as a possibility. Silently shocked that Bernie may have named herself after her actual parents, she decides to investigate further.

She visits Jeff and asks him about it, and he says the Mayweathers were killed by the criminal organisation lead by the same man who kidnapped him and who Bernie let live. Bernie swears revenge on him and although Jeff too injured to join in, he tells her to go find his friend Maya who'll gladly help out. Upon Bernie's return home she has a blazing argument with Cheryl over her constant absences, and she leaves to find Maya with no intention of coming back.

Bernie and Maya hit it off and agree to infiltrate the gang's base despite the dangers. They travel there and put up a good fight, but the leader discovers and corners them, capturing Bernie while Maya flees. Bernie feels angered and betrayed by Maya leaving her, and tells the gang leader she no longer cares if her secret is revealed. He leaves her to carry out his plan, though he later returns with the intention of finishing her off.

However, before he can kill her, he is ambushed and defeated by Maya, Jeff, and the rest of their friends. They rescue Bernie and pile her into Maya's caravan, where they make a speedy getaway.

Realising these people care about her despite their criminal reputation, she decides she wants to stay with them full-time instead of returning home.
