Jan has a longing for a quiet, peaceful life. She wanted to live by the book, no extra stops along the way, simple and easy. What she got was quite the opposite - a life full of criminal activity, life threatening situations, and constant surveillance. As you can imagine, this whole thing has shot her anxiety through the roof, and her blood pressure along with it. She’s ill equipped for the job she’s been assigned, and it shows in her constant anxious demeanor. One in her position ought to be good at dealing with exceeding pressure, but she is not one such person.

“Peaceful” is not a word one could use to describe Jan’s childhood. The eldest child amongst six siblings, her family was already struggling to stay afloat even without the added factor of children - imagine how hard it would be to find time to care for six of them! Indeed, it proved to be difficult - so difficult, that once Jan’s parents had popped out a couple more children, they delegated the responsibility of child rearing directly to her. Jan became their personal nanny at the age of eight, taking on the responsibilities of feeding, changing, bathing, cleaning up after, putting to sleep, the siblings that just seemed to keep coming over the years. Jan was amazed that two people could go through all the effort to have so many children while simultaneously barely lifting a finger to care for them.

Jan’s house was never quiet - constantly filled with the sound of the TV, bickering, toys hitting the wall, kids falling off of furniture, said furniture breaking, and most of all, the crying that never seemed to stop - even when she stepped outside to let off steam, the constant sounds of the midnight streets plagued her. It occurred to her that all she truly wanted out of life was some damn peace and quiet. As much as she loved her siblings, she needed out of that house, so she set her mind on doing just that as soon as possible. She started putting as much effort as she could into school, which was hard while still being expected to care for her siblings - but somehow doable.

After getting into a prestigious university in the Sunlight Towers on a scholarship, she studied forensic accounting, in the process finding herself an especially beneficial internship working in the government offices of Arcturus. She finally felt like she was on track to that Bellatrix life she’d been dreaming of since she was thirteen, white picket fences and all. She didn’t notice how her apartment had been bugged, or the special attention her manager seemed to regard her with.

After finishing her degree and graduating, she was offered a permanent government position with her internship, which she graciously accepted - sure, she would have to stay in Arcturus for a few years before she reached Bellatrix, but she viewed it as a stepping stone to bigger and greater things. She barely skimmed over her employment contract, not minding the fine print detailing prison time if she were to terminate her employment, up to and including life.

Jan had just drafted herself into a hidden government spy organization.

As it turns out, Jan will never reach that Bellatrix life she’d been dreaming of, seeing as she’s signed her life away to the Novian government. Instead of living a peaceful, quiet life under cloudy blue skies, she’s underpaid, overworked, and, perhaps worst of all, under a constant barrage of endless noise.
